A door opened, and Kitty heard it but chose not to move. She felt a cold hand on her shoulder and looked back.
“Good morning,” Owain spoke through the armor. Kitty responded with a yawn. “Time to get up, we need to make a stop before training.” Kitty rolled over as he turned away to leave the room, stopping and turning back when he heard a thump. Kitty had fallen off the bed.
-
“How late were you up last night?” Owain asked, curious since Kitty had been yawning nonstop since she woke up.
“I don't re-,” she stopped mid-sentence, yawning yet again before continuing, “remember.”
The knight sighed, continuing his way across the bridge and into the red kingdom territory. Nom and Owain were talking the day before and he had suggested they train with the weakness potion effect, hoping it would help them gain some resistance to it for future battles. So now, Owain and kitty were on their way to the best and most efficient potion maker they knew.
He knocked on the door to the tower, waiting patiently for it to open. Slowly, the door creaked open and cam peeked through the gap, seeing who was at the door he opened it fully with a greeting smile.
“Can we-” “One second, I packed them up for you.” Kitty looked up at Owain, a little confused. Usually, he'd be perfectly okay and welcome others into his home; today must be different. Cam came back down the stairs, a tied bundle in his hands. He handed it to Owain, quickly going to close his door.
“Hey, wait!” Owain put his foot in the door, stopping it from closing. “Are you okay? You seem in a bit of a rush,” Cam gulped, avoiding eye contact and looking over his shoulder at the stairs.
“I-im fine, just wanna get back to bed.”
Owain looked at Kitty, and she shrugged. He sighed and moved his foot. Cam smiled at him before closing the door.
“I smell the necromancer-” “we best be going.”
-
On the way back to the blue kingdom, Kitty began to grow curious. “This one's a different color, oh, this one too!”
Kitty picked one of the odd-colored potions up, recognizing the smell.
Owain heard the bundle drop to the ground, the splash potions breaking. The mix of the weakness potions and the mysterious one made his head spin. He blinked a few times. The last thing he saw was kitty laying on the ground unconscious.
When he finally woke up again, he felt…lighter.
‘Someone must have found us,’ he thought, noticing the plush material he was lying on. He put a hand to his head, feeling…soft? Did they take his helmet?
“You're awake!”
Owain looked over to the voice, recognizing it as Kitty's, to see a…cat.
“Am I going crazy, or did that cat just talk?”
The cat let out a giggle before speaking again. “Of course, silly, you're one too!”
What.
Owain quickly tried to stand on his feet, only to look down and see two, no, four large orange and white fluffy paws.
-
From the throne room, the group outside could hear one of the cats begin to cry out.
“Didn't know cats could be so vocal.” Nom chuckled, listening as the cats cry echoes through the castle.
“Alright lets go over this one last time.” Graecie began, pacing back and forth as she spoke. “Owain and Kitty left early this morning for the red kingdom to go pick up some potions for training. Cam confirmed they got the potions and made it to the bridge at least. We found the bag of potions and two cats unconscious on the bridge, and now one of them is screaming his heart out. That's everything, right?”
The group nodded; that was, in fact, the story they knew so far.
“Do we think Cam gave them the wrong potion and it turned them into cats?” Scott spoke up, saying what everyone was thinking. It was absolutely a possibility that he mixed up some similarly colored potions and was just in a rush to give them to the knight (now cat).
As if on queue, the two cats rushed into the room and stopped in front of the group. The larger, much fluffier one began meowing as if his life depended on it.
Shan, seeing how distressed the feline was, carefully picked him up and began scratching under his chin.
-
“That seemed to quiet you.” Kitty sat at Shans' feet, looking up at Owain as if he was pet. “It feels nice. Wait, stop distracting me-we need to go find Cam and get him to fix this!” Owain shook his head, pushing Shandrea's hand away and jumping out of her arms and running towards the open doors to the outside. He made it halfway before he was scooped up again; Nom had picked him up to stop him from leaving.
“Just because you're a big kitty doesn't mean you can still call the shots; you're going to stay here while I go find Cam and get him to fix this,” he set Owain down next to Kitty, expecting him to sulk and sit there.
“Come on! Im a professional escape artist!” kitty stood up, walking over to nom and rubbing against his leg before flopping onto her back as if asking for pets.
“See now this is adorable-OW” right as he went to pet her belly, she grabbed his hand with all four clawed paws and bit him. He pulled his hand away, and she quickly ran out of the castle, looking back to see a stunned owain and nom running after her.
Owain looked back at the rest of the group and meowed a bye before running after his fellow feline.
Nom crouched down to grab kitty, falling over on his face when something pushed him over. He looked up and saw Owain. He flicked his tail before running after kitty.
“See! You're a natural! Now, where to first? Find Cam now and get him to turn us back…?” Owain was about to agree without hesitation, but stopped. Kitty was finally…a kitty, after so long of not being able to live like this.
“How about you teach me how to be a cat. The same way I taught you how to be a knight.” kitty stoped for a moment, shocked he'd say such a thing, but also excited he said it.
“Yes! Oh absolutely! Uh, come on this way!” Owain smiled as he followed her, wondering how this would go.
As the day passed, the blue kingdom tried to get in touch with cam but he had just disappeared entirely. Not that kitty and Owain minded, they were running around and learning to catch mice, find the best napping spots, climb trees, and just be a cat in general. It was fun, sweet, and a bonding time for the two of them.
The two were sitting on a cliff, overlooking a field, with a perfect view of the sunset. Kitty was sitting in a comfortable loaf up against Owain, their purring basically in sync. A rustle in the leaves behind them spooked the two, both getting up in a fighting position as a brown tabby cat came through, a solid black cat rolling out of the bush after.
Kitty hissed at the newcomers, her fur puffed as she got closer.
“W-WAIT WE AREN'T GONNA HURT YOU”
The tabby yelled, terrified.
“wait…CAM?”
Owain pushed past Kitty, examining the two.
“Owain? Wait, is that kitty!?”
The four exchanged confused glances.
“How-and who is this!?”
“I went to bed human, and now I'm a cat.”
“SAUSAGE????”
-
Once the confusion wore off, Cam began to explain what had happened and why they were all cats.
Apparently, he was super tired yesterday from helping the knights train for the day and running back and forth for Sir Bek, that hed forgotten about the potions. He began making them at the last minute, and before he knew it, he added a random ingredient, which made the second batch turn a mix of pink and purple.
“I must've accidentally added one of them to the bundle I gave you…I will admit not even five minutes after you left I was carrying the other two to dispose of them and one fell, broke, and now we’re here.”
Owain huffed, he was glad to know what happened but now they need to know how to be turned back.
“Do you know how to turn us back?” kittys fur by now had relaxed, but worry filled her. She was fine being a cat forever again, her friends on the other hand wouldn't be able to adjust so easily.
“It should just wear off, the time limit is unknown to me though.”
Right as cam stopped speaking the four hada wave of pain wash over them, a few moments later they opened their eyes to see…they were human again!
Owain sighed in relief, glad to be back in his human body. “It's been a while since I saw that face,” he looked up, realizing he could feel the breeze on his face.
Where was his helmet!?
“It must’ve fallen off when we passed out.”
Cam chuckled, mentioning how he and Sausage needed to return to the kingdom and explained where they had disappeared all day.
“Why dont you ever show your face?” Kitty quietly asked, not making an effort to move from the grass.
“It's…a choice of mine. That's it. Now come on, we need-” “you should leave the helmet off more, I like your face.”
Owain looked back at her, a bit of shock in his eyes.
“Thank you…now let's get going.”
