Chapter Text
Everyone wants power here.
The power to protect themselves or their friends, the power to rule over others, the power to have the chance of tasting freedom. Different people have different notions, ideals and ideas of power.
I find it a recurring theme that those considered strong - fuelled by desire - take more and more power from those considered weak. I've seen that even the bonds of friendships that have lasted years, have been easily broken by the desire for power.
Note, I don't think that power itself is inherently evil. Yes, there are things that do fit the description of being "inherently evil", but power alone is not one of them. It just so happens that those with power turn out to be oppressive or are considered evil. But power doesn't have a will of its own. It doesn't have the choice on who utilizes it or not. It doesn't need pity, it doesn't need gifts. It doesn't even need to exist. It just does.
If there was a choice - if power was a person - then I don't think there's any way that it would work. People have their own morals, influenced by others with preconceived notions or desires. It's a concept. A concept chased by those with ambitions and dreams.
There are many different examples showcasing the many different types of power on this server.
"EGG! Are you still down there? You're the one who wanted to go fishing today y'know!" Wemmbu's distinctive voice called out from above, interrupting Eggchan's thoughts. You down here?" the distinct voice of Wemmbu called out, interrupting Eggchan's thoughts. He closed the book, leaving the quill inside and placing it back into its place in his bookshelf.
He sighed, closing the book and placing its quill to mark where he left off for when he returned. He placed it back onto his bookshelf - which was getting close to being full. Maybe he could get another one today after he and Wemmbu finished fishing?
Egg made his way upstairs to see an impatient Wemmbu lying across the floor.
"Dude what are you doing?"
Wemmbu shot up, his boredom ceasing in an instant. "Oh hey bro you're here. Finally, I was just about to leave you behind." He joked.
He rolled his eye at him, offering a hand so that Wemmbu could stand up.
"You lead the way bro." Egg paused for a moment, remembering that he also needed more space for more books. "Oh also can we take a detour on the way back?"
"Uhh sure, why?"
"I need more bookshelves."
"Again? We literally bought 3 last week!"
"I write a lot okay! I find a lot of things interesting…"
Wemmbu rolled his eyes. Yet despite his seemingly annoyed demeanour, he always agreed to get the bookshelves with Egg.
The two of them made their way to their favourite fishing pond. Wemmbu made triple sure this time that he wasn't carrying any of his orbital nukes in his hot-bar; he took the enchanted fishing rod that Egg had let him borrow for the day. He made 100 percent sure every time they went fishing, since neither of them wanted to re-experience the… incident. Power like his could be used at any time, by anyone who knew how to use it. Whether on purpose or on accident. Almost killing Egg was not worth being lazy with it like he had been before.
Wemmbu didn't think of his power as a gift, or as something completely unattainable. He knew deep down that his power was borrowed; that anyone who searched for it would be able to gain it. He knew it could be stolen as easily as stealing toys from a child. He knew his own flaws and incapability. He knew very well how weak he really was. But not many on the server were dedicated enough like he was to protect those he cared about. He kept the orbitals as insurance. Sure, now he had an unlimited amount, but there was no point if he accidentally endangered Egg with them for the sake of having fun. Now, he just wanted a relatively peaceful life on the server. He knew that he would never truly get that - even whilst faking his identity, people still interfered with him. The previous, many shows of power from him lead to people wanting to take it from him. He could accept that, because it was something he has caused. But he wouldn't let it cause the death of another person he cared about.
Once again, Egg "won" their unspoken battle of who could fish the most, and the rarest items. He had a strange ability that made rare loot always gravitate towards him. Egg felt a small bit of joy every time he won. It wasn't like he needed to win, nor did either of them need to make this a challenge. But he still enjoyed whatever wins the universe granted him.
The two of them finished and packed up, ready to venture to merchant city again.
They were quiet for a while on the road. Not an unusual silence, since the two had been friends for such a long time that, any silence that fell between them usually never awkward. Unless it was after some kind of argument. But even then, it never took long for them to make up.
Egg interrupted the quiet. "Hey, Wem?"
"Yeah? What's up?"
A few times, Egg had wondered if staying alongside Wemmbu was the right choice. It wasn't a thought that came willingly, but it still appeared nonetheless. Of course, he was grateful for Wemmbu for even inviting him onto a server like this. And it wasn't his fault that the nature of the players tended to be to become the strongest. But at times - especially when Egg's life was in the most danger - he wondered if it would even be worth continuing his journeys with Wemmbu. He knew Wemmbu would probably… or at least, eventually, accept the decision of no longer travelling together if he ever made it. However, each time he realised he didn't care whether or not his life was in danger. Wemmbu had the power to protect them both, no matter what.
Egg trusted his best friend.
"We can get more books as well right?"
Wemmbu sighed with a smile. "Sure Egg, I guess we can get you more books too."
An unwavering vow of trust had been forged since the day they became each other's best friend.
No mere concept such as power could break it.
