whirl beneath the downpour

Summary:

A date ruined by the unstable weather, but you don’t see it as bad—more like an opportunity to create unforgettable memories between you and your lover of dancing in the pouring rain.

Notes:

Another fluff one shot, I'm on a roll—
Also, it might be a little cliché but that's because I'm a hopeless romantic at heart, what can I say

Work Text:

"Well this is...something" you chuckled, looking at the dark clouds in the sky as they poured heavy water onto Ninjago. The sound of rain hitting the ground grew louder, and the air around both of you began to turn colder in mere seconds.

"I thought the weather app said it would be sunny" Lloyd commented while scrunching his nose.

"Partially cloudy actually" you added teasingly

"Okay well, it didn't say 'dropping a waterfall' " he threw back—making you laugh at his annoyance at the differing climate.

'This is awful' he thought to himself, he wanted to spend time with you but now he feels that everything is ruined. Neither of you have an umbrella and Nya is nowhere near to come to the rescue so now you're stuck under a picnic shelter, which was the nearest place you could find, to not get soaked under the storm.

Your hands reached for the outside—cold droplets hitting your bare skin, water pooling in your palms as you cup them and let them drop.

You smiled at the sensation of the rain, "Guess we're stuck here for now" you nodded to the ninja beside you

"Yeah" he said softly as he got closer to the edge, gazing at the rain dropping on the park.

"Y'know..." you start, "I love the rain" you beamed as you retrieve your hands and rub them together, feeling its wetness.

"Really? Why?" He asked curiously, as he now gazed at you

"I've always found it relaxing," you said "from the sounds it makes, to the earthy smell it creates" almost as if nature heard you, a small gust of cold wind went in your direction—making both of you shiver slightly.

He didn't reply immediately, he was in thought as he focused on the things you mentioned, "Sound and smell huh..." he muttered to himself as he raised his body warmth with his fragment of fire power.

"My mom was the one that made me love the rain" you added, "We would always play board games or make hot chocolate and watch a movie together" you gushed as you reminisced your childhood.

The memories of the cup heating your cold hands and the fluffy blanket that surrounded you as you watched your favorite movie with the rain serving as background noise. You looked back at your lover, "What about you?" you asked gently. He did a quick 'hm?', questioning what you meant.

"Do you like the rain?" You inquired, the question hung in between the two of you as he stared into your eyes in thought.

"I...I don't have strong feelings on it like you," he replied—staring back at the gray clouds above the city, "Don't have good nor bad memories with rain" he lightly shrugged, one of his hands moved forward as he now felt the water hit his palm. Anytime it rained he was either inside his room reading Starfarer comic books or he was in the middle of doing patrol so he would get soaked—and fighting and walking around all wet wasn't...ideal.

His words engraved themselves into your head, as you felt a few faint water droplets on your hand—you had an idea. "Then how about we start today with good memories" you implied with a soft nudge at his arm.

"What do you mean?" His brows furrowed in confusion as he retrieved his hand and shook its water off. He saw you go back to the picnic table, put your jacket on the wood and underneath the thick fabric you placed the bag you carried.

"Care to share this dance with me?" You proposed, extending your hand towards him as you nod to the rain before the two of you

"You want to dance?" He asked, you nodded "Under the rain?" He added to his original question whilst pointing with his thumb at the waterfall that befell on the park, stunned by the mere idea of your proposal, making you nod once more.

"I always wanted to dance under the rain with someone, maybe today's our lucky day" you smiled, waiting on his answer

"I...don't know about this" he hesitated, his eyes darting to your open hand, towards the grassy fields and back to your eyes.

"Come on!" You laugh as you grab onto his hand and tug a bit "It'll be fun!" You encouraged with a wink

"We could get sick y'know" he retorted, tugging you back a bit

"Yeah, we might get sick, but who cares?" You persuaded as you got in front of him, now mere inches between the two of you.

He inhaled sharply as you got closer, "I care" he murmured

You licked your lips as your eyes held his gaze, he darted between staring at your eyes and your mouth. He gulped as you grasped his hand tighter, your other hand now rested flat on his chest—you felt his heartbeat against your palm.

"I'm not going to be lured by you to dance in the rain" he blurted out, his warm breath caressing the cold skin of your face.

"You're no fun greenie, let's live a little" you whispered as you got closer, there was a flicker in his eyes, maybe you're finally getting through him.

"Your plan is something out of the cheesy rom-com movies Jay and Nya watch" he stated with a chuckle as a few rain drops got on his face from another gust of wind.

"Doesn't mean we can't make it reality" you shrugged, smiling softly whilst interlocking his hand with yours.

"What do you say?" You asked as your head tilts slightly, waiting on his answer

He still had a conflicted look on his face, not knowing whether or not to follow you to the dance floor that was underneath the chillness of the water. You reluctantly sigh at his expression, 'if he doesn't want to, then you'll go alone' you thought to yourself.

So without giving it much thought, you dropped his hand and ran head first into the rain; you heard him calling your name so you turned around, smiling as the droplets hit your skin and clothes.

"It's cold, but fun!" You yelled back as you did a quick spin under the blizzard, you began to find joy as your clothes continued to get soaked beneath the storm. He stared at you amusedly, at the way you smiled and laughed as you continued to move yourself under the waterfall emanating from the clouds.

He let out a small sigh, went back to the picnic table to leave his jacket and anything important so it wouldn't get wet and stepped onto the rain. His hair catching the cold water first, he felt his wrist being grabbed, and effectively causing him to be dragged by you to an open part of the park.

Though you both were under the storm, you smiled brightly at the situation, he wanted to follow your light—your positiveness. Even in the coldness that surrounded the two of you, he basked in the warmth of your presence and the heat from your body. He returned your smile and held onto your hands, you both didn't have music but it wasn't needed, the sounds the rain gave was more than enough for the two of you to move to its rhythm.

His touch moved to your hips and your hand, whilst your remaining hand laid on his already damp shoulder. He twirled you around, sweeping you into a waltz—you both laughed while the rain danced to the beat of your hearts. Your shoes were dragging against the wet grass, the sides of them getting dirtier but neither of you cared.

The joy and laughter that you both shared never dimmed, it only got louder even in the midst of the downpour.

It was intimate as he pulled you in closer, the rain making little trails as it went down both of your faces. Your clothes clang onto your body, they were heavy but you remained light on your feet while you swayed from side to side. His body emanated warmth so you wouldn't freeze to death while you two danced.

"Isn't it fun?" You asked whilst laughing, your hand dropping his own and wrapping around his head as you two continue to sway.

"I'd say wet" he states chuckling, you looked at him sternly to force him to confess, "...it is fun, happy?" He admits with a toothy grin

"See, that wasn't so hard" you teased as you played with a few strands of his wet hair, he rolled his eyes but didn't argue. He continued moving with you, the dance became slower—almost like you were in a ballad.

You moved his hair from his face back with your fingers combing it, to see his expressions better. It made you happy to see his new found enjoyment over the idea you had on a whim. You both spun and grooved, nature being the only witness to the combined bliss you both seeped.

Out of nowhere, he lifts you up in a spin with a hug; a gasp escapes you as you don't feel the ground beneath your feet. He laughs at your speechlessness, making you hit his shoulder lightly with one of your open hands. You both stared at each other for some seconds, you saw each other in the rawest state; the pure and unfiltered nature of happiness.

You were glad it was with him that you shared it with, and he was equally pleased that you trusted him enough so he could also be true with you.

With the rain still pouring on your bodies, you both closed the gap that remained with a kiss. Your arms hugged his neck to deepen the link you now shared, and  his hands remained around you as he continued to lift your body. Your breaths became warm and soft caresses against each other's face, the water still dropped heavily but your hair served as a make-shift umbrella to cover the blond.

The butterflies in your stomachs that escaped mixed themselves with the rain above, free to roam around the two of you as they danced to the moves of your kiss.

As you both took the chilly air to fill your lungs, your foreheads stayed pressed against each other. Feeling the continuous water travel down your faces but also basking in the warmth of each other's bodies; you smiled, at this point your cheeks started to ache from smiling so much.

"I love you" you muttered, with your eyes still closed, feeling his rapid heartbeat against your own.

He smiled at your soft confession, "I love you too" he whispered back

"Even though you'll get me sick" he added with small laughter

"Worth it" you said whilst making space between the two of you to look at him once more, you smile teasingly and he can't help but return your playfulness

You both laughed once more, cherishing the confessions you shared under the waterfall the two of you relished in.
