Coral Grief

Summary:

Takes place after Blue and Green World, Paisley and Rex go their separate ways after she resigns herself from Pave Nature INC.

Work Text:

He practically skipped through the halls, heading towards his boss's office. She had came back from paving the beach with Zach, and was, for some reason, stuck in her office since then. He knew she probably didn't wanna be bothered yet wanted to check up on her and make sure she was doing fine.

Rex held a fake flower in his hand. Blue petals but fake since she obviously had a distaste for nature. He started talking to himself in his head." I'm glad Paisley is back..although—"

He thought to himself as he reached the door. "I thought it would have taken longer..oh well! She's so good at this kinda stuff so she probably finished it quick!"

He turned the doorknob, the door creaking open as he saw the CEO stand at her desk with an empty box. He seemed confused but left it at that as he smiled up at her. "Pais!! You're back, how are ya?"

Her eyes widened and her head snapped up to look at the door.

"..oh Rex.."

He walked up to her, hiding the plastic flower behind his back. "I've been waiting for ya!.." "Rex, please I can't right now." She said, her head tilting down a bit, and crossing her arms. "I got a little something for you since-" "Rex!"

Rex paused, his eyes trailing down to Paisley's shaky hands as she looked up at him. "Please. I need to talk to you." She continued to look at him, seeing his facial expression and trying to explain herself. "Sorry. I just—..I have something to ask you." She rested her hand on the desk.

"..Yeah, Pais. Of course." Worried, he rested his hand on Paisley's, which made her pull away. He attempted to pull her hand back on instinct but stopped himself as she spoke.

"Would you-..be upset or-…or mad if I changed?" She asked.

"What?? Of course not! Why would I be?" He put a smile on his face as if this were to be a dumb question.

Paisley nodded and tried to be firm with what she wanted to say to him, but looked at him. She saw that goofy grin and knew it would be wiped away with a single sentence.

"I'm done. I'm resigning from the company."

And she was right.

His smile dropped in a matter of seconds, and he turned around to process this. Paisley walked out from behind the desk, going towards him. "I know how you feel about this Rex, but..you must've realized how bad of an idea this had been."

He stood silent as he faced away from her, only the sound of him crossing his arms and what seemed to him hugging himself filled the room.

"..maybe you could even come with me?" She continued to look up at him, and that in response made him speak.

"Paisley, I can't just leave my career like that. We've been working on this for so long—if you even remember, you've—…we've been wanting to do this since middle school!" He started ranting, and turned to face her.

"And now that we have that, you're willing to just..abandon it? This is all happening so fast, did you even think this through?—" He got cut off by Paisley pointing at him and yelling.

"I know exactly what I'm doing Rex! You can't just assume I rush into everything without thinking."

"..I'm sorry Paisley. I just feel like you didn't care as much as I did about everything if you're willing to leave just like this."

That made Paisley's expression go blank. Her hands dropped to her side, curling up into fists as she grabbed the fabric of her skirt. "..I see." She went towards her desk to grab stuff and fill the empty box. Rex had realized then how much those words affected her. The immediate guilt filled up his body. He glanced down at the ground.

"..you don't have to stand there. If you really feel that way, then you should leave." He snapped his head up as he heard her voice, trying to reason with her.

"Look, that's not what I was trying to say-"

"Get out. That's an order Rex."

Paisley's voice was almost harsh as she slammed a pen holder down onto the desk. The man's shoulders dropped, frowning as his eyebrows furrowed. He went to leave the building, putting his hand on the doorknob.

"..okay then. Seems like you're willing to abandon more then just your company. Goodbye Miss Paver." At that, he left the office, leaving Paisley alone.

She let out a breath she didn't even know she had been holding in. She laid her face in her hands, trying not to shed a single tear over this. "What's the point of even crying anyways?" She continued to pack her stuff into the box.

"..it's fine." She reassured herself, grabbing the last of what she needed. "He'll come around." She grabbed the box, wrapping her arms around it as she replayed the entire convo from before in her head.
