A Close Eye

Summary:

Saiki Kusuo watches the man he respects from a fair distance… He doesn’t ever swear to get closer to Satou than that. But what happens when the stoic psychic starts to question if his feelings are past admiration or not? Will the normal guy ever think of Saiki as more than strangers?

First fic, kinda scared.. making this half for fun and half not, there’s barely any fics of this rarepair! may or may not continue though..

Notes:

This is my first fic! So sorry if anything is wrong or not to your liking, and heh hope you enjoyy (pray that I get better in the future 🙏). And sorry, I just realised how short this chapter is…

Chapter 1: It’s not stalking, I’m just walking close behind.

Chapter Text

The afternoon Sun draped itself lazily across the empty classroom, Saiki turned to the window, narrowing his eyes as he felt the gentle light. He stayed behind after school, though it was a miracle he didn’t get dragged out with his friends—it took them a bit to leave without Saiki… Why did they want to stick beside him a lot anyways?

Using his telepathy, he eavesdropped on Satou’s conversation with his cliché friends… He has baseball practice after school. Should he go watch Satou play? Is he totally average in baseball too? He leaned against a table as he crossed his arms, his bag carried at the crook of his arm as he thought.

“I should, I could learn from him—my average 101 teacher. Hm, I don’t even play baseball, but that’s irrelevant.”

He pushed himself off the table as he walked out of the classroom, his mind now set in his decision to watch Satou. His shoes tapped against the ground, the sunlight enveloping the floors in a golden glow, the well-cleaned floor reflecting the light onto the walls as well. He took the stairs down as he left the school doors. He could already hear the chatter of the students who stayed back. He found his way to where Satou would be, standing beside the fences as his eyes darted around for him.

“Eh, where is he…”

“Oh, there he is. He didn’t do anything yet he already looks invisible.”

Saiki stood still, watching Satou closely as soon as he had found him. Keeping a close eye with every move, Satou had once gotten a home run,

“Lucky. Rare but not impossible.” Saiki nodded as he appreciated the action silently, he adored Satou in everything hedoes, average or not—he didn’t even realize it himself.

It was time for the baseball team to pack up, it had become evening now. The Sun set low into the horizon, setting the sky into a color as blue as Teruhashi’s hair, making way for the Moon to step in. Satou took his things and started to leave the ground, noticing this, Saiki realized it’s better for Satou to not notice him for now.. After all, what would he think seeing a guy just standing there doing nothing? So, Saiki turned around and walked out of the gates before Satou could see him.

On his way home, Saiki came across a convenience centre, as he head tilted to the windows of the shop.. He saw a beloved coffee jelly, so then of course, he stepped in and looked through the packaged cups of bittersweet goodness. Interrupting his contemplating of choices, he noticed a voice in his head that sounded all too familiar….

Satou Hiroshi! The ultra-average guy Saiki aspires to be! In the same convenience store as him looking for his own favorite, peach tea! Saiki stopped in his place, his thoughts working together to ponder if he should go approach him…

“Good grief.. I ended up walking out the store with a plastic bag of coffee jelly instead of Satou…”

Saiki breathed out a sigh of disappointment, his head brewing a storm, the coffee jelly he just bought not even enough to calm it. He got frustrated as he ignored his chance with Satou, the most he got from being in the store with Satou was a simple glance, not even a thought of acknowledgment.. But a glance.

Once Saiki got home, he got comfortable and started to eat his delicacy with enjoyment. Barely… He barely enjoyed it, he just ate mindlessly as multiple possibilities ran through his head.

“Would he still be considered ordinary if I were friends with him? What’s so ordinary about being friends with a psychic? But then again… How would people know I’m a psychic in the first place? Ah, good grief… Should I just leave him alone so he would stay my God of Normality?”

He reflected silently to himself, those thoughts just a simple glimpse into his head. There were many things to come if he and Satou actually knew each other more than strangers. Would Satou become abnormal? Or would Satou influence Saiki into being normal?

“Mnh… Should I risk his reputation of being average so that I can become average? Does that make sense?”

———Next Morning———

Saiki left his thoughts out to rest as he had done so too the night before. Now, hurriedly walking past his companions, he had set his destination to his classroom. Yet on the way, Saiki noticed a certain classroom—Year 2 Class 2…

He slowed his pace, trying to look for that easy-to-miss guy… He stopped in his tracks as he saw Satou, taking in his olive-green eyes focused on a book. That was one of his hobbies, Saiki knew that. Satou loved reading and playing games in his free time..

But he couldn’t linger around too long now, as for someone had just interrupted his dear time watching Mr Standard… That voice pierced through Saiki’s head…

“Saiki-kun!~”

“Good grief…”

It was just his name… But the person saying it was enough to make him want to disappear! Without a beat, Saiki immediately got walking, forgetting about Satou—it’s easier than you think… He just disappears in your mind like a background character. Coming back to Ms PK, suddenly seeing Saiki walk off,

“H-Hey, why is he getting away? Surely, he must’ve heard my voice!”

Thankfully, their class was right next door so Saiki was able to get away… Kinda.. He still didn’t get peace even during class, he could feel Teruhashi’s piercing eyes on him and her endless, endless thoughts throughout class.

“Why was he just standing there? Is there someone in that class he likes? Why’d he get away from me? MYVOICEWASPLENTYLOUDANDHEAVENLYFORHIMTOPAYATTENTIONTO!!”

The school bell rang all throughout the school, it was time for break. Good grief, it was about time! Saiki couldn’t handle the immense gaze directed at him, but things were just about to get even more problematic.. Once Saiki had gotten up, there stood his friends surrounding his desk.

“Hey, pal!”

“Saiki, tell me you don’t feel this disturbance in the air!”

“Hey, Saiki, how was class?”

“ARE YOU ALL FIRED UP AND READY FOR THE NEXT LESSONS?!”

“Saiki… Saiki-kun! Listen!”

“I could feel a disturbance in the air… It’s you guys! Good grief, I can’t get a moment of solitude..”

“I need to go to the toilet.”

He spat out without a thought—that seemed the most easiest, and convincing thing he could say to get out of this situation. So, with a bit of setbacks, he managed to walk out of the doors without any one following behind him.

With this opportunity, he walked to the class next to his and stood closely at the door, looking for Satou once more… And there he was! Having a good, normal conversation with two of his friends.

“Oh? Hey, Saiki!”

Coming from inside the same classroom he was peering in, there came Toritsuka. He approached Saiki, standing in front of him as Saiki recalled that he was in the same class as Satou.

“Not stalking again, are you?”

“It’s not stalking, just… Mere observing.”

“Have you ever tried bringing the observation closer? Say, maybe.. Actually talking with Mr Standard?”

He gave no reply, the lack of response was all Toritsuka needed. He nodded, understanding what was all going on now, a grin grew on his face as a slight snicker was heard, looks like he was going to tease Saiki about it…

“Sounds awful lot like a crush. People watch their crushes without actually interacting with them, y’know that? Didn’t know you swung that way though… I didn’t even know you swung anywhere at all!”

“It’s not a crush, I don’t love anyone, Toritsuka.”

He replied back almost immediately, trying to defend himself against the accusation of having feelings for Satou…

“Sure, sure… So, you wouldn’t mind talking to him, right?”

Toritsuka asked, the cheeky smile on his face still visible. He was determined to see how Saiki feels about the guy he respects the most..
