Work Text:
For the first time in a long time, Jungkook felt happy. He hummed a song quietly under his breath; it was something he'd heard for the first time earlier that day but didn't know the lyrics to it. Well, he actually couldn't even remember the name of the song and pretty much anything except for the tune of a particularly catchy chorus and some random 'yeah, yeah,no,no' bits most songs these days had. Normally it would have bugged him if he couldn't remember something but not today. He was too happy to care as he sat by the window of his favourite cafe shop, sipping his perfectly made americano and tapping away on his phone. It was the last day of his exams and it had gone fairly well (if you didn't count the part where the examiner had asked him his name and he had stuttered).
Jungkook was free to relax for at least a month now. He even glanced out of the window when he would normally have tried to avoid any sort of contact with any and all human beings in his vicinity. Besides, this was his favourite table for a reason; it was the table at the corner, obscured from the plain view of people passing by. No tantrum throwing children around him(not that children frequented cafes anyway), no reasons for the baristas to greet him as they walked around. It was a blessing. He could sit here all day, as the employees and other regular customers already knew him as the weird guy at the corner table by now. Well, he was just the guy at the corner table but the weird got added to the title after one of the female baristas had asked him out and he'd freaked and simply turned around and walked away. He still feels very guilty for doing it but he couldn't help it! It was probably better than saying something weird like I don't like how you smell, he seriously could have said it( don't blame him, blame his sensitive nose).
That or maybe because he liked to study at the cafe and you really do not want to see a sleep deprived 19 year old high on caffeine at 10o'clock at night. He probably looked like a mad man, typing away furiously on his laptop with bags under his eyes as he worked on assignments that he'd put off doing earlier. He usually ended up procrastinating till the very last minute.
Well, blame his parents for passing him their recessive awkward genes. They were pretty normal but Jungkook just had to turn out this way. Emotionally constipated and incapable of carrying out a proper conversation without stuttering or saying something he didn't mean to. Its not like he couldn't talk, he just usually ended up saying things that he would regret later. Especially when he was speaking to strangers. Also blame his parents for making him look attractive because as soon as he'd grown out of his pimply teenager phase, he'd started to get a lot of attention from people, and let's just say he wasn't great at dealing with it.
"Hey kid. Exams over?"
"What-oh Hyung. Yeah." It was Yoongi, his regular barista. The man had served him the first time he'd come to the cafe and when Jungkook had finally stuttered out an order, Yoongi had looked so done with him that Jungkook wanted to dig himself a hole and crawl into it. The cafe would be a nice place for him to rest in peace, the smell of coffee soothing his weary soul as it made its way into the afterlife. Jungkook was ready to never come back to the place again but the coffee that was served to him had been so perfect that he just had to come back. Besides, going to a new place would require him to speak to someone new again and that was just too stressful. Yoongi warmed up to him eventually, randomly threatening him to cut off his coffee supply if he didn't go out more and did something with himself.
Yoongi, Jungkook decided, was mostly harmless, even if he did curse a little too much and glared daggers at him all the time. Their relationship had progressed over time and Jungkook had come to the sad realization that Yoongi was his only friend. It had finally come to the point when Jungkook had become familiar enough to joke around with his Hyung and Yoongi to glare at Jungkook 24×7 but Jungkook understood the fondness and protectiveness that Yoongi hid behind his tough exterior (Yoongi had gotten the girl who had asked Jungkook out fired, his reason being something akin to unprofessional behavior or something. But he actually did it because Jungkook refused to show up at the coffee shop after the incident but he'll never tell you that. Besides, he didn't like that girl anyway,
"She's too...chirpy"
"Hyung you could do with a little chirpy considering your personality and the job descripstion"
"This little shit, well, let me call her back and then I'll have her serve your coffee for the rest of your life-get back here. Where do you think you're going?"
"i'm never coming back."
"Drama queen.").
"Eat something Kook. You look like a fucking skinny panda with dark circles like that."
Jungkook chuckled, "Okay Hyung, why don't you get me something?"
Yoongi scowled. He dragged his feet back to the counter, "Give that idiot something to eat please."
Jungkook tried his best to will the warmth reaching up his cheeks away as he slumped down in his seat to avoid any kind of eye contact with the rest of the cafe's staff-all of whom were now clearly watching Jungkook. Yoongi Hyung how could you. Before his mind could ramble on about the unfairness of everything a loud sound broke through his thoughts. Jungkook looked up to find a man rushing into the coffee shop in a hurry. He 'd seen him before, he'd arrived there about an hour ago but Jungkook had only watched him for a second. The man had been waiting for somebody, at least that's what Jungkook had thought when he saw him with his back turned towards him at the table in the center of the place(ew, bad choice). The most shocking thing about him, aside from his petite frame, and soft looking hands, was the mop of orange hair on his head. He must've gotten a lot of attention (Jungkook cringed). He must have gone outside to wait, Jungkook now guessed, as he reentered.
The man was now walking towards him and the breath was knocked right of Jungkook's lungs. He could swear on all things holy and proclaim that the man was breathtaking. His orange hair was parted at the center and the locks lying on his forehead bounced as he walked. Time seemed to have slowed down as the man came closer. Jungkook noticed his pretty eyes, full lips and had only begun to notice the slight frown gracing his features when the man actually did come to his table and sat opposite Jungkook without a word.
Jungkook's eyes widened, like they usually did when he was faced with an unfamiliar situation. Oh god what do I do what do I do-
He noticed the beautiful man(ugh don't call him that brain) looking down on his lap. With a frown of his own Jungkook noticed his bottom lip quivering as he stared at his phone. Before he could get over his momentary panic-
("not so momentary"
"ugh Yoongi Hyung no one asked you anyway."
"Jungkook...I'm a voice in your head.
"...well you sound like him.")
-the man started crying. It was one tear at first, then another, and then they kept coming as the man broke down into hysterical sobs right across the table. Jungkook hated to even think about anything other than the fact that such an angel should not be crying but his mind was actually wondering if he should try and talk to him. Did he have to? Come on Jungkook he's crying!
"Uhh umm Hi, uhh"
("ask him if he's okay!"
" Of course he's not, he's crying!"
"That's how people talk, not that you would know anything about it"
"what do you know you're just a voice!")
The man's, boy's for he looked very young, head snapped up when he spoke and Jungkook immediately froze. He had pretty eyes...ahem.
"Oh-h uhh sor-rry I j-just yeah sorry. I'll l-leave?" It was the first time in his life that Jungkook had heard someone stutter more than him and it gave him a certain rush of confidence in which he shook his head no. It passed in a second. Oh what did I do, he's gonna stay and talk and cry-
"My boyfriend stood me up and broke up with me over a text! A text!" The boy was practically wailing now. Never in his life of 19 long years, well, not that long, had Jungkook ever felt more helpless. Would he have to say something to him now? What should he say?
"I -I sent him a text asking him why uhh" the boy's phone pinged and he fumbled around with the phone before switching it on and reading through whatever reply he had received. Much to his horror, the boy stood up and shrieked," What!" Not knowing what to do, Jungkook stood up as well. He realised he must be looking very dumb by doing so but he didn't know what to do!
"He s-said I wasn't paying him attention!" The boy's face spelt disbelief and anger and Jungkook's mouth fell open. He shut it again. He opened-
"How could you do this to me!" The boy was now screaming and the terrible realisation of being watched by the entire coffee shop dawned on him. Jungkook's eyes widened even further.
"Will you stop screaming they're looking at us!" Jungkook spoke quickly, fumbling over his words and somebody at the table nearest to theirs hissed at him. Oh. They think he's crying because of him.
"Uhh stop crying." The boy cried even harder, muttering angry words and covering his face with his fisted hands.
Jungkook shot Yoongi a panicked look, a look that screamed Hyung help me!
Unfortunately, Jungkook forgot the sadistic pleasure his so-called friend gained out of watching him suffer. Yoongi simply smirked at him. He looked back at the boy, "p-please stop crying." No response.
"I'm sorry!"
The boy looked up, "why are y-you sorry?" He sniffed. Jungkook thought it was cute.
("no I didn't."
"yeah you did."
"Nope. Nah.Never."
"I'm literally inside your head."
"....")
"Oh um y-you keep c-crying. Uhh, I d-dont know what to"
The boy started crying yet again. Jungkook could swear he heard Yoongi laugh. He stood up and cautiously took a step forward towards the boy, then another and then patted the boy's head twice-it was easy to do so since he was kind of short
("Hey!"
"Who re you?"
"I'm his voice, don't call him short!"
"Get out of Jungkook's head. This is my territory."
"Both of you, shut up. Its my head!")
The boy looked at him, a little startled, and then Jungkook repeated the gesture, there...there." He muttered awkwardly like he saw people in the movies do.
The boy stared at him for two whole seconds before he burst out laughing. He doubled over in laughter, smacking Jungkook's arm as he did so (!) and giggled like it was the funniest thing in the world. Even though he was offended, Jungkook took his time thinking about how nice those giggles sounded, like the sweet sound of rainbows.
("Jungkook, whats wrong with you, rainbows dont make sounds."
"And voices inside heads dont speak!"
"Im your conscience you idiot."
"So side with me! If I say rainbows sound, they do."
"...")
"umm now youre laughing," the orange head continued laughing as if he hadn't heard Jungkook, "okay at least they know I didn't do anything but they probably think youre crazy which you probably are-shit sorry I d-didnt mean i-it. I t-talk a lot when I g-ge nervous n-not that I'm n-nervous uhh."
The boy stopped giggling and swallowed, adams apple bobbing up and down-
("Deliciously, come on, I know you thought it."
"Stop embarrassing me!"
"we're in your head!")
"Is this perhaps your first time comforting anyone?" the boy was trying not to laugh again. Jungkook simply stared back dumbly, cheeks getting redder by the second.
"Maybe." His voice was so small that even he barely managed to hear it.
The boy smiled at him kindly, and then sniffled, before sitting back down. "My boyf- ex boyfriends an asshole. I hate his guts. Hate him so so so much ugh. I cant believe he did this. Thanks for letting me sit here. Youre nice. Kinda cute too." And then he giggled. Again.
Jungkook could almost hear the machines in his head whirring as he processed those words. Hed been complimented and hit on by a lot of people before and his record of dealing with them was not great. But this felt different. This boy didnt sound like he just said it to get in his pants. He just said it like it was a fact. Jungkook kinda blushed.
("yeah, you did"
"Just shut up")
Jungkook frowned as he remembered he still didnt have a name to match this attractive stranger.
"whats your name?" Jungkook managed to blurt out and the boy looked at him blankly, "oh, right, sorry. How rude of me to just sit here and ramble on about my problems and my shitty life and my shitty boyfriend-of-until-two-minutes-ago. Really, thats simply rude. Im not normally this weird. I even called you cute. Hah. This day just keeps getting better, sorry if it made you uncomfortable again. Oh look at your face, its still so red, of course I made you uncomfortable. Man I ju-"
"Thats a very long name." Jungkook simply stated, anything to keep the orange-haired male from talking anymore.
This time it was the other boy who blushed, and then smiled, "Sorry. Im emotionally drained right now. I'm Jimin, Park Jimin"
"I'm Jungkook. Jeon Jungkook." Okay so he couldnt help it, it really sounded like Jimin was trying to pull a Bond.
Thank god because Jimin laughed at his stupid attempt at humour and almost fell over clutching his stomach, "Whaaa youre funny. So tell me Jungkook, are you waiting for someone?"
"um not really no, I, uhh, usually sit here, alone."
"Really? Okay. How old are you?"
"19"
"Oh Im 21! Im your hyung~"
"Really? But youre short. "Jungkook hadn't meant to say it, but bless his mouth which tended to blurt out all the wrong things. He was so sure that Jimin was going to scream at him and leave but-
"Yah! Jungkookie~" Jimin whined and pouted and Jungkook began to laugh. He stopped abruptly when he remembered it wasnt like him to be so open around strangers but his thoughts were happily interrupted by Jimins rambling about his college life and kids these days and dance classes and superhero movies. Jungkook found himself utterly interested in the entire of existence of Park Jimin. It was beyond him how anyone could let go of this literal angel sitting across the table.Of course he stuttered and gave awkward replies but everything felt so easy when it came to this handsome stranger. Soon enough, they found themselves amidst a heated conversation about their favourite avengers.
“I'm sorry hyung, but iron man sunbaenim is the best."
To his disappointment, their time to part ways came soon enough, and Jungkook found himself craving Jimins company for just a little longer. Jimin seemed to notice this as he smiled brightly at Jungkook, eyes disappearing into gorgeous crescents as Jungkook had learnt it did when he was genuinely happy or amused in their short time together, Sorry Jungkookie, but we have to go. Wait I could give you my number, Jimin then proceeded to hurriedly scribble in his number on a napkin and handed it to Jungkook.
"Call me soon cutie. " Jimin winked at him and then he was gone.
As for Jungkook, he stood there, frozen with his face warm and red up to the tips of his ears till Yoongi came and interrupted his little i-can't-believe-that-happened session.
“God bless your luck Jungkook, he literally sent someone to you because you wouldn't go out. I guess years of whining and complaining about everything in this café finally paid off."
Jungkook's lips split into a big, dumb grin on their own that forced Yoongi to roll his eyes and mutter a 'Well, shit.' because dealing with a lovesick Jeon Jungkook was going to be twice as difficult as dealing with the usual annoying one.
