Work Text:
Goole had woken up, he had forgotten everything, and yet an outstretched hand had introduced themselves, and told him he had a new purpose; to judge and fix the corrupt. He had retained nothing of his old self, and so this mission would be his new, and only, life’s purpose.
Every mission would be to rewrite time by watching what happened and allowing those to blame to be punished.
It had been a ritual, he arrived at the scene, he understood everything and what he needed to do. Though, everything he felt was dull. From his randomly appearing knowledge, he should be the very people he put down with all the power he has. He knows so much, yet nothing about himself at all, or what he is there.
His previous task was to sort out Eva Smith, he didn’t feel disgust at what they had done, he really doesn’t feel much at all.
Justice is served, and yet he isn’t bothered.
He is The Inspector.
His next task was to fix a corrupt leader, Macbeth. The inspector is to source his problems and stop him from branching, spreading the corruption. The Inspector had recalled that Macbeth wanted power, his ambition had lead him to become this tyrant, and he lead his wife with him, though she cannot handle the mental strain. Macbeth had even gone against the religion, against the Divine Rite. He must be evil, he must be inspected.
The Inspector goes back to the time to the memory that is placed in his mind, in which Macbeth’s corruption begins; when he talks to the women. Goole listened in, watching what was going down. The Inspector had discovered something he had yet to know, that these women spoke in rhyme, in a strange pentameter. What made them like this.
Goole heard the word ‘witches’ uttered, and then he was confused. What was a witch? Why is he familiar to the term yet out of reach from his current mind?
Macbeth and Banquo walk away, and The Inspector watches the witches for a while longer. The three daunting witches turn, and speak in a mass ‘Who are you?’
The Inspector turns, not expecting the presence of another being, and sees… no one. The witches were talking to him. But how? This was a memory.
The witches grin, their yellowed and blackened tipped teeth, daggers embedded in their corroding gums gleam in the now unsettling light of the once lit sun. The witches eyes almost begin to soften, before they speak.
‘It has already begun, Macbeth cannot escape his fate. He will become king, you cannot change fate’
The witches grin begins to melt, a foul smell invades the once fair air as their skins sizzles, bubbling as they drip onto the ground, a red slurry remaining.
The Inspector returns to his current state, where he is watching Lady Macbeth beg the Evil Spirits to remove her if the milk of human kindness.
The Corruption had already spread.
The Inspector stays still, wondering on what to do in his translucent state. Life around him continues, yet he remains frozen. Lady Macbeth speaks the words of appearing to be the flower and yet to remain the serpent underneath. King Duncan arrives through the door, which wakes The Inspector.
He is The Inspector.
He must stop the corrupt.
He watches them. Lady Macbeth so confident, yet Macbeth so afraid. Macbeth was noble and brave, why is he so afraid now? The Inspector realises he has been frozen again, as he watched the blood pool from under Duncan, the dagger still imbedded. Lady Macbeth comes in and gives the guards the dagger, blood over both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s hand.
The Inspector looks at Macbeth’s face and feels something, something he felt briefly for Sheila. He couldn’t help but compare Macbeth to a baby, an innocent baby in which watched someone so great, someone so inspiring die in front of their eyes. Yet he knew that he was the one that committed this crime. He should not feel anything, but these feeing especially.
After commotion the following day, Macbeth should become the next king, not only as he was a great soldier, but he recently had been appointed as the new Thane. Was he going to corrupt the country too?
He watched for longer, and realised that Banquo may be doing his job for him, as he had confronted Macbeth briefly, He knew.
It wasn’t long until Banquo had been murdered. Macbeth’s own friend. Macbeth felt the guilt of a killer, yet his wife’s words had soothed him. The Inspector decided that he should do something drastic, to scare Macbeth. He wants Macbeth to realise that even if some of the supernatural supports him, not all of them will. So he should introduce Macbeth to a ghost, The ghost his best friend in who he recently murdered, Banquo.
As the royalty sat, Goole did what he did best, impersonating the dead. He became the ghost of Banquo. He allowed himself to drag his feet along the floor, as he sat in Macbeth’s seat. When the King and Queen finally arrived, the panic on King Macbeth was so great. Goole allowed the gory locks on which he currently possessed to sway, allowing some of the blood soaked strands fall to the table, around where Macbeth would eat.
Goole felt a pain, as he covered the left side of his chest. Why did he feel this? Why did he want to stop doing it?
Goole quickly removed himself by floating down through the floor, allowing Macbeth to remain staring after him, and Lady Macbeth uttered harsh words about Macbeth’s masculinity.
Goole lent against the wall, as if this physical structure could ground what he felt. Goole knew this feeling was inconvenient, he couldn’t comprehend what he felt, all he could remember is the way Macbeth’s lips curled, into a look of fear due to Goole himself. Why did he suddenly feel incapable to do this? He wanted Macbeth to know who he was, as him.
Goole had watched Macbeth for a while yet, before switching his attention to Lady Macbeth, she seems so strong and in control right now, it is scary. How can a woman that is not a witch be so powerful, more powerful than the King of Scotland?
Goole couldn’t stop thinking about Macbeth. He knew he needed to stop, he just couldn’t. Goole read a poem aloud. He couldn’t quite remember poems well and how smooth they sound coming out of his mouth, or the gentle flow a poem carries him.
He read a romance poem by which it was addressed by a man, to a man. The had been executed together for being in a relationship, but before he did, he wrote sweet words, so his partner could be sent gently down, wings formed from the words on the page, allowing him to go to heaven even with the compression of society, wanting him to go to hell. If was heart reaching. Love is a strange concept, one which Goole himself cannot understand unless he felt it.
Goole watched, Lady Macbeth and Macbeth had grown further apart. Lady Macbeth was having mental strain. She would wonder around at night, mumbling words on how dirty she was, how unclean she was from the corrupt spread by the witches. It wasn’t Macbeth or her fault that the witches had infected them with the evil of supernatural. It is only natural for human, when secured power, to become less caring, and more ambitious. Goole felt something, he thinks was sadness. He will never be able to feel such a thing, to feel love. Yet he can feel sadness, so maybe he can. He feels strange around Macbeth, and until he understands what it is, he feels uncomfortable in taking extreme action.
Lady Macbeth takes her own life. Corrupting leaves everything dead, but Goole can’t help but feel bad. He has done nothing. She was corrupted but it wasn’t by her own nature. He must talk to Macbeth. Goole seeks Macbeth, again, he is speaking with the Witches.
‘Greetings, Goole’ The witches announce his presence as is he had always been there.
Macbeth turns, and looks at the now visible Inspector. Macbeth’s eyes widen, his gaze flicks to witches before he speaks.
‘And who may you be? Bow to your king’
Goole glances at Macbeth and holds his gaze. He was lost, for once in his life. He didn’t understand how he felt, he didn’t know what to do, he didn’t know who to blame. Macbeth’s face flushes slightly, his mouth parts.
‘Goole’ The Inspector says ‘I am royalty from another county. I apologise’ Goole bows down to Macbeth, his hair covering his face, allowing his own flush to be hidden.
If Goole was analysing how he felt as if he was another person to who he had to fix, he would be saying they felt something likeable towards Macbeth. But he was The Inspector. He didn’t feel these types of things, especially not towards someone so evil.
Goole stood up straight.
‘Macbeth, you must put an end to this madness, it is too great, too much’
Macbeth’s eyes squint.
‘You just understand’ Macbeth says ‘I cannot. I must keep my power, as the Great King of Scotland’
Goole raises his own dagger in which he keeps on himself.
‘You must die then’
The witches slither infront of Macbeth and flash their wicked grin.
The Inspector’s heart is beating, though he isn’t scared. The witches disappear.
Macbeth stands and looks at him. He reaches for his own sword, though his sword was missing, as Goole had taken it earlier. Macbeth was defenceless, and had no weapon.
He could not win.
Macbeth smiled sadly.
‘I never even got to be who i was suppose to be. I was the great Thane, now the King, and yet the power is not that great. I fought so hard, as i had wanted to be royalty, wanted to be something more than a representative of this country. I wanted to be the head of it. To do so would mean I had to surpass expectations. I had gotten a wife. I guess our love was so great because it was not true was, it was more best friends. I hadn’t loved her beyond a friend. She knew that if my masculinity would have slipped, I would easily reveal what i truly was. We tried for children, and yet they couldn’t flourish, they couldn’t live. I have nothing i wanted more than… a man to love, and so i became king, to regain some power of my life.’ He chuckles to himself, as if talking to his friend.
‘I can read people, Goole. You are in love. At first i thought it was the witches but it isn’t, is it? It’s me’
The Inspector can only stare at him. He knew it was true, he had been judging others, and yet forgot to inspect himself.
Goole’s grip around the dagger got firmer as he knew what he needed to do.
‘I need to kill you-‘
‘Join me, Goole. Please’
Macbeth was begging the inspector to go with him… would he be less corrupt? All he had to do was remove him from his throne and all would be success. He wanted more than to be with Macbeth, but he had to complete the mission. He could trade the throne for himself.
‘Macbeth, was can be together, but you must give up the throne. You will loose it anyway soon’
‘You think? The witches told me my prophecies, that I can only be killed by man born, and that only when the forest move-‘
‘Macbeth, I know what is going to happen. They will cut the trees down and use them as disguise, appearing that the trees are moving’
‘Yet everyone is born from a women’
‘Some are born by caesarian, foolish Macbeth’ Goole rubs his hand over his own face.
‘Macbeth, me, or death-‘
‘You, Goole… I love you’
The dagger fell from his hand. Goole finally understood, what he felt was love.
‘I love you too, Macbeth’
