Blessing in frames

Summary:

Megumi never told his parents that he likes boys, and now he has to introduce Yuji to them not only as his boyfriend, but as his fiancé.

“Mom, dad, I have something I want to tell you.” With one last reassuring look from Yuji, Megumi told the truth. “Yuji and I, we are dating.”

“Actually, Megumi asked me to marry him before even asking me out and I said yes,” Yuji added and raised their intertwined hands with his engagement ring.

Megumi’s mom just stood there frozen from shock, covering her mouth. After few seconds, she started talking. “Oh, honey, I’m so happy for-“

Before she could finish the sentence, Toji slowly stood up from his seat and without a word, left the room.

Work Text:

“Megumi, it's okay. Just knock on the door,“ Yuji said calmly, reassuring the other for at least a fifth time that day.

The black-haired boy sighed and with a little peck on the cheek from Yuji, knocked.

Short after that, the door opened and showed Megumi's mom standing in them, wearing an apron she got from her husband. It was white with a print of this disgusting purple worm Megumi's mom found oddly cute.

“Hi, boys~. You are finally here,” she welcomed them, taking off that awful apron and hugged her son.

“Hello, mom. Sorry we are late.”

“It's fine, it’s fine. But next time use your keys, honey. The fact that you don’t live here anymore, doesn’t mean you are a stranger to this house,” she smiled and gently slapped Megumi on the cheek.

“And Yuji. I’m so glad to see you again,” she smiled even more and hugged Yuji so tight he couldn’t breathe. Megumi´s mom was surprisingly strong.

“It’s nice to see you too, Mrs. Fushiguro,” the pink-haired boy wheezed.

Megumi’s mom let him go and seemingly angry, crossed her arms on the chest. “I told you to call me by my name.”

Yuji blushed and scratched his neck. “Sorry,” he apologized embarrassed. He wasn’t comfortable with calling her some other way than “Mrs. Fushiguro”.

Megumi’s mom just laughed it off and slipped into the apartment. At that moment, Toji came to greet the guests.

“Son, Yuji, welcome,” the older man said with a deep voice and shook Itadori's hand.

“Hi, dad.”

“Come on in. Dinner is almost ready.” Megumi gulped. It’s here.

“So, Yuji, how are you?” Toji asked, hugging Yuji around the shoulders. “Megumi told us you adopted a cat with a weird name?”

***

All four of them were sitting around the table, eating dinner.

Megumi’s mom and dad were sitting on one side and their son and Yuji on the other. The atmosphere was cheerful, but Megumi was more and more nervous.

“I love working as a firefighter. Thanks to my strength,” Yuji said while flexing his arm muscles (Megumi blushed), “I get to save many people. But sometimes it’s difficult because of my brothers... Todo is a firefighter like me but, fortunately, he works in a different station. And Choso is a paramedic, so when there is a huge accident and all the rescue services are needed, they, instead of doing their jobs, are arguing about who is a better older brother,” Yuji said with annoyed face and rolled his eyes. But everyone knew he didn’t mean it - Yuji loved his brothers and they loved him.

“Yeah, brothers...” Toji muttered. His wife just caressed his shoulder with an understanding face and asked Yuji about his work some more. Megumi stopped listening and started worrying again.

He and Yuji were friends since high school. Of course, Itadori was the first one to start talking to him but from that day on, neither of them wanted to stop. Megumi fell in love at first sight. Yuji was one of his first close friends and even though their personalities were so different, they got along really well. Megumi kept his crush a secret for many years until one day he... screwed up. Or did he?

***

“Hey! I don’t understand why Sukuna is so touchy-friendly with you,” Yuji complained while caressing fresh scar on his hand. “He is never so nice to me. It’s like he has a crush on you,” Itadori said, angrily glaring at the giant cat on Megumi’s lap licking his paw, obviously uninterested in his owner.

“Well, at least someone is interested,” Megumi mumbled, stroking Sukuna’s pinkish fur.

“Sorry?”

“No, nothing. I was just talking to Sukuna.”

“Sure...” Yuji said, still killing the cat with his eyes. “So, say... Fushiguro.”

Megumi went sill. Yuji´s tone was rather serious and he didn’t usually call him by the last name.

“I was thinking... We know each other for so many years, and we actually never talked about, you- you know, crushes and stuff?” Now Yuji was red as a tomato. And Megumi too.

“Oh, yes, you are right,” Megumi answered flatly, hanging his head and burying his fingers more deeply into Sukuna´s fur. Where is Yuji going with this? “Do you… want to ask me something?” Please, say no.

Itadori passed his can of soda from one hand to another. He was really nervous. “Well...,” Yuji said and went quite. Fushiguro’s ears started ringing, mind completely blank. He loved Yuji for so many years. He dreamed of one day dating him and marrying him and living a happy life together... But he knew it was all just a foolish fantasy, so he never confessed. And to be honest, Megumi was scared of getting rejected. But maybe-

Yuji opened his mouth and blurted out: “Do you have a crush on someone?”

“Will you marry me?”

“What?!” Yuji said, surprised.

“What?!” Megumi said, shocked.

“Meow?!” Sukuna screeched, horror written all over his face.

The boys just sat there, looking at each other. Yuji with “What the f*ck just happened?” face and Megumi with “What the f*ck did I just say?” face. Neither of them found the courage to speak. Fushiguro was panicking. Why did I just ask Yuji to marry me?! Am I in love for so long I finally went crazy? Am I that stupid? I wanted to keep it a secret and THIS? This is too much... Okay. Okay. I need to leave. Right. NOW.

Megumi stood up, Sukuna jumping of his lap, both of them still trying to process this unbelievable situation. The black-haired boy couldn’t even look at his, now, ex-friend whose face was completely blank. He hates me. Megumi just turned around, aiming for the door, trying to leave the apartment as fast as he could. Then he heard Yuji’s voice quietly but clearly say: “Yes.”

“Come again?” Fushiguro quickly turned around.

Itadori stood up and walked towards Megumi, stopping right in front of him.

“I said yes. Yes, I will marry you.”

Sukuna fainted, Choso and Todo fell through the door because they were eavesdropping as always and Megumi never felt happier in his entire life.

“Oh, I will go get the desert. Just wait here,” Megumi’s mom said, bringing the black-haired boy back into reality.

Toji took advantage of the situation and slipped out with “Be right back. Just need to check some bets...”

The two boys were left alone at the table. Yuji took Megumi's arm and squeezed it, the engagement ring, he was trying to hide all evening, cold against his skin. “What are you thinking about, sweetheart?” he asked with a worried look.

Megumi was quiet for a while and then sighed. “About the day I confessed my crush to you,” his thumb gently rubbing Yuji’s hand.

Itadori laughed. “I wouldn’t call that ‘confessing a crush’.” Megumi smiled, his eyes still worried. “I didn’t even tell them I like guys, Yuji... They will be horrified.”

Yuji turned on the chair, facing his future husband, holding their hands together. “Megumi, we are in this together, remember?” Itadori said, gently kissing the black-haired boy´s ring. “Everything will work out just fine. And if not, I´m sure they will come around eventually. But I think your parents will be more than happy to accept us and welcome me into your family. They love me. Look,” he said, jerking his head toward the table, “your mom even cooked my favourite meal.” Megumi still didn´t seem convinced. “And they love you too. In every room of this apartment, there is at least one picture of you on the wall.”

And Yuji was right. Megumi looked around at the memories locked in frames. There were mostly photos of him and his mom because his dad was the one taking them. There was one from a hike in the mountains. Little Megumi with puffy eyes because he fell on the knees and his mom was treating the injury. He remembered his dad then took him on his shoulders and carried him for the rest of the trip. Or another one – Megumi when he got his dogs Kuro and Shiro. Picture of Toji holding him in his arms after he was born, Megumi being so little it looked almost funny in comparison to his dad. And many more. His favourite one was from their graduation day. Megumi and Yuji standing next to each other, Yuji hugging him with one hand from the left side, grinning from ear to ear, Megumi blushing like crazy. Megumi’s mom standing on the right, happy as well. And Toji standing behind them, his strong arms hugging them all and even though he would never admit it, he had tears in his eyes that day. Megumi swore there was a piece of Choso’s pointy hair sticking out of the photo´s corner.

Megumi looked back at his beloved. Yuji smiled softly and leaned his forehead against the other. “You are their blessing, Megumi. And mine too.” With a light kiss on the nose, Yuji sat back because the parents were returning. Toji obviously didn’t win. Again.

Megumi took a deep breath, squeezed Yuji’s arm under the table and after his father sat down, he said: “Mom, dad, I have something I want to tell you.” With one last reassuring look from Yuji, Megumi told the truth.

Megumi was too scared to even look up. He felt cold, head spinning, heart racing. Yuji was sitting quietly next to him, holding onto their connected hands.

Megumi’s mom reached out, but the black-haired boy just flinched and moved his other hand into the lap.

The silence was suffocating. Megumi knew it would be hard to come out. He was prepared for his parents to yell at him and kick them out. But this... When the situation actually occurred? It was too much and Megumi just wanted to leave and never come back.

Just when he was about to run away, his father showed up. Toji sat back at his seat and put something on the table. Megumi started to shake a little, almost crushing Yuji’s hand from how tight he was holding onto it.

“Son, please, look at this.”

Megumi was too scared to do so, but the tone of his father´s voice was surprisingly soothing. He looked up and saw the thing on the table.

It was a thin wooden box with a metal fastener on the side. Toji took it and carefully opened it like a book. Inside, on the left, there was a photo, the other side was empty.

“This is a photo of me and your mother from our wedding day,” Toji said, his voice suddenly filled with love. Megumi never saw that picture, but it was beautiful. His parents standing next to each other, his mom stunning in a gorgeous white dress, holding a bouquet. His dad in a black suit and tie, never looking prouder and happier.

Megumi looked up at his mom, confused. She just smiled calmly beckoning her husband to continue.

“We decided to make this that day, so that here,” Toji said, pointing at the empty part of the wooden frame “could be a photo from your wedding. Apparently, it will be with Yuji. We are looking forward to it. Right, honey?” Mrs. Fushiguro nodded.

Megumi let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding. His entire body eased up, and he felt tears dripping from his eyes. Yuji lightened up, immediately hugging his future husband tight. Megumi’s mom just smiled contentedly and Toji burst into laughter.

“So, you asked Yuji to marry you even before you started dating? You must have more guts than me, Megs!”
