Work Text:
It’s Easter, and your family isn’t all that religious. You pretend to be in order to be accepted by the masses of society, but in reality, you think that nobody actually cares. Nobody except your dad. You guess he was raised religious. Or the opposite happened. Maybe he wasn’t religious at all and someone scared him into it. You can’t judge his decision to make you play pretend Catholic though, because it gives you an excuse to wear cute dresses on Sunday mass (when you do attend) (which is barely!).
You don’t know too much about Easter, other than Jegus coming back to life. That sounds pretty sick. You’d also like to come back to life if you ever died.
Fortunately enough, your dad doesn’t force you to go to mass today. He tells you that you’ll be able to spend time with your friends and family.
You like your friends. And your family.
JUNE: i thought you would’ve wanted to do something though.
JUNE: are you upset?
DAD: I AM ANYTHING BUT UPSET, JUNEBUG.
DAD: I AM SIMPLY ALL WORKED OUT. I’VE RUN OUT OF CHURCH FRIENDLY TIES.
You thought that all of his ties were “church friendly” but never mind(!) you guess. You’d think that there’s worse things to life than going to church without a proper tie on, or any tie at all. Do priests actually care? You don’t. (And shouldn’t your opinion be more important? You’re HIS daughter, after all!)
JUNE: oh ok.
JUNE: do i still get an easter basket? pleaseeeeee.
DAD: THAT IS WHY I TOLD YOU TO COME HERE. LOOK HERE.
You stare at your dad as if he’s your savior. He’s holding a basket with lots of candy. Some sour, but mostly sweet. It’s also got a card, but who cares about that. You’re so happy! You might as well scream.
JUNE: yay!!! thank you dad!!!! :D
DAD: YOU ARE WELCOME.
DAD: I HOPE YOU LIKE THOSE TREATS. I’LL BE MAKING YOU SOME CAKE LATER ON TONIGHT.
Yeah, screaming is a reasonable response now.
JUNE: umm. maybe not a cake today.
JUNE: i don’t want to get a stomach ache from all the sugar.
DAD: GOOD POINT. I WILL MAKE IT TOMORROW.
JUNE: uuuhhhh huh. that’s good too.
If only you were allergic to frosting. You look away from your fathers face and you sit on the kitchen floor, tearing away at the plastic that covers all your candy.
You don’t plan on finishing it all right now, but you get a bulk of it done anyways. Your dad doesn’t look at you that much while you’re snacking away.
JUNE: mmm, didya make anyone else a basket?
DAD: DON’T TALK WITH YOUR MOUTH FULL, DAUGHTER.
JUNE: shorry.
You chew quicker so that you can talk to him. Talking to your dad is more fun than candy. He’s an interesting man.
JUNE: who else did you make a basket for?
DAD: A LADY.
JUNE: huh? what lady?
DAD: A LADY THAT I ENJOY BEING AROUND. SHE’S AWFULLY KIND.
JUNE: ohh. that’s fun.
JUNE: if dave lived around here, i would get him a basket. and then i would get jade a basket too. and i would even get rose a basket.
JUNE: they’re all nice to me.
DAD: I AM GLAD THAT I HAVE RAISED SUCH A KIND DAUGHTER.
DAD: ATTA GIRL.
JUNE: hehehe. i try. :P
You sit up from the cold ground, going back to smiling at your dad.
JUNE: i love you! thank you for the basket.
DAD: YOU’RE WELCOME.
DAD: I AM GOING TO START MAKING DINNER NOW. LET YOUR SISTER KNOW.
JUNE: wait, not yet.
You move closer to him and you wrap your arms around him. You’re still very short compared to him, but one day you’ll grow as tall as he is, hopefully. You’re unsure if he’s enjoying the hug because you can’t see his face, but you really hope that he does like it. You haven’t hugged someone this hard in a long time.
JUNE: merry easter.
DAD: YOU CAN SAY HAPPY EASTER INSTEAD.
JUNE: okay. happy easter.
JUNE: i love you. thank you.
DAD: I LOVE YOU AS WELL.
DAD: I LOVE YOU SO MUCH.
