Chapter Text
|| KATNISS POV ||
*knock knock* two sharp knocks echo in the distance of my haze. Like a blur at the back of ur brain that you can’t quite place. I heard the patter of almost silent footsteps approaching though they feel so distant.
“Katniss?” A voice mumbles almost inaudible in the back of my head. “Katniss!” This time it was sharper but my body still didn’t react. My eyes finally place the dull face of a survivor of the hunger games in-front of me.
“Haymitch..” I mumble, “is it dinner?” I ask. Though I am fully awake I feel like I’m in a drowsy of unconsciousness. Straining with effort to focus on sound and vision.
“No.. it’s Peeta.” Haymitch says.
Somehow that made the effort refrain. The unconscious feeling pulls away a tad at the mention of his name. Peeta.. Still himself.. But not my Peeta.. I never did find out what happened to him after the explosion.
I’m able to lift my head slightly and focus on Haymitch’s face. For the first time in what.. 2 months? Three?? That I’d taken in a human face. It feels like I’ve came back from the dead.
“Peeta.” My voice cracks. It was the first time I’d actually talked and not silently mumbled since.. since… since I started waiting…
“They found out how to fully cure him.. He’s entirely back to pre-rebellion Peeta.” Haymitch says with a choke.
“So..” I say not finishing my sentence. Though it was all Haymitch needed, it was like he knew what I wanted to ask.
“No. Not his memories being altered back. He remembers EVERYTHING. Yes even being hijacked.” Haymitch says.
A salty taste fills my mouth I only then realise the tears falling from my eyes.
“He’s come back to 12.. He’s here now waiting outsi-,” before Haymitch can finish I’ve up and left the seat I’ve sat in everyday and night other than quick toilet breaks for the past few months. I stumble into the walls too many times to count but I don’t care. I swing open the front door and see Peeta. Standing across the road inspecting some plants.
Peeta realises my presence and stands up his mouth gaped open.
