“I made bacon for breakfast in the mornin’.”

The BLU Engineer mumbled sleepily, sitting on the bed in his workshop. It was dark, the cluttered space was illuminated only by a small lamp in the corner of the room, scraps of metal and a bunch of currently disabled sentries reflected the warm glow emanating from the old lightbulb.

“The boys loved it. I made some for everyone. I made some for ya, too. It's a shame ya couldn't make it to breakfast.”

His tired blue eyes were looking up at a slender man sitting next to him, the view finally unobstructed by neither his helmet nor the tinted goggles. He shifted slightly, leaning more of his weight against the man, his arm loosely wrapped around him.

“I know, mon cœur. I too hoped that monsieur Medic wouldn’t take so long reattaching my head to my body.” The BLU Spy's voice was quieter and raspier than usual, still kind of odd, unfamiliar, changed by all the time his body had spent in the freezer. His shoulders shuddered, and Engie adjusted one of the many blankets draped around the Frenchman.

“The cold will pass soon, darlin’.” He sighed, placing a small kiss on the Spy's collarbone. Despite thawing out for a while, the sense of cold lingered deep in Spy’s bones after what probably was months –if not more– of being stored at the back of a food grade freezer. Of course, the freezer was the only reason why his body did not deteriorate and rot while being unable to respawn; but the slow return of metabolic functions, blood flow, and senses were proving to be more painful than anyone had assumed.

The Engineer got up from the bed, earning a dissatisfied look from Spy still cooped up in the blankets, yet the look softened immediately when he saw his husband bring him another cup of steaming hot tea. “Many thanks.” The Spy thankfully took the mug from Engie, gladly warming his gloved hands against the warm ceramics. He took a small sip of the beverage, hissing quietly when it burned the tip of his tongue.

They sat next to each other, the only sounds in the room their breaths - Spy’s still shuddering, Engie’s somewhat uneven; as well as a constant buzz of a dispenser that its creator had reassigned for a beer cooler a long time ago. The base around them was quiet as well. Spy had left the Medical in the late evening, meaning that by now most of the mercenaries were asleep. Only an occasional word came muffled from Heavy’s room down the corridor, him and his own partner still discussing something before their bedtime.

“I love you. I am so happy to have you back.” Engie broke the silence, causing his husband to look down at him. Despite being married for a long chunk of time, such open displays of verbal affection still sometimes took the Frenchman by surprise.

He sat unmoving for a second before smiling warmly. “Je t'aime aussi, petit chou-fleur.” He murmured and bowed his head, his still cold lips brushing against Engie’s bushy yet well-kept beard.

It felt as if that was the only thing the Texan was waiting for. He immediately knelt up on the bed and took Spy’s head in his broad hands, the calloused fingers of his left hand gently stroking Spy’s hair through the thin fabric of the dark blue mask. Their lips pressed against each other, at first gently, then with more force as Engie felt more and more greedy for his lover’s touch he had not felt for so long.

Attends, attends, mon chou, let me just…” The Spy pulled back with a small gasp for air. He put the tea mug away and then with one swift move he pulled the mask off, tossing it onto the bed next to them.

It was like encouragement that did not need to be repeated. The Engineer’s fingers ran through his lover’s salt and pepper hair, his hands pulling him closer. Their lips once again connected, Engie’s teeth gently nibbling on Spy’s cold bottom lip. Spy’s eyes closed in long awaited pleasure, his ashy skin finally getting a bit of colour on the cheeks the longer the kiss lasted.

They pulled apart to take a deeper breath, and Engie used that time to sprinkle Spy’s unshaven jaw with small smooches. The Frenchman giggled, his back arching. “It tickles, mon plaisir quotidien-” He managed to let out, feeling his lover’s mustache brush against his cheek.

The Spy rarely laughed. Sure, he often chuckled and snickered mockingly on the battlefield, but true, genuine laughter was much more unlikely than that. One of the reasons for that was that he did not like his laughter all that much. There was nothing distinguished or gentlemanly about the way his shoulders shook, his breath wheezed and small snorts left him occasionally. Besides, true laughter was an indication of a rather strong emotion; and living his entire life shielded behind a mask of indifference and play of pretend, showing emotions made him feel more vulnerable than he would like to admit.

Which was exactly why Engie was so surprised, hearing his lover’s giggles turn into a deep, genuine laughter. At first he froze for a heartbeat but then he joined in, the passionate atmosphere from mere seconds ago gone, yet neither of them minded. Spy involuntarily snorted and both of them began to laugh even more, their backs shaking, Engie embracing his husband through a thick layer of multiple blankets wrapped around the thawing Frenchman. “I’m sorry, your beard-”

“Do you want me to shave it off?” Engie chuckled teasingly, raising an eyebrow at the Spy, who coughed and shook his head.

Non, non, don’t get rid of it. It makes you look… alright. I just forgot how much it tickled.” The Spy protested, and nuzzled his face against Engie’s short, pale hair. “Don’t shave it.” He repeated in a quiet murmur.

“I won’t, darlin’. I was just jokin’.” The Texan reassured him and let out a long, content sigh. “You have no idea how happy I am to finally have you back.”

“Oh, I think I do. Sitting in that RED madman’s fridge was absolute torture. I am really glad to be back.” The Spy nodded and allowed himself to smile, his pale face brightening up just a little bit when his lover reciprocated the smile. “Je t'aime, l'amour de ma vie.”

“I love you too, honey.” Engie closed his eyes and again leaned against his husband, their bodies perfectly fitting against each other like two pieces of a finally finished puzzle.
