Work Text:
Dean used to hear a simple song - until Castiel came along. Now in its place is something new, and Dean heard it every time he looked at Cas.
Him and Cas have been together for two whole years now. Their relationship was a blessing, but that didn’t mean it was perfect - far from it, to be frank. Dean was still a hunter, and Cas was along for the ride and is considered a hunter as well. And with Jack in the picture now, they had a kid to look out for and considered him theirs.
With simple songs, Dean wanted more. Perfection was so quick to bore. Cas was more beautiful by far, and their flaws made them who they really are. Why not expand on that?
Dean thought about what he always wanted - a family of his own. He’s technically already got it - sure - but he wants more.
So when Dean drove himself, Sam, Jack, and Cas back to the bunker after a hunt and Sam and Jack retreated to their respective bedrooms, Dean stopped Cas. “Hey, can we talk?” questioned the hunter, a pleading look in his eyes. Cas nodded fervently, allowing Dean to guide him towards the library. “What’s on your mind, Dean?” The angel inquired, reaching and taking Dean’s hand in his.
Dean freezes at the contact, suddenly becoming anxious. How was he supposed to broach this? Not only that, but will Cas be open to his ideas?
Dean swallows and speaks, “I just uhh…I just want to know if there was something you wanted umm…More of. You know, from me? Or maybe out of us?” Dean then points between them, an anxious but questioning expression on his face. Cas tilts his head to the side in confusion like he always does, squinting his eyes at his lover to decipher his question. “I’m not sure what you mean,” Cas answers.
Dean huffs out a frustrated sigh. Not at Cas, obviously; more so the fact he cannot seem to convey what he truly wants. “I mean, I’ve just been thinking a lot about us lately,” Dean states, nodding slowly. Cas nods back, waiting for Dean to continue. Dean clears his throat awkwardly. “What I mean by that is…Maybe we can retire, you know, from hunting,” suggested Dean.
Cas’s eyebrows fly up, shocked by Dean’s statement. It was silent between the two for a few moments, until Cas finally spoke. “You want to quit hunting?” The angel remarks quizzically, staring intently at his lover’s facial expression. When he sees no hint of deceit, he deflates. “Hunting has been your life, Dean. It’s all you’ve ever known.” Cas examines, taking both of Dean’s hands in his.
Dean nods, “Yeah, I know. But, I’m not getting any younger and I want more time with you, Cas.” He then squeezes Cas’s hand to reiterate his statement. “Besides, why not live together in peace?” He adds, still maintaining his grip on his lover’s hands. Castiel squeezes back. “That…That does sound nice,” He states. Dean and Cas stare into each other’s eyes, not saying a word. They don’t need to.
Cas used to hear a simple song - until Dean came along. Cas took Dean’s broken melody and turned it into a symphony. Now, Dean was suggesting something new. A life where their lives wouldn’t constantly be hanging in the balance - a life of peace.
Dean stands up straighter, a small blush dusting his cheeks. “Cas, let’s get married,” He declares, squeezing Cas’s hand even more. Cas’s eyes widen in surprise, and then he watches Dean let go of his hands and pull out a small box from his jeans’ pocket. He flips it open to reveal a simple yet elegant gold ring sitting in a small pillow, and he presents it to Castiel.
Cas looks down at the ring, then back up at Dean. “Really?” He whispers in disbelief. Dean sheepishly shrugs, a shy smile on his face. “Well, yeah! I don’t see myself with anyone else.” The hunter replies, gesturing to the ring.
The angel smiles, “I will gladly take your hand in marriage,” At that, Dean’s smile grows wider and he takes the ring and slips it onto Cas’s left ring finger. The two join hands again, staring into each other’s eyes.
“I love you,” murmured the angel. “I love you too,” the hunter replies, and then they seal their love with a tender kiss.
