Dave's hands are sweating around the bakery box. He can feel the cardboard softening under his grip as he stands on the Smiths' porch now, he reminds himself. Beside him, Adrian bounces on his toes, grinning like this isn’t the most nerve-wracking moment of Dave's life. The door swings open before they can knock.
"Davey, right?" Eep’s voice is a bark of warm thunder as she leans against the doorframe, arms crossed over her broad chest. Streaks of silver flash in her braid, catching the Hawaiian sun. Her grin is all teeth. "Nice to finally meet the knave who stole my son’s heart."
Dave blinks. Knave?
Before he can process, Thunk’s massive frame fills the doorway behind her, two scruffy dogs weaving between his legs. "Sis, don’t scare him—oof!" His voice fades as he trips over a terrier, but he catches himself on the doorjamb and beams. "Hi! We heard you bake!"
Dave lifts the box like a sacrificial offering. "Brownies. Sort of." The edges are suspiciously blackened.
Sandy materializes beside Thunk, arms folded. She sniffs the air. "Burned."
Dave wilts.
Ade grabs his hand. "Dudes, he tried..."
Guy’s chuckle rumbles from inside the house. "Come in, Dave. Sandy's just teasing. Mostly."
Dave exhales. Maybe he’ll stick to the band.
