“Oh, dear me! Wherever could my little Blueberry Sugar Cookie have gone?” Pure Vanilla chuckled, pretending to not notice the little boy hiding behind the curtains.
The boy giggled, loudly, not knowing that his father could hear him.
“I wonder if he’s… behind the couch?” Pure Vanilla peeked behind the couch. “No… So where is he?”
Shadow Milk laughed as he read his book. “He must have gotten really good at hiding while he was with White Lily, huh?”
“Oh, that must be why I can’t find him!” Pure Vanilla sighed. “And here I was, going to bake his favorite dinner. But if he’s not here then I guess not…”
Blueberry Sugar burst out from behind the curtains and clung to Pure Vanilla. “Noooo! Mama, no! I’m here!”
“Oh, there’s my boy!” Pure Vanilla scooped him into his arms. “It’s bathtime now.”
Blueberry Sugar, realizing he had been tricked, whined and writhed in his arms. “Noooooo! No bath! No!”
Shadow Milk chuckled. “Listen to your mama. You need a bath, you’re covered in dirt.”
Blueberry Sugar looked down at his very dirty clothes and shoes. “. . . No I’m not!”
“Nope,” Pure Vanilla dragged the boy to the bathroom.
Shadow Milk cackled at the sight, Blueberry Sugar flailing about while Pure Vanilla carted him off to a simple bath. Toddlers really were dramatic.
It took half an hour to get Blueberry Sugar clean, but once he was dry and out of the bath, he was calmer.
Shadow Milk had the boy in his lap, reading a book at the kitchen table while the boy watched and babbled to him.
Pure Vanilla was making lunch for the three of them, occasionally pausing to watch his husband and son together.
It’d been… hard, at first. Blueberry Sugar’s birth had been long, very painful, and Pure Vanilla had broken Shadow Milk’s hand squeezing it.
But their baby boy was so adorable, he didn’t even cry, just watched everything quietly.
He was very colicky when he was a baby, always waking up his poor dads. Shadow Milk took over dealing with him at night so poor Nilly could get some rest and heal.
Now, their baby boy was just the sweetest little boy ever. Always sticking close to one of his parents, so talkative, and so bright. He was barely 4 and already learning to read books without pictures!
Blueberry Sugar’s head started drooping, and he leaned back against Shadow Milk, who chuckled and rubbed the boy’s back with his free hand.
Pure Vanilla set the plates of food down on the table, sitting next to Shadow Milk and running a hand through Blueberry Sugar’s hair.
“Mm… Mama…” Blueberry Sugar looked up at Pure Vanilla.
“Hey, buddy, you gotta eat first, then nap, okay?” Pure Vanilla handed the boy a sandwich. “A couple bites, then you can go to bed.”
Blueberry Sugar nodded and took a couple bites of his sandwich, and Shadow Milk ruffled his hair while he did so.
The three of them finished lunch before Blueberry Sugar asked for bedtime. Shadow Milk had carried the boy off to his bed and come back to cuddle with Pure Vanilla in their room.
Pure Vanilla held Shadow Milk for a while, the other’s head resting on his stomach and purring.
“We should have another,” Shadow Milk murmured. “Think about it.”
“I think we should,” Pure Vanilla tucked a lock of Shadow Milk’s hair behind his ear. “Later. One is more than enough for us right now.”
“Definitely.”
