Dragons & Destiny - World-Building

Summary:

Fourteen Gods of The World, Eight Schools of Occultism, Seven Kingdoms of Dragons, and Six Wielders of the Wings of Fire.

Pyrrhia has never been like this before.

Work Text:

The Kingdom of Sand has been locked in a brutal battle over the throne for almost twenty years. Five years after the beginning of the war, the other Kingdoms began to become involved. Three years later was the official declaration of its title, The Third Great Pyrrhian War. It was a bleak time for all of the tribes, which is when a bright beam of hope broke through the clouds of despair, a prophecy was delivered by a Nightwing prophet, stating that dragonets born on the Brightest Night would have a power of salvation that would guide the continent into peace times. A powerful connection called The Wings of Fire that all children born under the three moons possessed.

When the Three Moons alight

Breaking the Veil of Night

Children born to end the Fight

Honored by their Birthright

The Blazing Battle will waver at their Power

The Burning Blades will quiver in Claws

The Blistering Blight will heal during their Hour

As they carry Wings of Fire

Search they must for the origin

Search they must for the oracles

A Dragon of each kind

Will cause the world to align

Territories

Kingdom of Sand

The largest territory on land, The Kingdom of Sand is littered with skirmishes that leave settlements destroyed and families scattered. At its center lies The Stronghold, an impenetrable fortress that was decorated with the corpses of Princess Burn’s enemies. Despite Burn’s power over the Stronghold the overall kingdom is equally split between the Princesses as they push and retreat in their forces' battles against each other.

Scorpion Den

Famously The Scorpion Den used to be a city of deserters and criminals. But recently it has come under the control of Thorn and her Outclaws. Successfully she has kept the trifles of war out of her walls and The Scorpion Den has become a refuge for victims of war.

Sky Kingdom

The Sky Kingdom is the most mountainous territory. With their capital being in the largest mountain range, The Claws of The Cloud Mountains. The Sky Palace being in the center of it all, a symbol of opulence to the rest of the tribes with its grandeur.

The Arena

The Sky Kingdom doesn’t have a traditional death sentence. Queen Scarlet claims that they don’t believe in capital punishment, but anyone with passing knowledge of the Skywing’s knows otherwise. Their version is more cruel. You’ll get placed in the Arena, and they claim you have a fighting chance, but you have to make it through four fights and one the last fight they place you up against the Queen’s indomitable champion. Her very own Wings of Fire.

Mud Kingdom

Defined by its wide swamps and marshes, The Mud Kingdom has the most agricultural proficiency and potential. Supplying their allies and troops with all the provisions they could need. Despite its last luster appearance, they are the most affluent of the kingdoms and do not spare expenses when it comes to their people.

Talons of Peace

Hailed as common knowledge among Mudwings. The Talons of Peace have many hideouts in The Mud Kingdom due to Moorhens hidden support of them. Many Mudwings who’ve become orphaned either become a Talon of Peace or a farmer.

Ice Kingdom

The furthermost territory on Phyrrhia, the Ice Kingdom is a place of strength. Its shining cities are protected by a magical wall that kills outsiders and its legions of highly trained Icewing soldiers.

The Circles

A ruthless system that allows Icewings to climb the ranks of their society. The less circles the higher you rise. The highest three circles reside in the palace with the royals. While the bottom three are left to rot at the edges of society.

Kingdom of the Sea

The truly largest kingdom. The Kingdom of the Sea spans the oceans, it's the most populous kingdom. No outsider will ever know the true glamour of the kingdom under the waves. They are the most defended kingdom due to their enemies biological inability to enter it.

Hidden Palaces

The Seawings have multiple palaces that outsiders can’t locate, both on land and within the waters. Their closely held secrets have been the sturdy basis for Blister’s continued relevance. Any Seawing either knows or has access to the location of their palaces.

Rainforest Kingdom

Filled with trees that cover the sky with their canopy, the Rainforest Kingdom is a place of song and dance. Filled with a tribe known for their colors and flamboyance, the Rainforest is a territory where the arts thrive and social standing means nothing, due to the carefree nature of its inhabitants.

Free From Conflict

The Rainwings are the only tribe not involved with The Third Great Pyrrhian War, so their kingdom is filled with many refugees and as a result, hybrids. Due to its incredibly diverse population it has also been known as the Rainbow Kingdom, by travelers. But the rainforest lifestyle is not for everyone and they have strict rules about diets.

The Ruined Kingdom

The ancient and abandoned territory of the mythical Nightwings, The Ruined Kingdom is a dangerous place, crawling with undead and other magical abominations. It’s a death trap for any innocent soul too unfortunate to wander into the place. The Nightwings are presumed extinct, despite the rumors of prophecies that arise every now and again suggesting otherwise.

An Occult Trove

Before the destruction of the kingdom, The Night Kingdom was a center for Occult study, but due to a powerful spell gone wrong the whole kingdom has been left to ruin with monsters roaming, but there are still many mighty enchanted items left in the kingdom for those who can bear the danger.

Deities

The Wild Winds

An ancient spirit of freedom. The worship of The Wild Winds is most common in the Sand Kingdom, but not as common as it once was. Although most followers of the Wild Winds are nomads, they all take the time once a year to journey to The House of Tempests, the only existing temple of The Wild Winds. It is located near the Scorpion Den and also receives many visits from refugees.

The Heavens

The Heavens represent more of an idea than a literal god. It was a belief that one could be temporarily reunited with the memories of the dead when you fly through a cloud. Skywings are the most common followers of The Heavens. They place their dead in the highest points on mountains so they can safely return to The Heavens.

The Soil-Mother

The Soil-Mother is the goddess of Spring and the harvest. Her worship is most common in the Mud Kingdom. All Mudwings call her Mother and will call each other siblings no matter their actual affiliation with each other. There is no organized cult of the mother, and every sib troop has a slightly different interpretation. She is married to the Great Ice Dragon despite their yearly dispute whenever the seasons change.

The Great Ice Dragon

The Great Ice Dragon is the god of Winter and auroras. His worship is most common in the Ice Kingdom. He has many cathedrals and churches littered throughout the Ice Kingdom. It is said that auroras are his frostbreath and the Great Ice Wall was constructed from his power. He is the brother of the Triplet Moons and they find worship in his temples as well. He is married to the Soil-Mother despite their yearly dispute whenever the seasons change.

The Painter

The Painter is the god of family and art. His worship is most common in the Sea Kingdom with many temples existing in his name. It is said he controls the direction that water flows with swipes of his brush. He occasionally takes on mortal form, leaving his memories behind so he may live and eventually die in the world of his children to inspire his next artwork. He is the father of The Radiances.

The Radiances

The Radiances are the gods of light and emotion. Their worship is common in the Rainforest Kingdom, but Blue also finds some worship in the Sea. They are the six goddexx that bring light  and meaning into the world. Many artists would consider them muses and the origin of creativity. Rainwings often hold festivals in their honor. They are the children of The Painter.

The Triplet Moons

Imperial, Perception, and Oracle are the goddesses of The Occult, Knowledge, and Prophecy respectfully. They used to be worshiped in the Night Kingdom before it fell to an Animus spell. They are now also worshipped in the Ice Kingdom alongside their brother, but they will always mourn their lost children.

Spellcasters

Spellcasters are rare. The power to bend reality with a thought is sought out in most kingdoms and held in high regard by the average dragon.

Miracle Workers

Miracle Workers are the most common spellcasters. They receive their powers from the gods. Miracle Workers develop all sorts of abilities, but they all have access to healing magic. Their power directly affects dragons compared to Occultism.

Occultists

The Occult is magic secular from the gods. It was developed in the ancient Night Kingdom by studying the process that Miracle Workers use to cast spells, and emulating it. Miracles interact with dragons directly, while The Occult interacts with the Physical World. The ancient Occult Schools are lost to the Ruined Kingdom, but more modern practices have arisen in their place.

Six Schools

The Six Schools of Modern Occultism are; Icewing Abjuration, Sandwing Conjuration, Seawing Enchantment, Skywing Evocation, Rainwing Illusion and Mudwing Transmutation. While not traditional practices, Divination and Necromancy are both considered the ancient Nightwing School, with much debate on which was the true original magic.

Animi

Animus Magic, more widely known as Dark magic. Is the power of lies. If an animus can convince you of something, it’ll become true. But these lies have a toll on the caster as well. Animi are hunted in many kingdoms to prevent the danger they may become in the future.

Falscheskind

Dragonets born of lies and stories, the Falschekind are implements of Animus Magic into reality. Usually placing themselves into families seamlessly. While not always malicious they can accidently replace dragons in the minds of others.

Wings of Fire

All dragons born on The Brightest Night share this power. It forges a special connection between all people that wield it. A magical bond that allows one to share power and take on the wounds of another that shares the power.

Fire-Bearers

Dragons who wield the Wings of Fire. Fire-Bearers are not necessarily born on The Brightest Night and are hunted in the Sky Kingdom for their dangerous potential.
