Chapter Text
Sophia was busy. Like, really busy. Maybe she should’ve just followed her mom and gone into theatre arts—but no, she thought that would be too easy for her, already knowing everything about it. Instead, she loved making herself suffer, and right now she was having a blast reviewing for one of her finals this semester.
Sophia knew medicine wasn’t easy anyway. She had seen how her relatives would come home from 18-hour shifts—disheveled, exhausted, and stressed. Some of them didn’t even get paid well despite giving their all to help every stubborn, difficult patient they encountered.
Hell, it could be an Olympic sport. They honestly deserved a medal for dealing with all that for hours.
—
Daniela loved attention. Especially from Sophia. Ever since they got separated because their universities were “a million miles away from each other” (as Daniela would describe it), it had become harder to talk. Their schedules constantly conflicted.
One would be sleeping while the other had just woken up.
She missed Sophia. That was honestly an understatement. Being so far from the “love of your life” felt like literal torture.
She missed her goodbye kisses, her affectionate eye rolls whenever Daniela said something dumb, even the scent she left behind when she borrowed her clothes.
So… why not call her?
It was around 12:00 p.m., which meant it was 9:00 a.m. for Sophia. She was probably awake—Daniela knew her girlfriend had a fixed schedule and usually woke up early to jog or study.
She rolled over on the bed, reaching for her phone on the bedside table. She smiled at the wallpaper—it was the two of them at Venice Beach in LA, their hands intertwined as they watched the sunset. Cheesy, but cute.
She could still remember Sophia squealing every time Daniela splashed water at her.
Scrolling through her contacts, she found it: Mi amor, mi vida.
She hesitated for a moment, afraid to disturb her. The request felt… stupid. Asking for a kiss through a phone—missing it so badly she wished it were real instead.
Her finger trembled slightly before she pressed call.
—
It rang.
The sound echoed painfully in her room.
Her thoughts spiraled. Maybe she has no class today. Maybe she’s jogging. Maybe she’s studying and I’m interrupting her. Maybe—
“Hey, baby. What made you call?”
Her thoughts were cut off by that familiar voice, instantly softening her heart.
She could practically see Sophia’s smile through the phone, her voice slightly tired.
“Are you busy? I just wanted to ask something…” Daniela bit her lip, staring at the ceiling. This is so stupid.
Sophia suddenly turned on her camera. Books, an iPad, and a notebook came into view.
“I’m studying right now. Don’t worry, I got eight hours of sleep,” Sophia chuckled.
That alone sent an arrow straight through Daniela’s heart.
But Sophia was busy. Daniela had interrupted her. She sighed, closing her eyes. Maybe she should just ask another day.
“Hey… Dani? Are you there, baby?”
Daniela immediately sat up, coughing lightly. “Uh—yeah, I’m here…”
“Why’d you call?”
Sophia’s eyebrows furrowed slightly. Daniela stared at her—at her stupidly cute, nerdy glasses she always teased her about.
“Ugh… it’s stupid.” She groaned, embarrassed, feeling her face heat up.
“No. Tell me. I wanna hear your voice.”
Her heart started beating faster. Why was this so much harder than asking in person?
A second passed.
Then another.
“Can you… kiss me through the phone?” she blurted out. “Sorry, I just—I missed it. It’s weird, I know.”
She squeezed her eyes shut in frustration.
When she opened them again, Sophia was looking at her—then slowly smirked.
She lifted her phone… and kissed the screen.
Daniela froze.
She… actually did it.
“There. Do you want more? Or should I just fly there so you can have the real thing?” Sophia teased, though part of her clearly meant it.
Daniela, on the other end, was completely flustered. Her face grew redder by the second.
“Uh… yeah—I mean—you could, if you have time. I don’t wanna annoy you or anything…”
Sophia smiled, pulling the phone a little closer.
“You’re not annoying me. You’re giving me motivation,” she said softly. “And maybe after finals… I can visit you. Stay for a while.”
Daniela’s heart raced at the thought—Sophia back in her arms, those soft lips finally meeting hers again.
“And who knows,” Sophia added, her tone turning playful, “I think I could use you as my fake patient so I can study properly. We’re learning about muscles…”
She smirked.
“And I think you’d be the perfect model.”
The effect she had on her—Daniela was completely, hopelessly in a chokehold.
Daniela groaned, covering her face with a pillow.
“You’re so unfair…”
Sophia laughed softly. “Says the one who called just to ask for a kiss.”
"I miss you,” Daniela muttered, quieter this time. The teasing faded from Sophia’s expression.
"I miss you too.”
For a moment, neither of them spoke. Just the quiet comfort of being there.
"After finals,” Sophia whispered, “first thing I’m doing is finding you.”
Daniela smiled, eyes soft.
“You better.”
“And when I do…” Sophia leaned closer to the camera, “no more phone kisses.”
Daniela laughed, her chest feeling lighter than it had all week.
“Deal.”
