Old Feeling & Old Memories

Summary:

Jyugo's life is full of holes and mysteries; some are empty, some are partially empty, and some are full but not entirely pleasant. However, Jyugo does remember some of his childhood, and looking back, he's not sure how to feel about it.

(This is a self-indulgent fanfic. I know how the story ends, and I wanted to have some fun with this idea.)

This work updates 1-2 chapters every Monday.

This version of the story has been left; there is a reprised version that is longer and will be updated with better writing and longer chapters.

Notes:

This work is a piece of fiction that is not completely canon-compliant and is simply self-indulgent.

Warning: Mention of head trauma, unsympathetic parenting, childhood trauma

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Chapter 1: Night Time Thoughts

Chapter Text

Nights at Nanba prison were about what you'd expect, corridors filled with the sound of inmates snoring and guards walking around the halls doing their rounds.

Some people slept easier than others, Jyugo tossed and turned in his sleep feeling restless, it had been two hours and yet sleep seemed to be completely off the table for him as it was for most nights, he sighed as he got up from his futon which was located furthest from his cellmates on the right side of the cell they all occupied somehow Uno, Rock and Nico had somehow managed to be in a sort of cuddle pile.

Nico was in the middle of the group, Rock was on the right outside of the pile and lastly Uno was on the left outer part the pile, Jyugo looked at them with a plain look at the sight in front of him, his cellmates had always been more outwardly with their emotions and physical affection, piles like the one they created now weren't a very rare sight in their cell and sometimes just accrued since they all moved or acted differently in their sleep and with Rock and Nico benign the two who sleep heavier than Uno and Jyugo.

Jyugo sighed again. He went into the bathroom connected to the cell, he turned on the lights and looked in the mirror calmly, he noticed the bags under his eyes had become darker over the past few three days; he splashed cold water onto his face to try and help him feel less groggy, before leaving the bathroom.

Jyugo looked back at his cellmates and smiled, ‘This feels familiar when it comes to them, but looking back, it feels foreign compared to when I was younger…..I wonder how Rokudo and Miyazuki are doing ... Do they miss me?’ Jyugo thought as he lay back down on his futon, staring up at the ceiling of their small yet homey cell. Jyugo took a deep breath as he closed his eyes.

Jyugo come here” Mikazuki said, Jyugo got up from his spot on the floor of the small warehouse hideout he, Rokudo and Mikazuki had been staying at for the past few days; Mikazuki looked down at the small eight year old boy in front of him, he was small for his age, with very messy black hair that hadn't been handled properly, a black slightly oversized jacket and simple black shorts with black shoes, all black and all simple and easy to blend at night if necessary.

Miyazuki motioned for Jyugo to follow him; they left the warehouse and walked through the alleyways of Osaka before finally finding him.

Rokudo, a tall, pale figure covered in stitches, with short, shaggy black hair, a black one-piece jumpsuit, and, lastly, the same heterochromia-changing eyes his son had, with one key difference: he had a tattoo of his inmate number on his right sclera.

Rokudo was laying down in an alleyway next to a rundown motel, he was asleep laying atop a pile of trash calmly as if he wasn't a wanted fugitive on the run, with a child no less, “Carless as usual” Miyazuki said before raising his leg slightly and slamming it down on top of Rokudo stomach, Rokudo woke with a couch and a groan as he held his side slightly “Ah, jeez MIyazuki, what was that for?” Rokudo said as he slowly got up, still holding his side.
“You're a moron, that's simple enough of a reason” Miyazuki said plainly as if it was a basic fact of life “Jyugo stop standing behind me it makes you an easy target, your to weak to defend yourself” Miyazuki said Jyugo did as he was told without complaint or hesitancy and stood between the two only prominent adults in his life, Jyugo looked up at his father who didn't give him any mind.

The two adults continued to talk amongst themselves as all three of them walked back to the warehouse they were staying at, Jyugo was still between to two of them however his mind was else where, he wanted to look around but knew that Miyazuki would get angry, and when he got angry he was scary Jyugo shook his head slightly; His father wasn't one to even show anger as far as Jyugo could tell he wasn't sure his father could feel angry, he never cared when Jyugo wandered off only ever telling him not to get killed.

They all arrived at the warehouse and looked around to ensure that no one else was near by or inside, once the coast was clear Rokudo took a spot underneath a window and prepared himself to sleep once more 'He sleeps a lot' Jyugo thought as he walked over to a corner near Rokudo, Miyazuki sighed at Rokudo's action and simply choose to go observe the area from the roof as he always does.

Jyugo stared up at the ceiling of the warehouse, simple gray and slightly rusted, nothing new, similar to all the other warehouses they've hidden out in before.

Jyugo woke up with a groan as the sunlight from the cell's singular window shone down on him. He rolled over and saw that his cellmates were still in their small pile. He considered joining them but decided against it and simply lay there on his side, enjoying the quiet peace in their small cell before the wake-up call.

A wake-up call came, and everyone arose from their respective spots on the floor, as they got ready for a new day, or, of course, breakfast came after everyone was dressed and had their morning routines finished.

Cell thirteen walked throughout the halls of building thirteen as Seitaro lead them all to the messhall for breakfast, Rock Uno and Nico where talking to one another while Jyugo was lost in thought over his dream while walking on Uno's right, they arrived at the messhall ‘I wonder what happened to them after Vegas’ Jyugo thought recalling that he had run into his father while with the others during a breakout in Vegas but didn't really realize it till after words do to being focused on catching up with his cellmates, then again it's not as if Rokudo had attempted to talk let alone stop him, he simply let him go like he always did.

The all got their food and sat down at their typical table and the conversations continued as they always did with all four of our resident inmates talk about anything and everything, Nico talked about a fight anime he had watched and how he wanted to copy the fighting style while training with Upa, Rock talked about how the food despite being similar to last months meal has some changes that made it take different and unique, Uno talked about going to the game room to hang out with the other inmates they had befriended for the afternoon, Jyugo simply listened and only commented here and there, enjoying his cellmates lively nature and conversations.

‘Breakfast's where never this fun back then’ Jyugo though ‘It was quiet and lonely, was that normal……..or where was that just our normal’ Jyugo though as he took a bite of his breakfast recalling how whenever he woke up they didn't typically eat breakfast and when they did, he was either alone or no one spoke, there wasn't much to say, it was a routine, a chaotic one many times but one that happened regardless, looking back Jyugo frown slightly, this feeling no matter how many times he’s felt it, he felt relaxed and happy while being with his cellmates, they talked to him and they listened to him but his family, they were different they cared in their own ways but conversations between him them where simple, never something deep, or very personal, they simply tried to survive considering the situations they found themselves in on a daily basis ‘Would they ask me about how iv been….if they could see me now after so long’ Jyugo though as he simply picked at his food ‘Probably not’ He sighed and handed his food to Rock claiming he had felt full, Rock accepted with no hesitation.

‘It's too early for this….it doesn't matter anyway,’ Jyugo thought as he continued to listen to his cellmates' morning chatter.
