Work Text:
Emily’s checking her email as her wife gently holds her free hand, waiting outside the dressing room as Adelaide tries on two different dresses. A hot pink dress covered with sparkles and a dressier red moment. Haley picked them out for their daughter, switching off and giving her options as she vetoed every single one of them. It wasn't as easy as she remembered it being. Adelaide used to love anything she brought home, especially if it was hot pink. Sometimes Haley has to remind herself that she isn't a kid anymore, that their daughter's almost an adult.
“Momma?” Emily and Haley both look up at the same time, although Addie elected Emily as Momma as a child and Haley as Mommy. Still to this day, even at age sixteen, she stays true to those colors.
Prentiss bumps her shoulders as she smirked, taking a step forward, no longer engrossed in her work to pass the time. “Your daughter wants you, Hales.” Emily says, and it’s so similar to what she recited through a sob after Haley gave birth that her cheeks feel hot.
Picking up her wife’s hand again, Haley walked into the dressing room as Adelaide held her hand above, as if to signal where she was. Hearing the footsteps, her daughter looked up. "Mom?”
Haley clears her throat as she knocks on the door. “Yes.”
And then, Emily, right beside Haley, “Hi, Addie.”
“I can’t get the zipper to work, Mom.” The panic in her voice echoed as she unlocked the door, looking to her parents for guidance as they both smiled. “Stupid sparkles. I look fucking ridiculous.”
“Adelaide.” Haley. “You look beautiful, honey.”
“Addie.” Emily, although, she’s too busy laughing to correct her foul language.
Adelaide rolled her eyes as Haley and Emily stepped inside the dressing room, shutting the door as she turned around. Haley gently placed a hand on her back as she fought with the zipper, getting a frown in return. “You have to say that, Mom.”
“No, I don’t.” Haley says, finally getting the zipper to give way as she moved her closer to the mirror, standing behind her as she rested her head on her shoulder. "Look at her, Em."
Emily suppressed a laugh as Adelaide rolled her eyes, so much of their daughter was her. All the good in Adelaide came from Haley. "Our little girl." Emily says, and then to upset Haley some more. "All grown up."
Haley frowns and Adelaide looks behind her to cheer her up. "You like this one, Momma?" Haley was frozen, almost unconscious as she felt Emily's hand find her back.
"Do you?"
Adelaide shook her head, "No. What about you, Mom?" She looks to Emily for guidance — always — as Prentiss looked at their little girl, light blonde hair and beautiful brown eyes, the perfect mix of the two of them.
"It's a choice."
Adelaide laughs. She's already putting her hands on her back as to get it off. Haley kisses her forehead and then looks behind to kiss Emily on the cheek as the teenager gags. "You guys are disgusting."
Holding Haley tight, arms drawn on her hips, Emily says, "Some people would be happy that their parents are still in love, Adds."
She shakes her head as she pushes them out, already wanting to try on another dress. The door closes on Emily's happy expression as Haley laughs. "We're in public, Prentiss." Haley walks down the hall and back out into the aisle, stuck by a bunch of winter coats as she begins to pick through them, holding up one meant for a child. "For Jack?"
Emily nods, "He'd like that." And then, "People should know I love my wife."
Haley's never been big on public displays of affection, if anything, she doesn't know what to do, or how she got so lucky. Emily's behind her suddenly as Adelaide shouts again. "Mom!" Her wife looks over, eyes widened with excitement.
"I believe that's for you, Em."
"You're not coming?"
Haley shakes her head and pulls away, "Jack needed some new shorts. You know where to find me."
Emily stole a kiss before walking back, Haley's already making her way to the little boy's section. "You're such a tease, Brooks."
Haley looks down at her ring anxiously, mumuring across the way. "And to think, I almost took your last name, Emily."
Emily only moves from the doorway when Adelaide yells again, louder that time, causing both of them to blush as they laughed.
