“Okay, okay,” Jax sniggered, lifting his hand to point to the digital sky again. “That one. Right there. See it?” He glanced over to make sure his companion was looking. “It's a bird. See, those three make the wing. And that one's the head..” He explained, pointing to the relevant stars of the constellation as he spoke. Caine lay beside him on the grass (technically hovering an inch above it), his hands folded on his stomach. He was glancing up at the stars, but his eyes kept returning to Jax.
There were no patterns in the stars. Caine had used complete randomization to place them, and despite reanalyzing the patterns every time Jax pointed one out, he did not see what the man was talking about.
Jax looked over at Caine, finding the man staring at him again. He gave that odd little laugh. “You aren't even looking! Look.” He scooted a little closer to Caine, pressing his head close to his teeth so he could properly line up the pointer of his finger with Caine's eyeline. “Right there. See? The little birdy? It's right above the bear.”
When Jax glanced to see where Caine was looking, the ringmaster's eyes were rotated in his teeth to look at him again.
“Give.” Jax said bluntly, grabbing Caine's hand and lifting it, folding it into a pointer. He guided it to manually point to the relevant stars. “Right. There. See it?” He traced the outline of the bird with Caine's finger.
Caine didn't say anything. When Jax glanced over the eyes were still fixed on his face. Coloring slightly, Jax let go of his hand and lightly caught Caine's jaw in his hands, pinching them shut. “Stop.” He said, unable to do anything about the stupid grin on his face. “You said you'd try stargazing with me. You're not even looking at the stars.”
Caine sat up, opening his jaws to look down at Jax. “I am.” He said quietly.
Face reddening, Jax pushed his jaws closed again and shoved Caine away. “Jerk…”
But he didn't do anything about it when Caine laid back down and turned his head to stare at Jax. Jax just folded his arms behind his head, face pink, and let him.
