Work Text:

Her footsteps on the gravel path sounded loud in the graveyard. The rain had been relentless for weeks, matching her mood. She tightened her outer robes and took out her wand. The rounded handle and the sudden rush of magic felt reassuring. Comforting. She cast another warming charm. Minerva could easily have cast a charm keeping herself dry, but her pointy witches hat took the most of it anyway.

A rumple of distant thunder sounded as she came to stop in front of his gravestone.

Severus Snape.

Her breath caught. The pain of loosing her friend was still overwhelming at times. Even six months later. Having a portrait of him hanging in the headmistress office was both a blessing and curse.

She got to witness his drawling voice, snarky comments and a dry sense of humour on a daily basis. By Godric, she missed the real him. A sharp stab of pain in her heart made her squeeze her eyes shut. She forced herself to take deep breaths.

Minerva bent down and picked up a small twig. She transfigured it to a single white lily and laid it on top of his grave.

“I’m so sorry.”

Her voice trembled. Tears started to run down her cheeks. This was why she was here. She needed to let herself grieve.

“I should never have believed that you betrayed us, betrayed me. You were my friend. I should have known there was a bigger picture. I was horrid to you the last year of your life and I am so, so sorry.”

The last word came out as a sob. Guilt. Hurt. Anger. Resentment. Pain. Her knees buckled and she let herself fall down to her knees in front his gravestone.

And here. Amongst weathered stones, in a slightly overgrown old wizarding graveyard, Minerva let herself grieve.

For the friend she lost.

For the regret she had.

For all that he gave.

For him.
