Work Text:
Mizuki and Ena both felt it. How whenever they walked in the streets, holding hands, there were always people judging. How in their usual diner when they would get too close the waiter would look at them with disgust as they handed them the check, or the slurs people shouted. Its like they couldn't exist together without someone being upset about it.
Today was particularly bad. Ena was sitting in class with Mizuki, Mizuki was turned around to face Ena as they worked on an assignment together. They were laughing, talking and just looking at each other with so much love in their eyes. The assignment was practically third wheeling as it went unnoticed. Mid conversation, Mizuki was startled by a crumbled up sticky note hitting the desk.
She slowly picked it up, not knowing what it contained and started to unfold it. The word stared back at her as a group of boys started giggling next to her. Ena, curiously took the note and read it. Once she read it and realized it was written by the boys she was furious. She wanted so badly to march over there and give them a piece of her mind but Mizuki grabbed her hand and squeezed it.
"Calm down."
Mizuki's voice made Ena relax just a bit. But it wasn't fair! How could they say these things to Mizuki and her! Its not like their existence is harming anyone so why write such words with that much hatred? Ena got up and threw the note away. While walking back Ena shot the boys a death glare. But to her surprise, it did nothing! they started giggling more! At this point she felt crazy and just wanted to cry. Mizuki, sensing this comforted her until the class was over.
Mizuki was at lunch peacefully eating at her assigned lunch table (away from Ena) when some students directed their conversation to her.
"You're dating Shinonome right?"
Mizuki was a bit surprised by the question but answered truthfully.
"but you're both girls!"
Mizuki let out a confused expression before replying
"Yeah, no shit."
"You're both going to hell."
Mizuki looked at the classmate with a disgusted face.
"You know I'm right. You are both sinners and will forever be in hell."
Mizuki was about to start arguing when the bell rang and suddenly lunch was over.
"you lucky bitch"
Mizuki said, anger in her eyes.
Hell?! Mizuki pulled her necklace out her uniform shirt and started fidgeting with the cross as she walked. She really didnt believe in this kind of stuff, but her parents did. Her mom bought her the necklace to get her to at least try, however she did find herself interested. The question of where you go after you die has always been in the back of her mind.
She'd do anything to get into heaven.
She pulled out the chair from the desk and sat on it continuing to think while the class started. Are they really right? Will Mizuki just end up in hell?
Ena noticed Mizuki seemed off. She seemed more distant and wasnt cheerful like usual so she could tell something was off. unfortunately, she had to wait until free period to address it because they're just taking notes in this class and would 100% get caught passing notes.
Ena waited patiently and when the bell rang she quickly stood up and shoved her notebooks in her bag. She slinged her bag over her shoulder and walked over to Mizuki, who was still gathering her things.
"Hey, is something up?"
Mizuki looked at Ena and let out a soft smile.
"Just the sky."
Ena didn't look amused.
"No I'm being serious. You seem down."
Mizuki's expression changed and she let out a sigh.
"lets talk about this on the rooftop?
Ena nodded and took Mizuki's hand. They walked together trying to avoid the hall monitors and successfully made their way up. The door behind them shut and Mizuki started quickly speaking.
"weregoingtohellena."
Ena looked at her shocked and deeply confused.
"Mizuki what are you talking about?"
Mizuki's eyes started to fill with tears. She spoke quickly and stuttered over her words as she described what she was told. Ena looked at her in horror. Why would anyone say those things about her?
Mizuki kept going and going about how scared she was. How she was scared she'd be nothing but a sinner and god would never forgive her and all this bullshit that wasn't true.
"I-I mean maybe we should just..b-break up??..."
Ena's eyes wided with shock and her eyes started pooling with tears. She grabbed Mizuki and pulled her into a tight embrace.
"No! I-I.. why would you say that?!"
They both cried as Ena held on tighter.
"Please. I love you so much. More than you could ever imagine. Don't listen to what they say it's not true, it never will be."
Ena looked Mizuki in the eyes, she was a mess. Mascara running down her face, her face being red from crying but Ena couldn't help but think about how beautiful her girlfriend was.
Mizuki wiped her tears and looked deep into Ena's eyes. "I'm sorry. I don't wanna break up with you. It's just that I hate how people treat us Ena." Ena nodded. "I get that. I'm not a big fan of it either." They stared at each other before Mizuki spoke again.
"I just wanna be able to love you a-and hold your hand without us getting stared at!" Ena nodded again as she listened."I know. But who cares what other people think. They're just jealous." Ena said gently as she played with Mizuki's hair.
Ena pulled Mizuki closer, their faces close together and pressed their lips together. Mizuki fell into the kiss and they held onto each other until they ran out of breath. They broke the kiss and looked into each others eyes.
"I love you."
"I love you more."
They finally let go of each other and grabbed the other's hand. They walked toward the door and pushed it open. They went down the stairs giggling as they jumped into a conversation about their afternoon plans. Who cares what others think? They're always going to be together, no matter what.
