It was 6 am and unfortunately you had to go to work. Who told you it was a good idea to get a part time job at this time of the year? Experience? Money? You did not know anymore. But god you sometimes wished you never completed that cursed job application. You were happy to bring some money of your own to contribute around the house, but day by day you realise that this is clearly not the job for you. But alas, you signed up for three months of this shit, so you got to take it to the end.
The rising sun let out a soft light into you and your lover’s bedroom. The birds were chirping and the breeze made the blooming leaves on the trees shuffle. God you really wanted to stay in bed and to admire this sunrise - not go to work and then crash on the couch the moment you’d return home! But that was not the only reason why you wanted to stay. You wanted to cuddle up with your girlfriend more. Her warmth was what you needed right now - and the cold that awaited you once you'd step out of your apartment was really not welcoming. Her arms were wrapped around your waist and it broke your heart that you had to get up and leave her alone here for more than 5 hours.
You sighed and tried your best to gently scoot over from her embrace, making sure to not wake her up. She was drooling on the pillows and looking so blissful, soft yellow light contouring her features. She was so adorable and you could only smile. You genuinely felt really bad you had to go…
You bit your lip as you slowly got up, now you were sitting on the bed. Her arms were still around you and you could swear she was getting closer, to feel your warmth on her body more, not just her hands. You caressed her hair gently and you could hear a soft purr coming from her.
She shifted herself, slowly climbing your body. She was now awake, or at least…somewhat awake. Her messy black hair draped over the both of you, and she murmured, as if to express some sort of distress. Her hands tightened around your waist more, as she nuzzled into you.
“Mmmrnmm…No…” She spoke, her voice raspy and you could not make anything out of it.
“Yi Xi…I have to go to work, honey” you replied, voice carrying guilt in its pitch.
“mmno!!” she proclaimed, hugging tighter and grabbing your shirt with determination. In response, you pet her hair again, apologising for the fact that you have to leave her behind here.
“I’ll return as soon as I can, but I have to leave-”
“Please don’t go…I miss you..” Yi Xi’s voice was groggy and rumbling with a pleading tone. Damn, you could not do this to her, you could not let her be cold in this bed of yours. Your duty as a lover had a call stronger than the one of the cash register. You took a good look at her. Hair so messy, eyes half open it still seemed like she was asleep and talking like she was in a dream, drool pooling at her lips. She looked like a needy kitten. You could not abandon her just for a lousy job that you’d only have for a few more months. But at the same time…
“Yi Xi…” you attempted to negotiate with her again, just through your whisper. But she was not having it at all.
“Hmph!” Yi Xi protested again, inching closer and making sure she held you in place - resting all her weight on you.
“Honey I have to go-”
“Just call in sick today…mmfhyou always go to work and mmm-we get so little days together…just let me have this…only today…please”
Groggy as it was, her voice was also shaky with sadness. She wanted you this morning. She needed you. And you also needed her. Fuck work man. She was more important than work, and in truth, you’ve never taken any days off to tend to her and love her, just as she deserved.
You sighed, and scooped up her form into your arms, letting her rest her head onto your chest. Your hands traveled on her back, and caressed her. You gently moved your fingers through her messy hair, feeling her thick and dense strands glide between your digits. She started to purr again, and soon enough she was giggling, just like a little kid who finally got to buy tons of candy. You could not help but also chuckle, grabbing her and leaning back on the pillows, surrounding her with your arms and keeping her as close as you can. Your legs interlocked as you took the blanket and readjusted it over the two of you.
Your heart was filled with a feeling of safety and warmth. This is where you should be that morning. With Yi Xi in bed, cuddled, while the soft light of the sun slowly snaked its way more into your room, while the birds were singing lullabies, and while the trees shuffled peacefully like a wind-chime.
You were thinking of grabbing your phone to call in sick but…That was too much effort, and that thought slowly ran away from your mind as you felt yourself falling asleep into Yi Xi’s arms, both of you slipping away into a state of pure idyllic bliss.
