A tangled wedding

Summary:

Short story about Rapunzel and Flynn's return to the kingdom and their wedding.

Notes:

This is basically a shorter version of my other Tangled story 'Our ever after', only this time I made her parents nicer. This is for my Disney Princess Wedding Stories collection and is basically my version of the short film 'Tangled ever after' which was supposed to take place shortly after the movie as stated by the synopsis and was portrayed that way in the short. This story is basically my headcanon for the movie's ending and the short.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Rapunzel still couldn’t believe it. Her tears had really brought Flynn back to life and now she was kissing him! Actually kissing him. But somehow it didn’t feel like enough.

I just lost him. I need more of him. More closeness. More Eugene.

Without thinking, her fingers slipped beneath the edge of his shirt, brushing his skin.

Flynn stiffened. Being touched that way scared him. It reminded him of painful memories in the orphanage. No. Too much. Too fast.

He gently and carefully pulled back. “Woah, Rapunzel. I mean… hang on a second.”

She blinked at him, then broke into a radiant smile. “Eugene, you’re alive. You’re truly okay. You were really willing to die for me?”

Flynn smiled. She deserves to know how I feel about her. He took a deep breath. “Rapunzel… I love you.”

She gasped happily, grinning. He loves me. I knew it. “I love you too, Eugene.”

“Really?” he asked, afraid he had misheard.

“Yes, with all my heart,” she exclaimed and pulled him into another passionate kiss.

She loves me. Me. The most beautiful soul in the world loves me. How is this real? How did I get so lucky?

Her whole body melted against his. Her arms wrapped around his neck, drawing him closer, and her mouth opened beneath his. Her fingers slipped beneath his shirt again.

Flynn trembled. No, this is too much. It reminds me of... No, I don’t want to think about that. I know, Rapunzel would never hurt me. But I can’t do that now. I need time to prepare myself for that and I should marry her first anyway.

He pulled back once more. “No, Rapunzel. I can’t.”

Her smile faltered, tears filling her eyes. “Don’t you want me?”

“Of course, I do, Rapunzel,” he said quickly, reaching for her hands. “I love you. It’s just... well, this kind of closeness... It can lead to complicated things. You could get pregnant. And that should only happen between people who are married.”

“Married?” She tilted her head. “What’s that?”

So, Flynn explained everything. Vows, promises, witnesses, standing before others and choosing each other forever. Rings, a celebration, a life shared side by side.

“And after that,” he added softly. “A couple can be… closer.”

Rapunzel smiled, her eyes sparkling. A promise to stay together forever. To love each other for the rest of our lives. And then we are allowed to share more closeness. I want that with him. I want everything with him.

Flynn took a deep breath, then took her hands, squeezing them. “Rapunzel… will you make me the happiest man alive? Will you marry me? Be my wife and have me as your husband?” Please, say yes. Please, be mine.

She beamed. “Yes! Of course!” And then she threw her arms around his neck, kissing him fiercely.

Flynn kissed her back, trying to steady himself. You can do this. Kissing her is beautiful. You can also soon give her more. She wants you. What is this miracle?

But when she pulled him down to the ground with her, her fingers tangling in his hair, her legs wrapping around his waist, he gently pulled back and cupped her cheek. “Wait, Rapunzel. I’d say we leave the kingdom now, go somewhere I’m not wanted and I’ll find an honest job to make it happen. And on our wedding night,” he added, brushing his thumb across her cheek. “We’ll share that closeness, I promise.”

Rapunzel hesitated. He should know who I truly am. That I’m the lost princess. I must tell him. “Eugene, there’s something I have to tell you. That awful woman wasn’t my real mother. I found out she kidnapped me as a baby. And… I now know who my real parents are.”

“That’s amazing. Who are they?”

She took a deep breath. “Eugene, I’m the lost princess.”

Flynn went pale. He stumbled back against the staircase, breathing heavily. No, this can’t be. But it makes so much sense. The lanterns, her birthday… she even looks like the queen. She is the princess. Why didn’t I see it before? She’s royalty and I’m… a criminal, a nobody, a mistake. Now we’re over. Nobody would allow our love. Why is the world so cruel? He blinked back tears.

“Eugene?” Rapunzel asked worriedly, brushing his cheek. “What is it?”

Flynn forced himself to breath normally. “Then I will take you back to your parents now. And then… I must leave.”

She gasped. “What?!” No, no, no. I can’t lose him. Never again.

“A princess can’t marry a thief, Rapunzel. It’s against the law. A royal can only marry another royal. That’s how it works. Our love is over now. No one would allow it.”

Tears welled in her eyes. “No, I won’t let them force us apart.”

“You won’t be able to do anything,” he said, shaking his head. “The world is cruel.” He let out a quiet breath. I’ve never told anyone this… “It also forced my parents apart this way. I like to think my father really loved my mother and only left because he wasn’t allowed to marry her because she wasn’t royalty and…”

“Your father was royalty?” She brushed away her tears. “But then you are too. Then we can marry…”

Flynn shook his head. “No, I’m not. I’m just a royal’s bastard child. I have no title, no inheritance, nothing. I’d need a real title to be allowed to marry you. We’re over, Rapunzel. Nobody is going to allow this.”

“No,” she said firmly, grabbing him by the collar of his shirt. “I won’t let them tear us apart. I will tell them if they can’t accept our love and let us get married, then I will not return to them.”

Flynn gasped. No, she can’t give up anything for me. I won’t let her. “No, Rapunzel.” He took her hands quickly, urgently. “You can’t give that up. Your parents, your life, everything you’ve just found... for me.”

“If they can’t accept who I love and force me to marry some prince just for the kingdom’s reputation, then they don’t deserve me anyway. And I will just make them accept us. Think about it.” She rested her forehead against his. I’m not powerless anymore. I finally understand that.

“I have all the power,” she whispered. “I have a choice. I don’t have to return to them at all. I will tell them that I love you, and I won’t stay if they try to separate us, because I don’t need them.”

Flynn’s heart pounded. She’s serious. She’d give it all up for me?

“And then they’ll have no choice but to give in and bless our marriage,” she added. “And if they still refuse, then they are not worth it. I won’t give up on our love, and I won’t let anyone tear us apart.”

“But…”

She silenced him with a deep kiss, nipping at his lower lip, making him groan, her hands sliding into his hair, pulling him closer as if she could anchor him there. For a moment, he tensed and then forced himself to breathe. Pull yourself together. Kissing her and being close to her isn’t scary. It’s wonderful. Slowly, he let himself lean into it, into her warmth, her certainty. She wants me. She chooses me. And maybe her parents will accept us. And if they don’t and she doesn’t want them or that life as a princess, I will build her a new one. I will trust her decision.

Flynn pulled back and leaned his forehead against hers. “Alright,” he murmured. “We’ll do it your way. Anything for you, my darling.” Trust her. Just this once, trust that something good can last.

Rapunzel smiled and kissed him deeply, letting her hands wander beneath his shirt again.

Flynn laughed and caught them. “Rapunzel…”

“But I want more,” she said, her voice soft but insistent.

“I told you…” he said gently but firmly. “On our wedding night, but not before that.”

She sighed. “Alright,” she relented. “But promise, it will happen soon.”

Flynn brushed a strand of hair from her face “As soon as possible,” he promised and they shared one more kiss.

Then they rode back to the kingdom together on Maximus, the wind rushing past them. Rapunzel held onto Flynn tightly. I’m not letting go. Not ever again.

When the castle gates opened and her parents rushed forward, emotion overwhelmed her, but she didn’t let go of Flynn. Not even for a second. Instead, she turned, still holding him tightly, and faced them.

“I love him,” Rapunzel said firmly. “And he loves me. He saved my life. He died to free me from the tower. And we’re going to marry.” She lifted her chin. “If you can’t accept that, then I can’t return here.” I don’t need the kingdom. I just need love. And I’ll never lose him again.

The queen went pale while the king stiffened, anger flashing across his face. “What? No!” he snapped. “Absolutely not. A princess marrying a thief?” He shook his head sharply. “We can’t possibly allow that. What will the kingdom think? The other royals? No, that’s impossible. You must marry a prince.”

“Then, I will leave the kingdom with my Eugene and never return to you,” she said, her voice steady despite the tears in her eyes. “He is mine and I won’t give him up for anything. I don’t need a crown or a castle. But I do need love. And if you two can’t accept who I love and bless my marriage… if you want to force me to marry someone else, then you don’t deserve me. You can’t treat your own daughter whom you lost for 18 years like this. Or else you’ll lose me again. It’s your decision. Either you let us get married and be together or I’ll leave.”

She leaned against Flynn’s chest who wrapped his arms around her protectively, holding her close. Please, let them accept us. Please, let them say yes. I couldn’t live with myself if she lost them and a life of royalty because of me. Please don’t do this for me. Don’t give up everything. Not for someone like me. His arms tightened around her. But if they refuse, I’ll take her away. I’ll build her a life. I swear I will.

The king exhaled heavily, then slowly, reluctantly he nodded. “Very well,” he said. “I see, you leave me no choice. I suppose I have to give in.”

Rapunzel’s breath caught.

“Come here, Rider,” the king ordered. “Kneel.”

Flynn blinked, startled. Wait… what? He stepped forward carefully and knelt, his pulse quickening. Is this acceptance… or a sentence?

The king drew his sword.

Rapunzel gasped in horror and threw herself in front of Flynn, shielding him with her body. “No,” she screamed. “Don’t hurt him! Don’t you dare lay a finger on him!” I’d rather die myself than let anyone hurt my Eugene ever again.

The king sighed, exasperated. “I wasn’t going to hurt him.”

Rapunzel froze.

“I was going to knight him,” he continued. “Without a title, a wedding between you and him would cause serious conflict with neighboring kingdoms.”

Rapunzel smiled as widely as possible. “So, you accept us?” Yes, yes, yes.

“Yes,” the king said. “But he must have a title.”

Relief flooded through her. “Alright,” she said quickly, stepping aside. “Then do it.”

Flynn remained frozen for a heartbeat. Knighted? Me?

The king tapped Flynn on the shoulder with his sword. “I dub you a knight of this kingdom,” he declared. “And grant you the permission to marry my daughter. Arise, Sir Flynn Rider.”

“Eugene Fitzherbert,” Flynn corrected, smiling. “My real name. No more hiding.”

“Alright. Arise, Sir Eugene Fitzherbert.”

Flynn grinned and got up. Rapunzel threw herself into his arms.

I can’t believe it. I’m really a knight now. The way I always dreamed in my childhood, reading about them. And I have the permission to marry Rapunzel. What is this miracle? How did I ever get so impossibly lucky?

“I can’t believe it!” Rapunzel laughed, tears in her eyes. We did it. We really did it.

She pulled Flynn into a fierce kiss. Flynn stiffened for just a moment, then softened, returning the kiss carefully, grounding himself in her warmth. This is real. She’s really mine. And I don’t have to be afraid of closeness anymore.

“Ahem!” The king cleared his throat and they broke apart quickly. “But until the wedding, he’ll sleep in an inn,” the king added firmly. “No physical intimacy before the ceremony. Is that understood?”

Rapunzel sighed. He is as stubborn as Eugene. They all fear I would give myself to him completely and get pregnant before the wedding. And I can’t blame them because that’s exactly what I want and would do. And I want it as soon as possible. “Alright, father. But then we wish to be married as soon as possible. Tomorrow, if that’s alright?”

The king laughed. “No way. A royal wedding takes time to prepare. The soonest would be a month and that will also give you time... in case you’ll change your mind.”

“I won’t,” Rapunzel said instantly. “I will never stop loving him. But thank you for giving in and accepting us. Then please,” she added, smiling, “let the preparations begin right away. I don’t want to wait any longer than necessary.”

“First,” the king said. “We’ll celebrate your return. And then we’ll prepare the wedding.”

She smiled, leaning her head on Flynn’s shoulder, smiling. “I just hope it won’t take too long,” she murmured. “I can’t wait to marry him.”

Flynn wrapped his arms around her and held her protectively. Neither can I, my sunshine. And I’ll soon be yours. I still don’t understand how I got so lucky.

After the weeklong celebration of her return where Rapunzel stole as many passionate kisses from Flynn as possible, the wedding preparations finally began.

The kingdom moved quickly. The magistrate who had once sentenced Flynn to death was fired and banished immediately. The grand hall was decorated. Invitations were sent across the land. Rapunzel invited the thugs who wanted to help her. Hook Hand agreed to play the piano at the wedding. Atilla offered to bake a huge wedding cake. Maximus and Pascal were both appointed ring bearers. Rapunzel also insisted on designing her wedding gown herself and she wanted a long veil to symbolize the long hair she once had, which she was glad to have lost.

At night, she missed Flynn terribly and often wished to run away to whatever inn he was staying in and then sleep in his arms. I want his arms around me. I want to fall asleep on his chest and feel him breathing beneath me. I don’t want to sleep alone anymore. Oh, I hope the month is over soon. Just a little longer. Just a few more weeks.

Flynn, meanwhile, kept his distance, at least physically. But not emotionally. He took on small, honest jobs around the kingdom to buy Rapunzel a small wedding gift. Even though she is a princess with every luxury now, I still want her to have something from me. Something real. Something worthy of her.

Life in the castle was already starting to become suffocating for Rapunzel. She couldn’t stand all the rules and expectations and lessons. Each day, the walls felt a little closer.

One day, during the preparations, she slipped away from her attendants and found Flynn. The moment she saw him, relief flooded through her.

“Eugene.” She ran to him and wrapped her arms around him tightly, burying her face against his chest. “The castle is too much for me,” she said. “All the rules, all the expectations. I don’t think I can live like this forever. I wish we could move somewhere else. Somewhere a little more private.”

Flynn wrapped his arms around her, holding her close. She looks happier out here. Lighter.

“You don’t have to stay there forever,” he said gently. “You could talk to your parents. Maybe… after the wedding, we move somewhere quieter. Maybe another castle. A smaller one with only a handful of servants. We could move into our own place if it’s too much for you here.”

Rapunzel leaned her head against his shoulder. Our own castle? With more privacy and less expectations? A home where it’s just us? And I’d have him all to myself. No rules telling me when I can see him, no walls keeping us apart. And I could still visit my parents or the people here. That’s perfect.

Her parents were at first against that idea. “A princess does not simply leave the royal court,” her father insisted.

But Rapunzel stood her ground. I’ve come too far to lose my freedom now.

And then they had to give in to prevent Rapunzel running away with Flynn completely. They knew the kingdom would not be able to handle the scandal of their princess vanishing a second time. Reluctantly, they agreed.

Rapunzel smiled, relieved. I’ll have my Eugene and my freedom. This is perfect. This is everything I ever wanted.

At last, the month of preparation was over, and the wedding day was here. The grand hall was decorated, and everyone was gathered there to witness the wedding of their lost princess.

Flynn stood at the altar dressed in royal attire, wearing his knight’s sash. The clothes fit him, although he felt a little out of place with all the nobles and council members around him.

Okay, this is it, he thought. My wedding day. I never thought I’d ever stand here. Never thought anyone would want to marry me and have me as her husband. Sure, I’m handsome but I was such a mess. A thief. A man with a dark past. Yet here I am. And she wants me. My Rapunzel. The only one who ever looked at me and saw something worth loving.

And if she wanted to move out after today, he would take her to their own castle. He’d promised. I’ll tear these gilded walls down brick by brick if I have to.

Maximus walked proudly down the aisle, carrying the rings, with Pascal perched atop him. Despite himself, Flynn grinned. Of course it's them. My two tiny, judgmental chaperones. Carrying our rings.

Then time stilled.

Gasps echoed. Heads turned. And he saw her.

Rapunzel stood at the end of the aisle, bathed in light. She wore a simple white dress, soft and beautiful, with a long veil trailing behind like an echo of the long hair she once had and the girl she still was beneath the crown. She held a bouquet in trembling hands.

Flynn forgot how to breathe. She’s… Stars, she’s so beautiful. And she’s mine. Mine. How is this real? How am I the man she chose? How did a miracle like this land in my arms? I don’t deserve it, but I swear I’ll spend my life trying to. I’ll give her everything I have, everything I am. And tonight, I’ll give her the physical closeness she wants so badly. I’ll get over my fears, I swear it. I won’t let them stand between us anymore. I’ll make sure she never regrets choosing me.

And at the far end of the aisle, she stood frozen for a heartbeat, taking in the sight of him.

This is it, Rapunzel thought. Not a dream. Not a wish. My wedding. To him. My first ceremony, my first vows, my first everything. My forever. And then her father stepped beside her, offering his arm.

She smiled as widely as she could manage at Flynn as they began to walk down the aisle.

“Wow,” Flynn breathed. I could get used to a view like this. Hell, I am used to it. She’s been mine in every way that matters since that moment in the tower. Today the world will finally know it too. Then nothing can ever tear us apart again.

They reached the altar, and Rapunzel finally slipped free of her father’s arm. She grinned as she stepped toward Flynn. I’m really here. I’m walking toward my future. Toward him. Toward my choice. My home.

And as Flynn smiled at her, he thought, Whatever comes next, I’ll face it with her. And I’ll make damn sure nothing takes her from me again.

“Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to celebrate the joining of Rapunzel and Eugene in marriage,” the priest began.

Rapunzel barely heard a word. Her eyes were fixed on Flynn, her Eugene, standing before her in his ceremonial clothes with his knight’s sash, smiling at her like she was his entire world, which she knew she was. He’s here. And after today, he’s mine forever. No one will ever take him from me again.

She’s really here. She didn’t run. She didn’t change her mind. She wants me. Me of all people. How can this be real? How do I deserve someone like her? What if one day she realizes I’m not enough? Then I’ll make sure she never has a reason to. If she wants me, I’ll give her everything I have to give. I’ll work, I’ll bleed, I’ll do whatever it takes. As long as she’s happy.

He glanced briefly at Pascal and Maximus. They both gave practiced smiles. Flynn exhaled and turned his attention back to Rapunzel and the priest.

“Do you, Flynn Rider...” the priest hesitated, then corrected himself, “I mean Eugene Fitzherbert, take Rapunzel to be your lawfully wedded wife? Do you promise to love and cherish her, in sickness and in health, until death do you part?”

“I do,” Flynn said at once. “And longer than that. My love for her won’t end in death. And I should know, I’ve already been there.”

“And do you, Rapunzel,” the priest continued, “take Eugene Fitzherbert to be your lawfully wedded husband? Do you promise to love and cherish him until death do you part?”

“I do.” Forever. Beyond forever.

“All right. Then they shall live their lives together as husband and wife in everlasting peace. May I have the rings?”

They turned toward Maximus and Pascal and gasped.

The horse and the chameleon trotted forward proudly, completely drenched in tar, carrying the rings with comical pride.

What on earth…? Rapunzel blinked. How did that even happen in the middle of a wedding?

That’s… new, Flynn thought, fighting a laugh. At least they didn’t eat the rings.

He carefully took them from the tar-soaked duo, trying not to think too much about the tar and slid the band onto Rapunzel’s finger. Her hands trembled as she placed his ring onto his finger, her heart pounding.

The priest, still bewildered, cleared his throat. “I… I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss.”

Rapunzel didn’t wait. She jumped excitedly up and down and threw herself into Flynn’s arms, kissing him fiercely. The instant their lips met, everything else vanished.

Her mouth opened beneath his and her tongue brushed his teasingly. My husband. Mine. Finally mine. Her fingers tangled in his hair as if afraid, he’d disappear the moment she let go. Every inch of her leaned into him, needing him closer, needing him completely. He’s not going anywhere. He can’t. He’s mine now.

Flynn barely had time to breathe before her mouth claimed his. He caught her against him, holding her back, pulling her close. He slowly melted into the kiss. Her lips moved against his, soft, hungry, desperate and his head spun. She’s my wife. She chose me. She wants me. And I don’t have to be afraid of this anymore. Not of closeness. Not of love. Kissing her is wonderful and tonight, I’ll love her physically the way she wishes. I’ll give her all of me. I want it too. He deepened the kiss, unable to stop himself, one hand tangling in her short hair, while the other one traced down the curve of her waist.

Rapunzel sighed into the kiss. Her lips parted and she kissed him harder. The world beyond their kiss didn’t exist. He’s mine. I’ll never let him go again. Her body pressed into his chest, and she still felt the need to go further. To have more closeness. Her whole body leaned into his, craving the closeness she’d been denied for so long. She had to fight the urge to let her hands wander beneath his shirt and to pull him to the ground with her and undress him. Careful, Rapunzel. Not here. Not in front of everyone. But tonight, I’ll make him mine in every way. He promised we’ll share that physical love. I’ll have him in every way. Then we never have to stop again.

Flynn groaned against her lips. She’s my wife. My wife. And after today, I’ll take her somewhere free. I’ll give her everything I can. And tonight… she’ll have all of me. I’ll never be afraid again.

When they finally broke apart for air, they rested their foreheads together. Rapunzel brushed his cheek, her lips still pink and parted. He’s mine. I’ll never lose him again. Never again.

Flynn pressed a kiss to her forehead. Now we’re one completely.

After the signing of their marriage certificate, Flynn grinned. “So… who wants a piece of cake?”

They looked over, only to find the cake gone. Maximus and Pascal looked awkwardly at them, very still, very guilty.

Rapunzel shrugged, laughing. “Oh, well,” she said, shaking her head. “Let’s just cut a cupcake.”

After the unfortunate but somehow unsurprising disappearance of the wedding cake, Rapunzel and Flynn shared two cupcakes instead, laughing as they fed each other small bites.

It’s perfect anyway, Rapunzel thought, smiling. I don’t need anything grand. Just him.

Then they shared their first dance as husband and wife, swaying softly to the piano music Hook Hand was playing.

Rapunzel rested her head against his shoulder. This is real. I’m married. To him. Her fingers tightened around him. I’ll never lose him again. He’s mine forever.

Flynn held her carefully, almost reverently, as if afraid she might vanish if he loosened his grip. She’s my wife. The thought still felt unreal, like something borrowed from someone else’s life. But she was warm in his arms. Solid. Real. This is real. She’s really mine. Yeah, I could get used to this.

Then Rapunzel threw the bouquet which was caught by the girl Big Nose was courting, who immediately looked at him with dreamy excitement.

They’ll probably be next, Rapunzel thought, giggling. I hope they get a love like ours.

Then Flynn leaned close, whispering in her ear, “It’s time.”

“For what?” she asked.

Before she could react, he swept her off her feet in one smooth motion. “For me to sweep my wife off her feet and carry her off into the sunset. Come on.”

She laughed, wrapping her arms around his neck. I’ve never felt so weightless, so safe. So loved.

They hurried to the carriage, still laughing. Flynn gently set her inside, then climbed in after her. She curled into his side as the carriage began to move.

They waved goodbye to cheering friends and family as they rolled away from the castle, into the golden sunset.

Flynn looked at her, kissed the top of her head, and thought, This is the moment I never dared to dream would come true. And yet here she is. My wife. My light.

She turned to him, her eyes shining. Their lips met in a passionate kiss.

“Best day ever!” Rapunzel said with a joyous laugh. “And now our happily ever after finally begins.”

Flynn smiled, his forehead resting against hers. “And as happy as it can be. And I love you, Rapunzel.”

“And I love you more, Eugene.”

He smirked. “Then I love you the most, my sunshine.”

She laughed, her heart completely full. “And I you too.”

Flynn brushed a strand of hair from her face. “And you’ll always be my dream.”

She touched his chest, feeling his heartbeat. “And you’ll always be mine.”

They kissed again, deeply and tenderly, sealing their vows.

Then Rapunzel and Flynn moved into their own palace at the sea. Flynn carried her over the threshold of their room in the new home and gently set her down on the bed.

This is it, he thought, trembling. The wedding night. I promised her tonight I’ll make love to her. And I want to. I want to heal. I don’t want to be afraid anymore. What happened to me in my childhood shouldn’t define me. But I can’t stop thinking about it. But I want this. I want her. Rapunzel would never hurt me. I’m safe with her. And I want to give her everything.

“Eugene?”

Flynn turned around and smiled at her, still trembling a little. “Hm?”

“Are you really sure you can do this tonight? I mean, I want this more than anything, but I don’t want to pressure you...”

Flynn took her hands and cupped her cheek, brushing a strand of hair from her eyes. “You’re not pressuring me,” he said softly. “I want this too. I want us. I want to heal with you. I’m ready.”

“Yes!” She beamed and pulled him into a fierce kiss, wrapping her arms around his neck. He wants this. He’s choosing this. He’s choosing me. We’ll become one tonight. I’m so, so happy.

She helped him out of his sash and pulled up his shirt between frantic kisses.

Then she gasped when her gaze fell to the scar on his stomach. She leaned down and pressed a tender kiss to it, blinking back tears. That wound nearly took him from me. He bled for me. He suffered for me. He literally died for me.

Flynn cupped her cheek and brushed away her tears. “You healed me. You saved me. In every possible way.” She gave me back my life. I owe her everything. She is my heart. My love. My wife. My everything.

Rapunzel smiled. “I love you, Eugene.”

“And I love you, Rapunzel.”

Then he kissed her again, deeper now, filled with everything they had been holding back. He lifted her into his arms and carried her to their new bed.

They undressed slowly between gentle kisses, savoring every touch and kiss. When Flynn laid her down on the bed, he looked at her like she was made of starlight.

“You’re so beautiful… so perfect,” he whispered.

He’s looking at me like I’m the most beautiful thing in the world. And somehow, I believe him.

“Only because of you,” she whispered back, pulling him into another fierce kiss.

I’ll remember this, every sound, every touch for the rest of my life.

Then finally after more kisses, their bodies came together in harmony, a slow and tender dance of love. The world outside fell away. Time disappeared. In that moment, they weren’t just husband and wife, they were two souls fully entwined.

It was more beautiful than Rapunzel ever could have imagined. This is bliss. This is heaven. Finally, we are one in every way. He’s mine and nobody will ever take him from me again.

Flynn kissed her shoulders, her collarbone, every inch he could reach, worshipping her while she arched beneath him. This isn’t scary. This is safe. This is love. I never have to be afraid again. This is complete paradise.

They moved together, as though they’d always belonged to each other, revelling in the intimacy they had fought so hard to get.

Afterwards, when they finally stilled, breathless and exhausted, Flynn gathered her against his chest, as they lay tangled in the sheets and in each other’s arms. Rapunzel rested her head against his bare chest, listening to his heartbeat while he held her protectively.

“Wow,” she giggled, tracing hearts over his skin. “That was so amazing.”

Flynn smiled. “I’m so glad. I wanted it to be perfect for you. You deserve that, my angel.”

She beamed, leaning up to kiss him. “It really was,” she said warmly. “I hope it was alright for you too?”

He rested his forehead against hers, smiling. Gosh, she is so sweet. Always worrying about me. How do I deserve so much love and devotion? “It was amazing for me too,” he said gently, kissing her once more. “I’m not afraid anymore. I know I’m safe with you. This is beautiful. It’s complete bliss.”

She grinned and pulled him into another passionate kiss. He loved it. He’s not afraid anymore. Now nothing stands between us any longer. We are finally completely whole. Oh, this really is the best day ever.

Rapunzel pressed more kisses all over his face, then smirked mischievously and straddled his lap. “Then we can do it again.”

Flynn groaned playfully. “You’re exhausting.”

“You love it.”

He smiled and rolled her gently beneath him, kissing her deeply. “I do. And I love you,” he murmured against her lips.

“I love you too,” she whispered back, kissing him again, wrapping her legs around his waist.

Then once more, they surrendered to their passion and gave themselves to each other completely, making love with the same devotion and tenderness as before.

Afterwards, Flynn held her protectively in his arms, while she lay on his chest, pressing a kiss over his heart. “I’ll always love you,” she murmured, drifting off. He is my everything. Forever.

“And I’ll always love you,” Flynn whispered back, kissing her forehead. I’ll cherish and protect her for the rest of my life and beyond. She’s mine and I’m hers, forever.

Then he also drifted into a peaceful sleep, holding her safely in his arms.

After that, Rapunzel barely let Flynn leave the bed for an entire week. Not that he complained. They spent all their time snuggling, kissing, laughing, making love and simply being together without interruptions. No rules. No walls. Just us.

At some point during that week, Flynn gave her the small wedding gift he had worked so hard for, that month in the kingdom. A simple locket. Inside was a tiny drawing of the two of them together. Rapunzel blinked back tears as she opened it. Without a word, she threw her arms around him and kissed him deeply, pouring everything she felt into it. He made this for me. I’ll treasure this forever.

Flynn smiled against her lips. Good. That’s all I wanted.

After their honeymoon, they started to travel around. Far beyond the kingdom, beyond anything Rapunzel had ever imagined while trapped in her tower. Rapunzel painted every place they visited, and Flynn wrote short stories about their adventures. Our life, he thought often, glancing at her as she painted. Our story.

At night, they always found each other again and made love with so much passion that nothing else in the world mattered. And in time, they always went back to their castle by the sea. Home, Rapunzel would think, watching the waves. Not a place… him.

Nine months after the wedding, Rapunzel gave birth to their beautiful twins, Lilly and Leo, the first of seven children who filled their lives with joy and happiness. Flynn stat beside her, completely undone. I thought I had nothing once. Now I have everything.

Rapunzel and Flynn had really found their forever in each other. Through every adventure and peace, they stood side by side, helping one another heal from the shadows of their past. And each day, they cherished one another, never taking a single moment for granted.

I almost lost him, Rapunzel would sometimes think, holding him a little tighter.

I was nothing before her, Flynn would think, pressing a kiss to her hair.

Bound by the purest and most beautiful love, they lived out their days in happiness and bliss together with their children.

They truly lived happily ever after, cherishing one another until the very end.

Notes:

The ending with them moving away into their own palace at the sea is a reference to the ending of the Barbie version of Rapunzel.
