Dear Max,
I just wanted to let you know that I got your letter and that there's something that you need to understand. You have nothing to be sorry for. It's me who should be sorry.
I am sorry.
After mom left me behind, I was just so angry, and that anger just kept growing over time. As you know, me and dad didn't get along. We hated each other. Or at least I always thought he hated me until your letter. My biggest regret in life is that I took my anger out on you.
You're right, we never got to truly know each other.
I wish I could've taken you skateboarding because you probably don't know this but when I was your age, I was way better at skating than you. Something else you probably didn't know is that I was always jealous about your ability to make friends and that you had 2 parents who truly loved you.
I want you to know that I don't blame you for my death, and the fact that you cried for me in my final moments even with how terrible I was, meant everything to me. I hope one day you can forgive me. And when the time comes for you to finally cross over to the other side, after you've lived a long, full, meaningful life, (unlike me), I want you to know that I'll be the first person you see and hopefully we can start over again. Until then, I'll be waiting patiently.
