A precious melody

Summary:

In the middle of the night, a little pumpkin was wide awake, being unable to sleep. He tried, and tried, but his eyes never seemed to completely close.

His mind starts to wonder that of the days when he didn’t have trouble sleeping.

They were filled with a tune that always soothed him, sung by those he cherished the most. It was a simple lullaby for their precious child.

A melody forever engraved in his mind.

Work Text:

“Goodnight Gourdy,” Ribecca had said to him before closing his bedroom door, her figure dissapearing from his view as the door  creaked slightly before a click was heard.

That was a few hours ago.

Now, the little pumpkin was still awake. He knew it was bad to be up after bedtime in Gardenview, but his eyes thought otherwise.

He had tried everything to go to sleep, from rearranging his pillows and plushies to laying in different positions in his bed. Although, none of them really worked.

From time to time, he would accidentally find his eyes closing, and his brain would take it as a sign that he wanted to be awake. He was irritated that his mind did the opposite of what he wanted. It was unfair.

After staring at the ceiling for who knows how long, Gourdy decided to take his plushies and put them ALL on his bed. Atleast he’d have company in his quest for sleep.

He arranged them one by one, placing each plush around the part of the bed where he wanted to lie down. It didn’t take him long before he finally finished. His stuffed toys made it look like he was doing a cult ritual on his bed- or something like that.

After admiring his hard work, Gourdy rested right in the middle, in between all of his plushies. All the toys around him made it look like he was in plush heaven!

Although, he felt something was missing. All his important things were with him, what else could’ve he forgotten?

He stared at his drawer beside his bed, there was a lit up lamp on top of it, nothing else to note. Then he looked at his bed, there were only his pillows, plushies and his blanket. Nothing clicked.

But then he looked at the wall, some drawings he had made were hung up there for “memories” or as a reminder of all his friends in Gardenview he had drawn, Eclipse was the one who recommended him doing it.

The thought of his friends were nice, a comforting one in his current situation, but then, a forgotten memory resurfaced.

Mama and Papa…

His parents. He’d drawn- or atleast try to draw them countless times. None of them looked right because he forgot their most important features, their faces.

Gourdy didn’t know when, or how he forgot them, after “the accident” in Gardenview, things just started to blur, and somehow, it happened.

He didn’t mean to forget them, but his thoughts blamed himself for not remembering such an important detail. If he could go back in time, he would apologise to his parents for forgetting.

Just thinking about them made him sad. He thought about all the times when they were together, like when his parents usually played with him when Toodles was busy. Or those times where they would go on walks with each other around Gardenview, they also gave him really warm and long hugs!

He missed them.

He missed their warmth, their embrace, their voices, everything. But nothing could bring them back, and he knew so.

Thinking back, he never had trouble sleeping when they were still around.

It was weird, it’s not like he had nightmares or anything, so why couldn’t he go to sleep?

“Gourdy sweetie,” a familiar voice said in his head.

“want Mama to sing you a lullaby?” it was a question he’d heard multiple times before.

“Honey!! I can sing too you know…” the other voiced sulked.

“Fine, fine, how about we sing together?” she said trying to console the other person.

“That way, our little pumpkin here can hear just how well we sing”

“Yeah, yeah!” it was… his own voice?

“I wanna hear Mama and Papa sing!” Gourdy didn’t remember this happening.

“Of course buddy,” the other voice said.

“anything for you.”

“Buy first!” the male voice abruptly shouted out.

“Lay in bed and close your eyes,” she said in a sweet tone.

“Okay Mama!” he replied back to them. He wondered if had forgotten this memory too.

Suddenly a soothing melody filled his ears, it was the people in his memory singing.

Hush, my child… The female voice started,

Drift into slumber

In your dreams, you’ll run and play

In paradise~

Hush, my child… The male voice continued,

Gentle now, go to sleep

And somewhere in that moment

The lonely moon will dream~

Their voices were soft, something about them held a hint of familiarity, but Gourdy couldn’t place what it was.

A silent, icy gaze

Falls upon us

Like a fragile need

Trembling in fear

The gentle wind sways and dances

As breath sinks deep

With quiet longing

And without a word

You’ll embrace

The sea that sings~

Gourdy never really knew the next line to the lullaby. He always fell asleep before he could hear it.

A shame his flashback came to an end, but atleast for now, he didn’t need to worry about sleeping.
