I wondered if I was born to know the blueprints of you

Summary:

The Gillory-Karadec family grows by one

Notes:

—But when I saw your face, I wondered if architecture was sleeping latent in my bones. I wondered if I was born to know the blueprints of you.
Caitlyn Siehl, from What We Buried; "The Architect"

Happy birthday to me. In celebration I give you a little extra chapter for this series while I continue to work on the longer fic I have coming for these two.

This is part of a series, but can also be read completely as a stand-alone :)

No chapter/fic specific song this time around, but I did make a wholeass playlist for these two on Spotify if you want to check it out!

Work Text:

"Are you sure you don't need any help there?" Calling out, Adam paced around the room with a buzzing nervous energy filling him from head to toes. He was both excited and nervous, but also no doubt starting to wear down a trail on the floor. If Morgan were to see him right now she would laugh and tell him to stop and calm down, but he simply couldn't contain himself. She could probably hear him through the door, but let him get through it in his own way.

"I'm urinating on a stick—I think I can handle this alone." He could almost see her roll her eyes in exasperation as she responded to him through the bathroom door. The response alleviated some of the nervous energy he was feeling and he couldn't help but smile.

"Of course." Trying to calm himself down before the bathroom door opened, he sat down on the bed. "How accurate are these things, anyways?"

"Very." Morgan responded as she walked out of their shared bathroom and set down the pregnancy test on a dresser opposite of their bed and picked up a pair of earrings. She seemed entirely too calm in his eyes, especially when compared to the near overwhelmingness he was currently feeling.

"How are you this calm?" He couldn’t help but ask.

"I've been down this road before a few times already." Turning to look at him, she responded with an easy grin. "Three kids, remember?"

How could he ever forget? He'd been there watching them grow and he loved and cared for them like they were his own. Even if Morgan was pregnant, it would not change anything. The thought of their family growing made a warmth bloom in his chest as he smiled. There was nothing he wouldn't do for his family.

"You know what, I know exactly when this happened."

"With the amount of sex we've been having lately, I'd say it's pretty hard to say when we conceived." Shooting him down, she responded with a grin wide on her face.

Though he knew her to be completely right on that part, he could hardly be blamed for being unable to keep his hands off of her. They'd even recently celebrated their anniversary, and with each passing day he found himself even more in love with Morgan and the life they had built together. With two out of three kids living elsewhere for school, their house had turned more quiet and it was starting to become even easier to sneak in private moments together.

Unable to keep himself still due to the nervous energy coursing through him, he got up from the bed, made his way over to Morgan and snaked his arms around her waist, placing gentle kisses on her neck. "It was that night in the kitchen after the bottle of Brunello."

Morgan only laughed in return and placed in the second earring as his hands moved on top of her stomach, already placing his hopes on a future with their child. He knew that Ava and Ellis would freak out when they would be calling them to share the news and immediately start planning respective vacations to come back home. It would be nice to see them again—the house had grown a lot quieter from the near chaos it had once been with only Chloe around anymore, and even she spent more time with her friends than at home.

"Maybe you should give the stick a shake," he said between the kisses he couldn't help but place on her neckline, enjoying the appreciative hums he got in response. They would have to head to work soon, but maybe he could sneak in a moment with only two of them. Something to celebrate the child that was coming.

“You can’t rush it. It takes a few minutes for the results to appear.” She reminded him again, but he simply couldn’t wait.

His phone ringing on his nightstand broke the moment between them, pulling him back to reality with work reminding of itself to him. Breaking off, he walked up to the side of the bed, picking up the phone. Another day, another murder, another scene that they needed to go check out before heading to the precinct.

"Alright, we'll be there. Bye." Ending the call, he set the phone back down on the nightstand. He would also need to finish getting ready before they would head out. The thought of it made him frown. Now that Morgan was no doubt pregnant, things would have to change.

"Soto called.” He started explaining as he got off the phone. “A gallery owner was found dead during a small and private exhibit opening." Relaying the news to Morgan, he could see the case already catching her attention.

"Listen, you have to take it easy now that you're pregnant, okay?"

"Hey, we don't even know if I'm pregnant yet," she immediately protested in return.

The frown settling on his face along with the protest ready on his lips and the concerns he had for her and the baby's well-being were forgotten immediately as Morgan picked up the pregnancy test and let out a sound of delight. His attention was instinctively drawn to her face to see if she was alright and then down to the stick on her hand.

"It's a plus sign—I'm pregnant!"

All his nervous energy dissipated in that very moment, only to be replaced with immense joy. It was something they'd both been suspicious of for a while now. She’d changed her morning coffees into tea due to the smell of coffee making her nauseous, often fallen asleep next to him on the couch by the 10PM news and especially with the way he'd had to constantly start bringing Morgan something to snack on along with her near constantly raiding the kitchen and vending machine at the precinct. The signs had all been there and now it was fully confirmed. She was pregnant, their family was growing with another one.

"We're having a baby." His heart beating a million miles a minute from the excitement coursing through his veins, he couldn't help but smile wide. He felt like the luckiest man on earth.

"We're having a baby!" Morgan repeated along with him, looking just as excited as he felt.

Quickly making his way over to her, Adam swooped her into his arms, placing a kiss on her lips. He could hardly believe it was true. They'd talked about it before–the possibility of her becoming pregnant, and she'd agreed that if it were to happen then she wouldn't mind one more. It was something they hadn't really talked or thought about afterwards, making this pregnancy a happy accident that he would gladly have in their lives.

"I love you." He couldn't help but say, over and over again every day. It had taken them a while to get to this point in their lives, but everything had been more than worth it and he would do it all over again for her, for this life, for this family.

"I love you, too." She responded with a wide smile of her own and a look that told him that she no doubt knew what he was thinking of. He didn't mind, instead reveling in their shared love and happiness.

"We have to tell people, I need to—" Taking a step back, his hands still on her hands, he was excited to tell their friends the happy news.

"No no no, wait. Calm down." Interrupting his thoughts, Morgan stopped him, her voice dropping to a calmer tone as she continued. "I want this to be between us for now. Let's wait for a while before telling everyone."

"Of course." Toning his excitement down slightly, he understood completely. Whatever she wanted.

Dropping down to one knee, he placed his hands around her stomach, the smile still wide on his face. There was no visible bump yet, just a flat stomach that he'd spent hours worshiping before—one such drunken night that had even led them to their current situation. He couldn't wait to see it grow along with their child. It felt so foreign to think of it, yet he was still very excited for it.

"Listen to me, baby—it's just us for now. Me, your mom and your siblings who will be very thrilled to meet you. But we have to be quiet—no telling others." His voice low, barely above a whisper, he talked to the child.

"We're going to our first crime scene," Morgan continued, placing her hands above his and looking down at her stomach, the excitement and joy clear on her tone of voice as she spoke.

"Yeah, we're going to our first—No. Absolutely not." His tone dropped immediately from the shared excitement, remembering what he'd wanted to talk about with her regarding the pregnancy. He stood back up to face her before continuing, "you need to start being careful, Morgan. You're pregnant."

"Don't be irrational, there's absolutely nothing that could happen to me."

"At the murder scene? Of course not. There's tons of officers around to keep an eye on the place, but after that, when we start going to places and meeting potential suspects, the possibility of something happening to you grows." Not budging from his opinion, he frowned. He simply wanted her and the baby to be safe. Even if she was just a consultant this was a dangerous line of job. "You should take it easy now."

"I'm not taking it easy. I'll be perfectly fine, especially since I won't be leaving your side." Morgan started and he could start feeling the cracks in his defense, only sighing in response to her. Taking a hold of his hands and looking directly into his eyes, she continued, completely knowing his weaknesses. "After all I know you won't let anything happen to us."

He let out a groan, unable to resist her pleading face. He didn't even know that she could pull off a face like that—it was like saying no to a puppy, which meant that she'd only been saving her hardest hitting tactics for the toughest battles against him.

"Fine. But you have to promise to stay next to me and be careful."

"Of course," she responded with a victory grin. He'd started headstrong only to completely lose to her. "You know I will."

Except he knew that she necessarily wouldn't. For a moment he wondered how he would survive this pregnancy, knowing Morgan as well as he did, but maybe she'd actually follow her promise and be more careful now. He knew that she would be a handful even now, but that was also a part of her that he had fallen for.

Notes:

This was supposed to be a short under 1k words blurb, but it kinda grew along the way. I hope you enjoyed it!
