Work Text:
You never had a great relationship with your family, but you coming out was the final straw for them. Admitting that you liked men was the breaking point for your parents, so they basically kicked you out of the house and told you to never come back. You obliged, leaving and taking a train to New York City where you currently lived. The apartment you had lived in was small, but through thrift shopping and Craigslist, you had made it home.
You made your way through the rest of college, paying for it yourself through any means necessary. You graduated with a Biomedical Engineering degree, which allowed you to earn an internship with Stark Technologies. That’s where you met your boyfriend of 6 months, Loki Laufeyson. The two of you knew each other for about a year before you actually started dating, spending hours and hours together. You were attached at the hip, an unstoppable duo. You had even worked your way up to becoming Tony’s assistant, meaning you were allowed to move into the Avenger’s compound with everyone else. Shortly after that is when you and Loki started dating.
Right when you got your internship, your parents decided to reach out to you. Something about “rebuilding the relationship between the three of you,” your mother claimed. Every conversation with them was filled with “you’ve never actually been with a guy, how do you know you like them?”, or “you just need to find the right woman, then you’ll be happy”...they had no idea about Loki. And truth be told, you still had yet to talk to Loki about how awful these people were.
Your parents had moved closer to New York shortly after they learned that you had moved there. You would go to their house for lunch occasionally, and typically it was easy to handle. Their words didn’t hurt you as much as they used to. This time, though, was completely different. Their words cut through you like daggers. They called you a sin, they called you dirty, they called you awful and horrible things. You had left their house in a rush, speeding back to the compound and not speaking to anyone when you came in.
The door of your bedroom closed with a heavy slam, rattling your head more than it already had been. Your breathing was labored, your hands shaking as you let your jacket slip off your body and onto the floor. People had been bombarding you with questions from the minute you walked in, but you were too shaken up to focus on any of them. You kicked your converse off and let them fly across the room, hitting the wall with a loud smack. Standing in the middle of the room, you tried your hardest to calm your breathing. Hot tears streamed down your face, a choking sound coming out every time you tried to speak.
You were so focused that you didn’t even hear Loki enter the room, a worried look immediately falling across his features.
“Darling?” He spoke quietly, letting the door shut softly behind him. Your head turned to look at him, tears still falling down your cheeks. Loki’s face fell, walking up to you and wrapping his arms tightly around you. “My love, what happened? Did someone hurt you?!” He said quietly, his hands running through your hair as he held you. You couldn’t respond, sobs shaking your chest as you clung to him. It took a few more minutes for you to calm down before you were able to speak, sitting down on the bed next to Loki.
“Darling, did someone hurt you? Are you injured?” Loki asked, scanning your body for injuries. “No, Lo, I’m okay,” You said, sniffling slightly. “I...um,” Loki’s brow furrowed as he looked at you, waiting for you to continue. “My parents are...not good people. They kicked me out when I came out to them,” You began. “That’s how I ended up in New York. I made my own way through college, graduated, and got my internship with Tony. Right after I got it was when my parents reached out to me. They wanted to re-connect. They had moved closer to New York after they found out that I ended up here,” Your voice cracked slightly towards the end.
“I go over to their house occasionally. That’s what I did today. They normally don’t have an effect on me, the things they said stopped bothering me a while ago...but today, god, they were bad today. Their words hit me like a fucking freight train. It was one shot after another, I mean, fuck,” You laughed, wiping your eyes. “I couldn’t take it. I left as soon as possible. They were just awful…” Loki listened intently, watching your face carefully.
“My love...why didn’t you tell me about them sooner?” He asked.
“I thought I could handle them.” You responded, looking up at him.
Loki shook his head, standing up. “How dare they hurt you like this? They can’t even accept their own god damn son! This is fucking ridiculous! Give me the word, Y/N, I swear, and I will go and make sure they regret every single fucking thing they said. Foolish humans,’ He said, kneeling down in front of you. “I promise you, they will never hurt you again, darling. Ever. I will stand by your side no matter what. I swear by it.” He promised, holding your hands in his larger ones.
You laughed gently, nodding your head. “Thank you, Lo,” You said. “Now...can I have some comforting cuddles, please? I don’t want to do anything else today.” Loki eagerly climbed into bed, kicking his own shoes off. He opened his arms and you laid down, letting him spoon you tightly. The two of you stayed like that the rest of the day, Loki’s strong arms holding you, a physical promise that he would never allow anyone to harm you. No matter what.
