Eyes like Rubies

Summary:

Red never really thought about love before at least not before Sansy. To have someone who could understand you, who could read you had been terrifying but in a way it became comforting not having to say something to be understood not having to be open to be seen. Sansy made life worth living again it wasn’t just about surviving and keeping his bro alive it was . . . Good. So why? Why did Sansy leave what happened to him? Why did he have to lose him?

Work Text:

Red had never really loved anyone before well besides Papyrus but he was talking about romantically. It had never felt safe to do so. He was the judge even if people didn’t know that. He had weak HP, considerable trust issues, and everyone in UnderFell sucked ass. Then love came down from the heavens and right on top of him. It wasn’t funny at the time but looking back Sansy falling like an angel and crushing him was a bit funny. The smile slowly faded before he jerked it back in place. They hadn’t gotten along at first different view points, opinions, and entirely different lives they didn’t see eye to eye about a lot of stuff. Slowly, things changed as they learned more about one another. A connection first of friendship and as time went on something more. Something Red had never allowed himself before he had fallen in love with the doofus. Sans was a lot kinder than anyone he had ever met even when Papyrus was still young. He was also a lot more forgiving even when it ended up backfiring for him he never got mad. It helped to have someone who was there for him who could see past his walls and faults and love him all the same. They well it’s stupid but he had thought about tying the knot getting married picked out a ring and everything. He knew Sans loved him when he put on his collar but he also wanted to do it like people in Sansy world to give him everything he ever wanted. And then. And then Sans was just gone a single sticky note with two words “I’m sorry” heh. What a fucking joke.

“–ver fight Killer alone and don’t provoke him. Usually regardless of Nightmare orders he’ll play around in fights we don’t want him getting serious.” The Bad Sanses stupid fucking name in his opinion had become a bigger and bigger problem even as the “Stars” recruited more people it was still a fight against people with higher stats, LV, and experience. He wouldn’t have even bother coming to this meeting if Lapis hadn’t meddle him into joining it was something to do. He couldn’t really stand to be in his au for long like everything good had been scooped out leaving a hollow mess. “–ats why we should divide based on ou–“ By the Angel he couldn’t wait for this meeting to be over he would just ask Lapis about the plan afterwards they really talked way too much.

Of course Blue had taken control of the meeting everyone knew that Ink was a loose screw. Right now he was hanging upside down scribbling completely unaware of whatever Blue was talking about not like he could blame him without being a hypocrite these meetings were hella boring. Dream while a self proclaimed God was not use to leadership or battle. Lapis he knew had been in the group for a while and still wasn’t taken as serious as Blue opinions were the curse of being a swap sans he suppose people would always look at you and see their own “sweet naive papyrus” they underestimate them way too much even swap Sanses underestimated their brothers guess it was a Sans thing well except for fell au’s then again people seemed to view fell papyrus as sad or some shit that they should have been hyperactive naive sweethearts like it was the only option allowed. Berry was his least favorite of the the three swap Sanses being the literal embodiment of everything people thought about Papyrus but on crack. Smaller then any average Sans, 10x more hyperactive then a Papyrus, switches between being a naive idiot and a manipulative bloodhound. He doesn’t trust that fucker and worse no one seems to think so as if they can’t tell that something was off about him. Then there was . . . Classic as everyone called him. Red didn’t really know if he was actually from the original universe or just one of the regular Undertale universe and honestly he had no plans to find out. He couldn’t stand him the dude was nice enough but everytime he looked at him all he saw was Sansy face but acted nothing like him. It made him uncomfortable not like he did anything wrong but he just can’t stand to be around him.

Finally the Angel damn meeting was over some people were still hanging around talking about one thing or the other but he really can’t stand another second in this room. Someone called his name but he ignored it continuing to stomp out the room maybe go to the local Grillby’s. “HEY, Red Wait Up!” Maybe he would even pick up a some cat treats for the damn cat that mangy little beast Sansy spoiled him rotten and now he always wanted their food or some expensive treats. Heh. “RUBY!” His attention was immediately dragged out of his thoughts at the fucker who dared to call him that no one was allowed to call him that. Ah it was Lapis of course the asshole knew how much he didn’t like being called that not anymore. “I told you not ta fuckin call me that.” The snark was strong with this one apparently Lapis either didn’t care or hadn’t noticed. “Well I Tried Calling You By Red BUT, You Were Completely In Your Own Head!” He made sure to use his hands to emphasize his point even picking him with his finger to really drive it home. If it was anyone else he would have broken that damn finger but this was Lapis so he let it slide the fucker probably knew he would. “I was thinkin” eyelights darting to the side as if having to see Lapis face pained him “besides if it was that damn urgent ya would have told me before the meeting meanin ya could have just texted me instead of all ya hollering.” No matter how much Red tried to brush him off or even divert the conversation back to whatever the hell Lapis wanted his face still creased in concern hesitating for a moment before speaking. “Was . . . Was It About Sansy?” For a moment Red was frozen they didn’t talk about him especially in one of the Council hallways everyone was a nosey fucker here. Seeing Lapis hand reaching out towards him snapped him back into his mind. Snarling at his stupid guilty face “just stay the hell out of it.” Red wasn’t going to take this not from him. He didn’t care about how upset stupid Lapis looked the way his eyes shined like he was going to cry fucking pathetic . . . He didn’t care.

It was both a relief and painful to be back in his universe. Memories good and bad too easy to fall into. All he ever grew up with and knowing that it was shit compared to the rest of the multiverse. Well there was one good thing about this universe. The smell of Lasagna gently whiffed out of the kitchen. Edge. No, Papyrus. It was nice to see him enjoying the things he loved again. When Sansy . . . disappeared the house got quieter, sadder. Sansy had given Papyrus part of a life he never thought he would get, never thought he would ever deserve. Leaving him, leaving Papyrus it destroyed all that Sansy had help build up. “SIGH. BROTHER ARE YOU JUST GOING TO DAWDLE ALL DAY OR ARE YOU GOING TO HELP SET THE TABLE LAZYBONE.” Yeah it was good to be back. Making sure to do it as slowly as possible so Papyrus knew he didn’t like it he put the damn plates and forks on the table. “Did you really say sigh out loud.” Words tumbled out of his mouth in a chuckle shaking his head. Sansy had help mend the bond between the two brothers in some ways Red had been scared that Sansy disappearance would tear their relationship apart and it would be back to how it used to be just angrier and sadder.

Welp he was stuffed and as much as he would love to help Papyrus clean up Red was being drawn to bed really unfortunate, truly. Not like Papyrus stopped him not anymore. The bed was messy, the room was trashed, even the trash tornado was messed up. Sansy always preferred things nice and neat but Red just couldn’t anytime he thought of just getting off his stupid add and grabbing a trash bag to clean up he felt paralyzed. Numb in a way that was a cold familiarity. No matter how hard he tried to push himself to stop being a lazy good for nothing brother he . . . he just couldn’t. Ignoring the feeling of walking on trash and something sticky. Gross. His bed was nice and on the ground perfect for him to pathetically crawl into and flop down on it. He felt so damn tired all the time like he just wanted to sleep forever but Red knew how dangerous of a road that was to go down. He couldn’t be sure he would be able to Get Up again. The tornado was nice a lulling whooshing pushing his head to sleep.
Quiet laughter reverberated around him. The darkness slowly retreating as the voices got louder. “Oh, come on Ruby stay in bed with me it’s so nice and cozy.” Sansy sounded so happy. “Sansy, it’s 3 in the damn afternoon we can’t just nap all day.” As firm as Red was trying to be Sansy had was easily lowering him to lay back down. Curling deeper into Red’s side he lout out a quiet sigh. He sounded a bit more exhausted then he would be he had been sleeping plenty and taking naps so Red worried about him Falling Down. “I love you My Ruby.” Despite the way he mumbled it into his neck it still cased a flare of heat in his chest everytime Sansy said it no matter how many damn times he said it. It felt like falling in love all over again. Sometimes, Red questioned if this was all a dream to really have someone like Sansy in his life. “Hey, Ruby I . . . I need to tell you something. Something important okay?” His face was shaded blocking Red from seeing his face what expression had he made then. “Okay, darling whatever it is you can tell me.” Even after Red finished speaking the silence continued but Red could use some of his long forgotten patience if it was for Sansy. “There is soBRINGBRINGBRINGBRINGBRINGBRINGBRING—“ it got louder and louder his head was going to explode from the noise. Finally, he jerked away but the ringing hadn’t stopped.

That stupid fucking alert had fallen into his eyesocket and have him a damn headache. Spitting it out he checked the alert message seeing it was from Lapis requesting backup. At least he could get some of his frustration and anger out on a nice battle. Throwing on his jacket and putting his emergency knife in his pocket he didn’t hesitate to shortcut to Lapis.

He almost got a bone to the socket for his trouble. Seemed like Dust would be their opponent today Lapis was already fighting him. Neither had injured the other or gotten close to defeating the other. He was just sitting on his blaster watching Lapis fight below sending wave after wave of magic attacks while not having to defend himself when Lapis was a close range fighter. Red didn’t hesitate to whip some attacks towards his face but Dust easily side stepped. Yeah this was going to be a hell of a fight. Lapis acted as their defense smashing attacks sent and using walls to block blast. Red would be their offense focused on sending attacks towards Dust hoping to get him to move off his blaster where Lapis could get close and take him down.

It had been going well until an attack neither of them expected shot out from behind. “RUBY, BEHIND YOU!” If Lapis warning had come a second too late Red would be dust smeared across the ground. “Lapis what did I say about calling me fucking, Ruby!” He did seem sheepish but he didn’t look guilty enough in Red opinion. “Sorry, It Just Happened In The Heat Of The Moment, Red.” Lapis had a loud voice and unfortunately for them it had gained the attention of the absolutely worst person they could fight, Killer.

Killer easily cuts into battle destroying Red’s attack and dancing around Lapis swings. “Dust go help Horror out against the double blueberries. I’ll graciously take this battle off your hands.” Dust tilts his head around like he’s rolling his eyes although you can’t actually see if he does when his hood consumed all light leaving his face in perpetual darkness. Classic joins into the battle and tries to force both of them to stay as soon as one of the trio fell it would be easier to push. Killer isn’t even fazed pulling all three into battle allowing Dust to slip out. The real battle was about to begin. Dust was playing with them like a cat and a mouse but Killer looked uncharacteristically serious. Killer is ruthless cuts down attacks faster then they can refire almost dances into close range. Spins and attacks faster then they could keep up even with trying to slow him down with pure numbers of attacks he either dodges or slashes them apart. He’s on Classic first swirling into his circle grabbing him by the jacket and slamming him onto the ground then whacks him in the head with the hilt of his knife Classic doesn’t get up knocked unconscious. Lapis is realizing that Killer isn’t here to play or have a fun battle he’s going to take them out before they can try and do something. Dodging and weaving he gets into Lapis space who reflectively swings his attacks but even that close Killer dodges only getting a scratch for all of Lapis troubles. He’s kicked in the chest hard enough that Red can hear his ribs crack and whine he attempts to get him off Lapis with attacks and even using fire magic Killer is relentless. Dashing through the flames towards Lapis struggling to get up and lands harshly on top of him stabbing a knife to the hilt into the ground below pinning his scarf in place and he’s quick to do more between bones and clothing completely pinning him down. Finally he turns to him and Red is quick surrounded himself with walls upon walls of fire it makes it harder to see through the flames but if Killer wants to get close he’ll see him going through the flaming ring around him before Killer can lock onto him. Quick as a viper Killer had circled behind him then simply went through the flames twisting around his body like a snake he used his wait to slam Red into the ground below him now straddling his waist. There wasn’t a damn burn even on his clothing shit he didn’t know enough about Killer to know how to fight him.

Lapis is pinned down by Killers knives stabbing into his clothing through the dirt to the hilt of the blades a kind of force that could tear off limbs. Classic just seemed knocked out and now it was just the two of them. Killer easily held him down even as Red struggled underneath him. Slowly, Killer leans his head forward and whispers on the side of his skull. The world began to slow as what he said registered in his mind for a moment he was completely frozen only able to gaze at—at Killer above him. Lapis tries to catch his gaze but he’s paralyzed watching Killer above him wants to move his hand do something but it’s like he’s stuck in molasses.

Nightmare calls out that their leaving and Killer easily flows off of him. Red grabs his hand before he can go too far. “please don’t go Sansy.” He knew his voice was desperate and pathetic but he couldn’t stop the way his voice warbled in long repressed grief. Emotions that Red had pushed down again and again from fear of facing the truth. Killer just smiles angelically down looking at him blankly. “We’ll see each other again soon that I am certain, My Ruby.” With that Killer twisted out of his grasp and shortcut away. It was like Sansy–Killer had stabbed him through the soul. Watching as he left while Red was forced to have to change his entire worldview knowing Sansy was alive and someone else entirely now.
