Of Beasts and Puffballs

Summary:

Kirby and the Forgotten Land is an incredible game, but it leaves much to be desired, especially in terms of characterization of Elfilin, and build-up to the classic Kirby trope of a terrifying final boss.

Let's fix that, shall we?

Chapter 1: Prelude to Adventure

Chapter Text

It's another beautiful day in Dreamland!

Kirby stretches their stubby little arms as he happily trots out of his house. The sun is shining, the sky is free of clouds, and nothing is happening! Good. He needed a break after that last adventure. Whew, that’d been… “very stressful” was probably an understatement.

But! That was months ago. Most of the Star Allies had gone back to doing their own things by now, the puffball recalling what each of them was doing last he saw them.

Magolor was running Merry Magoland and working with Susie to create a teleporter system to connect planets together. Adeline and Ribbon had gone back to Ripple Star after a month or so of making sure everything was alright. Dark Meta Knight had left for the Mirror Dimension after about a week, though everyone had gotten the feeling he had wanted to leave sooner. Taranza had returned to Floralia not long after Adeline and Ribbon went home, both to make sure nothing was happening with the Dimension Mirror, and, though he didn't say this to anyone, to avoid an awkward conversation with Dedede about… really, their whole incident in general. Daroach was off treasure hunting with the Squeaks somewhere in Popstar. The Mage Sisters and Hyness returned to wherever they called home, Jambastion in tow.

Meanwhile, the “Dreamland Four,” as most had come to call them, were just going about their lives. Meta Knight was finalizing repairs on the Halberd(again), King Dedede had just about finished cleanup efforts from the Jamba Heart Crisis, aided by Kirby and Bandana Dee.

Life was good. Cheerfully waving to passing Waddle Dees, feeling the gentle breeze on his face and the warm sun on their body, it was difficult to imagine this day going wrong, so Kirby went about with a smile on his face.

Eventually, Kirby summons and hops on a Warp Star, flying off. Where? He doesn't know, nor does he really care! Oh! He’ll go to Green Greens and grab some apples for Bandee. He knows they like the apples from there, and it wasn't a far flight by Warp Star-though they supposed that was true of pretty much every place on Popstar.

The trip is quickly interrupted, however, by the sudden gathering of a gargantuan, grey cloud. Kirby is confused, and extremely worried. There weren't any clouds in the sky a moment ago… is it Kracko, back for round… however many times they've gone at it? No, even Kracko never made storms this large, so-

He gets his answer when a tear is made in those clouds, bright, shining blue, and in the shape of a star. Not long after, everything is getting sucked in!

As Waddle Dees, trees, and everything in between is pulled into the massive rift, Kirby starts piloting the Warp Star away. He's gotta go get someone to help, or just not get sucked in himself!

… why is the Warp Star slowing down?

Somehow, the pull quickly overpowers even the power of a Warp Star, and, letting out a wail of alarm, Kirby is pulled into the vortex with everyone else.

Notes:

So. I like Kirby and the Forgotten Land. It's one of my favorite games of all time, and it was my introduction to the series as a whole, but wow, does the plot do just about nothing until basically the end of the game. It doesn't do Elfilin any favors, either, I wouldn't be surprised if some people forgot he existed up until he got kidnapped.

This frustrated me so much, I decided to write an entire fanfiction rewriting the plot! No upload schedule, just gonna be doing this by whenever I think I have enough of a buffer to post something. This is my first time seriously writing a fanfic, so feedback would be greatly appreciated!
