Chapter 1: getting ready

Chapter Text

“Bran!” Wil called, “Bran come here!”

Bran poked his head out of the bathroom, comb in hand.

“What?”

“Does this look okay?” Wil asked, holding his arms out and looking down at himself, then up at Bran. He wore a tan ghost busters uniform, with a ghost vacuum on his back, he had also decided to wear a bit of eyeliner as well, and Bran loved it when Wil wore eyeliner.

“Oh my god.” Bran said, dropping the comb onto the ground.

“What?”

“You look fucking incredible.”

“Aw, thanks.” Wil blushed, doing a little spin to show off the back of his costume. “Are you almost ready? We need to leave in like 30 or so minutes.”

“Yep!” Bran replied.

“You don’t even have you’re hair combed.” Wil said.

“I’ll be ready soon, Wil. It’s not the end of the world if we aren’t perfectly on time.” Bran said with a sigh.

“Okay, sorry geez.” Wil rolled his eyes, plopping down on Bran’s bed and picking up a magazine to read.

“Ready yet?” Wil called from the bedroom after a while, “We’ve got to get going, Bran!”

Bran opened the bathroom door, stepping out into the hallway and walking into Bran’s bedroom, where Wilson was sitting on the bed.

“Do you like?” Bran asked, wearing the same outfit as Wil.

“Twins!” Wil exclaimed. “Smile!” He said, holding up a Polaroid camera, and taking Bran’s picture.

“Now one of you.” Bran said, standing up and grabbing the camera from Wil. “Pose… pose again, okay, smile.” He said, taking a few photos.

The two stepped in front of Bran’s mirror, starring at themselves for a moment.

“Do we look stupid?” Wil asked.

“I do, you look hot though.”

“I know, I just wanted you to tell me.”

“So you think I look stupid?” Bran said.

“Yea.”

Bran chuckled, nudging Wil in the side.

“Can you suck me into your vacuum and carry me around for the rest of the night if it is too loud and terrifying?” Wil asked.

“No, but I can suck you.” Bran replied.

“What?”

“Huh?”

“You’re sure you’re parents won’t be home?” Wil asked.

“They’re never home on Halloween, they hate kids. They’re not gonna know, don’t worry.”

“Okay.”

“Come on, we’re gonna be late!” Bran said, grabbing Wil by the hand and leading him out the front door and into his truck.

“Where are we going again?” Wil asked.

“Stacy’s house.” Bran replied, pulling out onto the street.

“I think she hates me though.” Wil said.

“Why?”

“I don’t know, she always stares at me weird.”

“Everyone stares at you weird Wil, it’s fine.”

Wil rolled his eyes.

“It’s gonna be fun. And we will probably get made fun of but who cares.” Bran said.

“I care.”

“Fine, I‘ll just beat anyone who tried to mess with you.”

“Okay.” Wil agreed.

“Mike, we have to go soon.” Will had told Mike, ten minutes prior.

It was almost nine twenty, and Mike still wasn’t even in his costume. Out of all the halloween they’d done, their lack of effort in this one was at an all time high.

Will knew they were probably going to get judged, laughed at, and probably bullied. But for old times’ sake, they’d all decided to remake their ghostbusters outfit from back when they were in 8th grade.

Those memories weren’t really good ones, given the whole Upside down thing, but Will could live with it if it made Mike happy. After all, they were supposed to go “crazy together”. Will let out a sarcastic snort at the thought.

Maybe Will was just being selfish. Now was not the time. Especially since Lucas and Dustin had been so cheerful when they made the plans.

“Mike, I hope you don’t get wasted tonight.” Will said, though it was no use. Dustin, Lucas, and Mike had been very intent on enjoying their first party ever. Will was a little worried though. He’s never been one to particularly enjoy alcohol - courtesy of his dad - and he didn’t enjoy being around drunk people all the time.

And Mike was really starting to get on his nerves.

“Mike!” Will called. “Hurry up!” He leaned against the doorframe and fiddled with his sleeve.

Standing by the doorway in his full ghostbusters costume, this time store-bought and not lovingly crafted by his mother’s hands, he felt a little like a kid again. But not the scared, skittish person he’d been before. More like a gut-wrenching wave of nostalgia.

It was the smell too. That halloween in 8th grade had carried such a strong smell of the maple leaves falling outside, the sharp bite in the air, and the synthetic smell of the brand new costumes. It smelled like home…

At nine thirty five, Mike finally came shuffling down his staircase with his costume dangling half off, and his hair a mess.

“Hi, Will, I’m,” He stumbled. “ready to go!”

Will guessed he was just happy to look a mess.

“Come here.” Will grabbed Mike by his shoulders, adjusting the brown fabric of his costume and re-styling his hair as best he could with his fingers.

Mike kept shifting and moving around, but finally, they were ready to go, and could probably show up fashionably late, which could probably be taken as a good thing.

“Wait - let’s take photos, you know? For old times sake?” Will suggested, remembering exactly how his halloween had started before.

“Okay.”

Mike held still for a few photos, smiling.

“Okay, okay, let’s go!” Will cheered, excited to get on with the night.
