Work Text:
Everett lets out a low whistle as James opens the door to his new quarters in Ops. "Look at this," he says. "Very fancy."
James snorts, because it's not. It's just two beds, two nightsands, two armoires, and two armchairs, a clean path down the middle of the room, the other items laid out in mirror image. He steps to one side and circles the bed on the left to sit in the armchair and watch Ev open the armoire like he knew he would. "Snoop," he teases.
Ev turns and grins at him. "Hey, good to know where you might be hiding a one-night stand."
James rolls his eyes. "You're the only one I have, and you won't leave," he says.
Ev walks over and stands in front of James. "You asking me to leave?"
"No," James says, and for a moment, the words catch in his throat. "Part of the promotion is getting to choose my roommate."
Ev stares at him for a moment, then blinks, then beams. "Oh, yeah?" he asks.
"Thought I'd ask you," James adds as Ev just smiles at him.
Ev looks around the room again. "Kind of a small space," he says. "We should rearrange a little. Push the beds together, maybe. It does get cold at night."
James laughs. "Yeah, that's the reason." He rubs his hands on the arms of his chair. "I asked, but Jack says there's no sofas or loveseats or anything, so we'll have to deal with having to sit in separate chairs."
Ev glances at the chair across the room. He looks at James. He drops onto James's lap and throws his legs over one arm of the chair. "Nah," he says.
James wraps his arms around Ev's waist and just watches him for a moment. Ev's looking everywhere again, as though the room has more to see than what's already there. "When we get home," James says slowly, feeling slightly terrified to say those words out loud, "I'll get you any sofa you want."
Ev turns towards him again and holds James's face in his hands. "We're gonna make it," he says. "I promise."
James turns his head to kiss Ev's palm. It always feels wild and dangerous for Ev to say it, but it keeps being true. "I wish I was still going up with you," he says into James's skin. "I know it's better to be down here doing the work I'm doing, but—"
"I miss you, too," Ev replies. "Even if I haven't gone up without you yet."
James tightens his arms around Ev's waist. Ev leans in and gives him a smacking kiss that makes James snort in amusement.
"So, you wanna move in?"
Ev shrugs like it's nothing, though his eyes shine with quiet, contented pleasure. "Sure, but if I have to hide in the armoire, I want a blanket."
"Deal," James says and steals another kiss.
