Kongthap was focused, headphones on and fingers moving with precision over the controller. It was a ranked match, the kind where a second of distraction means defeat.
In the hallway, the soft friction of bare feet announced Atom’s arrival.
He appeared at the door dragging a blanket, eyes half—closed with sleep and hair tousled, walking in silence to the gaming chair. Kongthap noticed his presence out of the corner of his eye but didn’t look away from the screen; as soon as he felt Atom’s sleepy hands brush his shoulders, his body reacted automatically.
Without letting go of the controller, Kongthap spread his legs slightly and lifted his arms, creating the perfect space. It was a movement choreographed by habit.
Atom climbed up carefully, sitting astride Kongthap’s lap; he settled in and let out a sigh of satisfaction, hiding his face in the crook of Kongthap’s neck, inhaling that scent that always calmed him, and wrapped his arms around his waist, like a cat that has found the warmest spot in the house and went back to sleep.
Kongthap didn’t even flinch when Atom’s weight settled on him. His fingers kept flying over the buttons while he felt Atom’s slow breathing against his neck.
A few minutes of absolute silence passed, broken only by the rhythmic click—click of the controller.
When the «WINNER» sign finally appeared on the screen, Kongthap let out a long sigh and dropped the controller. He stayed like that for a moment, enjoying Atom’s warmth before taking off his headphones.
“Was the bed that uncomfortable without me?” Kongthap asked, kissing Atom’s temple.
Atom let out an unintelligible mumble, tightening the grip of his arms around Kongthap’s waist; in his sleep, he sought more contact, nuzzling his nose against his boyfriend’s neck.
Then Kongthap carefully placed his hands under Atom’s thighs and stood up from the chair. Atom didn’t even open his eyes; he simply let out a low moan of protest at the movement.
“Shh, I’m taking you now,” Kongthap whispered, his voice vibrating directly against Atom’s ear.
Upon reaching the bedroom, Kongthap laid him on the bed with delicacy, trying not to break that bubble of dream; but as soon as his body touched the mattress, Atom reached out a hand blindly, catching Kongthap’s shirt before he could pull away.
“Don’t go…” Atom mumbled, voice soft and eyes still closed. “Your side is cold… it’s illegal to leave it like that.”
Kongthap let out a little laugh and slipped under the covers; Atom didn’t waste a second as soon as he felt the mattress sink with Kongthap’s weight, he pulled him toward him as if fearing he would evaporate. He tangled his legs with his boyfriend’s and rested his cheek right over Kongthap’s heart, using his chest as the most comfortable pillow in the world.
They stayed like that, in a comfortable silence where only the rhythmic breathing of both could be heard. Kongthap closed his eyes, feeling the exhaustion from training and the tension of the game vanish completely.
Little by little, Atom’s grip on Kongthap’s shirt loosened, his fingers relaxing as deep sleep finally claimed him. Kongthap held him a little closer, resting his chin on top of his boyfriend’s head, and let himself be swept away by the same tide of calm.
