Work Text:
The party was boring, dreadfully so.
Rui himself was all dressed up proper, an itchy suit that was too tight in the wrong places. Where the way the fabric shifted at each movement made his entire body want to seize up and disintegrate.
Perhaps the only good thing in this entire ballroom was…
There.
His darling Tsukasa-kun in a slightly fancier uniform standing stiffly in a corner. Oh how dull he was, sticking to his post perfectly. After a multitude of adjustments to his garment, Rui sidled up to the knight.
“My star.”
A very amusing yell came from the blonde, whose head whipped around to find the one and only Kamishiro Rui beside him.
Tsukasa attempted composure, acting out a polite bow. “Is there something urgent, your highness?”
“Still the ever attentive chevalier, I see. Why in fact there is!” Rui clasped his hands, his face relaxing into a perfectly innocent smile, fit for an angel. “I'm awfully lonely, you know…”
He was met with an expected look of confusion, shaking his head in disappointment. “Goodness, for my appointed bodyguard and fiancé you are oddly terrible at appeasing me. Dance with me, my star.”
“Dance? You don't possibly expect a knight to know how—”
“Of course I don't, I'm not one to overestimate people. Alas, I will be more than happy to direct you on the stage,” Rui swept his arm up, then lowered into a bow, one hand outstretched in wait.
His smile only grew as he felt the weight of that familiar gloved hand. Sneaking a kiss to his knuckles before guiding Tsukasa in the center of the dancefloor.
The two started out slow, letting the knight grow accustomed to the simplest steps of the waltz. Slowly as Tsukasa grew bolder Rui quickened the pace, the two laughing at the absurdity of their dance. Toes were stepped on, trips happened, but they were happy. It's been so long since he's had Tsukasa happy and smiling freely.
They stopped dancing in a field of lilies sometime, the scenery seemed to shift weirdly, almost like a dream. He's still in his scratchy suit unfortunately.
Tsukasa is dipped down, clutching onto Rui's shoulders for security.
“Could you let me stand?”
“Oya… How demanding you are,” Rui protests, straightening the knight, but not without taking his payment of a kiss.
It feels oddly strange, he's happy, but there's no rush of happiness as to when they usually kiss.
Nonsense, it's his star. There's no way he doesn’t love his star.
They part after a while, the scenery is now in the gardens under a gazebo. Tsukasa's face is beautifully red, blush blooming like flowers across his whole body. The small ways he'd try to act normal, the little hints that show just how shy he gets about affection. Like the way his grip borders between tight and loose, how his eyes are fixed just above Rui's brows, how his lips press into a thin line, trying to hide a smile.
Rui could sit in his study all week writing about how he loves Tsukasa, and he'd only barely graze the surface of his affection. Perhaps if he was a writer he could spread stories about how adorable, charming, handsome, and captivating his star was—
“Stop that.”
“Stop what?”
“The staring.”
“Sorry.”
He was not sorry.
Tsukasa lightly pushes Rui in the chest, eyes diverting down to the jabot collar adorning the prince, who only cries out in dramatic pain. A hand against his chest while his face pleads for mercy.
“You've injured me, my dear.”
“I barely touched you!”
“Please, repay me with another kiss. Perhaps after, get on one knee and perform a soliloquy about your love for me as well,” Rui is swooping in for his very well deserved second kiss already, eyes closing as he expects to land against soft lips once more.
The servants pull up the blinds, ready his outfit, and gently wake him up as they ready him for the rest of the day. Rui looks down at his wedding band, a heavy sickness curls in his stomach as he is reminded of his marriage with a woman who is not Tenma Tsukasa.
