Notes:

Hello! This is my first fic and I hope to add more selection for the Team Fortress 2 fanfiction community! I will plan on somewhat regular updates and I hope to branch out into self insert fics in the near future.

This chapter centers around the introduction of the Mechanic to the reader and the 9 mercenaries.

Work Text:

It was an average day for the mercenaries on the RED team. They didn’t have any scheduled missions that day and were all chatting with each other and playing cards in the rec room. There started to be talk about a new addition to the RED team, not as a mercenary but as an additional pair of hands. All the mercenaries waited for when this new teammate would reveal themselves. After some time there was a knock on the Mann Co. base’s door. Spy who was informed of the new teammate opened the door… Standing on the other side was a younger woman, she had dark brown medium length hair draping off her shoulder and a few boxes in her arms.

“Ahh, you must be that new mechanic Mann Co. hired.” The tall frenchman said as he looked at her with an almost surprised glare. The young woman gives the man a nod as a response. “Well then follow me, I’ll lead you to the other mercenaries.” He led the woman around the base to the rec room. Once the both of them reached the rec room, the tall Frenchman directed all the mercenaries' attention to the young woman.

All the mercenaries stopped what they were doing to look towards the new face.

“You must be my new assistant.” The man in the yellow safety hat said. The man looked like some kind of Engineer. The tall Frenchman looked down towards her “Now what was your name mademoiselle?”. The woman quickly responded to the man, “My name is Christine.” She gave the man a kind smile hoping he would introduce her to the other mercenaries. “This young woman here is Christine, she will be our new vehicle mechanic and an assistant for Engineer.” The man explains. Christine starts to speak up. “Hello he is right, I’ll be the new mechanic. I hope to be a help around here from now on.” She smiles and waves at all the men, she locks eyes with a young man wearing a baseball cap and she gives him a slight smile. Which is quickly reciprocated.

“Our new mechanic huh? My dear you look rather young to be a mechanic…” The German man in a doctor's coat says while adjusting his glasses to get a better look at her. “Oh yes I get that a lot.” She chuckles, “I’m 24.”. The German man nodded his head. “24 is quite a young age for a woman to be working here. Especially such a dangerous job.” He says as a response. “Don’t worry, I’m well aware of the dangers of a job like this. But fixing machines and vehicles is simply what I do best.” She attempts to reassure the man that she will do her job effortlessly.

“Huh… Never seen a girl mechanic before.” The young man in the baseball cap said with a strong Boston accent while observing Christine. He was rather curious about this new teammate. “Well we  happen to be rare but I can assure you we do exist.” She says with a sweet smile. It seems like that wasn’t a sure enough answer and that a girl mechanic was a whole new concept to the young man, let alone an attractive one…

“Now I’d hate to cut the conversation short but does anyone know where room 11 is? That’s where I’ll be moving into.” She looks around the base from where she is at. “Ahh yes it’s the fourth door down the hall over there.” The man in the yellow hardhat gestured to a hallway on the right side of the base. “Hey Scout, how about you help this young lady move her things in?” The man suggested. Scout’s face lit up a bit at the mention of his name. He looked pretty happy to help Christine move in and maybe get to know her more. “Yeah sure I’ll see what I can do.” Scout said while adjusting his headset. He started to walk towards the hallway and he tilted his head gesturing for Christine to follow him.

The two of them walk outside to Christine's car to unload all her boxes. “Thanks for the help,” She grabs a box out of the trunk of the car. “I take it your name is Scout?” She says as she remembers what the man with the yellow hardhat said. “My real name's Jeremey but most people here call me Scout.” He said as he picked up a few boxes. “Is Scout some kind of code name or work name?” She asked him. “Well sorta” He chuckled a bit. “Most of the mercenaries here get some kind of alias to go by. The man who greeted you was Spy and the man in the yellow hardhat was Engineer.” Scout explained. Christine looked kind of confused but she's starting to get it. Scout chuckles at her “Don’t worry I’m sure you’ll get it soon” He said. The both of them walk towards Christine's new room.

Once they reached her room she quickly unlocked the door. On the other side of the door lied an empty room with a closet and bathroom attached. “Well damn, this is nicer than my room.” Scout joked as he placed the boxes filling his arms on the ground. He dusted off his palms. “So I assume all of the mercenaries live here?” She asked as she placed down the boxes next to the ones Scout placed. “Yeah you’d be correct. The only people who don’t live here are Miss Pauling and the Administrator but they stop by every once in a while” Scout took a good look around the empty room.

“Well that should be all the boxes. Thanks for all the help Scout.” She gave him a sweet smile. “Yeah, don't sweat it.” He starts to walk away. “Wait real quick…” She stops him. “Is there anything I should know about working here?” She asked, she seems to be quite curious. Scout is quiet for a second trying to come up with an answer. “Well… Just don’t go down into the basement, that's where Medic does all his experiments and trust me it ain’t pretty.”. Christine nods her head even though she is a bit concerned about what lies in the basement. “Huh… Alrighty then…”

Scout then speaks up once more. “Oh and do a favor for me…”. Christine tilts her head wondering what the favor could be. “Yes?”. Scout speaks up again “Just don’t believe a single thing Spy or Demoman has to say about me? Alright?”. Christine nods her head and smiles. “Yeah you got it.”  It’s quite clear to Christine that Scout doesn’t want to look bad in front of her and she chuckles a bit to herself. “Well I’ll see you around Scout.” Christine waves at him with a warm smile. “Later, Chrissy.” He walks off and closes the door to her new room. Christine smiles at him calling her ‘Chrissy’ and sits down on her unmade bed.

She starts to think about her interaction with Scout and she subconsciously smiles. It seems like she’s growing quite fond of the Boston boy and that he is growing fond of her as well. She wonders what kind of friendship they might have in the future or even potentially more than a friendship…
