Catra had been a slayer since her high school years. She had battled vampires and other supernatural creatures to protect Bright Moon City. It was the one thing she and Adora bonded over. They were like sisters. Yet, there was a difference between them. Catra was falling in love with a vampire. Adora was dating a human girl named Scorpia D'Ream.
Catra paced back and forth in the graveyard one night. She and Adora were searching for vampires. The graveyard bordered the Whispering Forest. People didn't call the woods the 'Whispering Forest' for nothing. There were tons of urban legends and rumors surrounding it.
At some point, Catra and Adora split up. They patrolled different areas of the graveyard. Adora went into the mausoleum. Catra neared the boundary of the Whispering Forest. High in the sky, the full moon emitted a faint glow. Distant howls pierced the silence. She leaned against the tree, waiting for her girlfriend, Glimmer, to show up.
Glimmer was one of the few good vampires, which would make her an outcast. Her mother, Angella, was also a good vampire. Glimmer's father was a mortal man who used magic. Catra recalled her first meeting with Glimmer. They had been enemies at first. As time went on, she began to notice how different Glimmer was from other vampires.
It had surprised Catra to figure it out. Besides, she had grown accustomed to fighting dangerous vampires. Speaking of vampires, footsteps approached. Catra looked up, pushing her thoughts aside. Glimmer was pale in the moonlight, her raven hair cascading to her collarbone. Her eyes gleamed dusty pink. There was not a single blemish or imperfection on her smooth skin. She wore a pastel goth dress that reached her knees.
"Good evening," Glimmer said.
"Dressed up for something?" Catra asked. "I'm in my casual outfit and slayer gear."
"My mother had hosted a vampire ball. I wasn't interested in attending, so I left. I'd rather be fighting the bad vampires with you."
"I could see that, Sparkles. Anyway, you're beautiful."
Glimmer giggled. "Thanks."
If the short vampire wasn't, well, undead, she would be blushing. But she was incapable of such a human thing. It didn't mean she lacked emotions. Glimmer was still smiling at this point. Catra tucked a strand behind Glimmer's ear, mirroring the grin. They could go out together, but Glimmer wouldn't consume human food.
A hiss garnered the duo's attention, and they glanced in the direction of the sound. Several vampires advanced, baring fangs. Definitely the sinister ones. Catra lunged at them, holding up her stake. Glimmer could handle herself well due to vampiric strength. She helped Catra make short work of their foes.
Once they had vanquished their enemies, Catra and Glimmer sat on a log together. The sky was clear tonight, allowing for stars to be visible. Tiny pinpricks glittered in the inky blackness above the forest ceiling. Glimmer leaned against Catra. Her skin was cold to the touch, due to being a vampire.
"If my mom knew I was going out and fighting evil supernatural cratures with you, she'd freak out." Glimmer let out a soft chuckle. "I guess it's because she expects good vampires to stay away from the dangerous ones. She gets overprotective of me sometimes."
"Sounds like she worries a lot. Even if you're a decent fighter," Catra said.
"Yeah. She needs to understand that I'm not a child anymore."
"How does it sometimes feel, being a vampire?"
Glimmer held Catra's hand. "I'm pretty much immortal, which means I could outlive anyone who's not a vampire. I'd be remaining young while you become older. Sometimes I wish I wouldn't be a vampire. But then, I'd be giving up my strength."
Catra's thumb brushed Glimmer's knuckles. "So you'd stay a vampire, even if it means the temptation to drink blood?"
"Yeah. I try hard not to drink from humans. My mother's the same way, as is any good vampire. It gets difficult if we go without drinking for several days. By that point, any living being is fair game." Glimmer glanced up at Catra, making eye contact. "What is it like, being a mortal?"
"I have a heartbeat, and I could be outside during the day. When I first became a slayer, I had to work on my physical strength and fighting skills." Catra's phone beeped with a text from Adora, and she checked the message. "By the way, I need to get back to the graveyard. My friend needs help. Bunch of vampires over there, none of them nice at all."
Catra and Glimmer raced to the graveyard. They fought the vampires that surrounded Adora. By the time the battle ended, Catra helped Adora up. Adora glanced over at Glimmer.
"Is she a vampire?" Adora asked, turning her attention back to Catra.
"She is. But she's one of the good ones," Catra said.
Adora snorted. "What is it with you and non-human sapphics?"
Catra grinned. "I must be a magnet for them." She wrapped an arm around Glimmer's waist, pulling her into a side hug. "Glimmer and I have been dating for a while."
The following night, Catra wasn't patrolling another graveyard or abandoned house. She was in her apartment, watching a movie. It was when someone knocked the door. She had put away the dishes not too long ago. Who was visiting? Pushing the pause button on her remote controller, she shuffled to the door. As she gripped the door handle and pulled it open, she smiled. It was Glimmer, and the vampire was waiting in the hallway.
"You can come in," Catra said. "There's no garlic or anything."
"Alright," Glimmer said as she entered.
"It's not every night I'd invite a vampire inside. You seem to be the exception so far." Catra led Glimmer to the couch. "I was watching a movie, but I could pause it for the night."
The screen darkened the longer they chatted on the couch. Soon, Catra and Glimmer were cuddling. Catra was holding Glimmer in her arms, leaning against the pillow and armrest. Glimmer melted into Catra's embrace.
"You give the best hugs, you know that, right?" Glimmer said.
Catra smiled. "It's because you get to have those hugs."
For the rest of the night, they remained on the couch, relaxing. Catra fell asleep, arms still securing Glimmer in an embrace. She could only stay up for so long. In her slumber, she dreamed of going on moonlit strolls with Glimmer and dancing under the stars.
