Chapter 1: New beginnings

Chapter Text

You've moved into a new town, wanting to get away from the stress of the big city. All the hustle and bustle was just too much for you and you felt it was time for a change.

So you found a job in a far off rural town and got the nearest train down there. It's not a fancy job, just a simple bartending job but it payed well enough and the rent there was relatively cheap, which wasn't much considering how much you payed back in the city.

You stepped off of the platform and breathed in, like they did in the movies. It was symbolic, in a weird way. The area had a strange, metallic smell to the air, not the Earthy smell you were expecting.

You shrugged it off, rationalising that it was probably just the train station smelling a bit off. You're no stranger to how public transport smells.

But as you step out you find exactly where that metallic smell had come from, and why the rent was so cheap.

None of the denizens were even remotely human.

Some were more humanoid than others, some looking entirely human.

But there was no denying what they all had in common.

Androids, robots, ai's, the lot.

You suddenly felt a small jolt of fear. How could you not? You've seen the movies. You know how stuff like this ends.

Swallowing your fear, you fist your hand into your pocket, holding your new set of keys firmly in your hands as you drag your luggage towards what would be your new home.

You didn't bring much with you, just essentials you can't live without, pillows, toiletries, pictures, books. Everything else either came with the home or was stuff you could easily replace. You were never a sentimental person.

You found the house rather easily, it being the only one with a sold sign out front.

This place must really be in high demand, you think to yourself before unlocking the door and stepping inside. You'd deal with the sold sign later. Right now you just wanted to sit down and relax, maybe brew yourself a cup of tea if this place had a kettle.

The interior was rather simple, a living room with a tv and sofa, a kitchen, bedroom and bathroom, not much else for decoration. But you suppose you can fill it later on when you're more settled in.

You slump against the sofa, practically melting into the fabric. The sudden fatigue from the long journey took ahold of you as you dozed off right where you sat.

You don't know how long you were asleep for until you were awoken by the sound of rhythmic knocking against your door. Bleary eyed, you blinked away the sleep and opened the door.

On the front step stood a short man with an old crt monitor for a head. The display was a simple smile.

You stared blankly at him, and he did the same.

Evidently the two of you weren't expecting the other to look like how they did.

The computer quickly snapped out of his stupor and held out his hand enthusiastically.

"It's been a while since I've seen a human move in! I'm Edgar!"

You tentatively take his hand, shaking it with a lot less enthusiasm as he was.

"...y/n."

Edgar seemed pleased with that as he retracted his hand, stuffing it in his pocket.

"You seem to like living on the edge, huh."

"What do you mean?"

"Do you not know? Some of the residents here...aren't exactly the most friendly towards humans.

You sigh internally.

"Perfect."

"Well! I'll be off now. If you never need something, ask!"

With that Edgar walked away.

What have you signed up for.

You shut the door and sink back into the sofa, suddenly not feeling all so sleepy.

You just had to buy a house in a town full of robots! Some of which who obviously want to kill you. Great going. You just had to save the money and buy the cheapest place.

Next time you won't buy a house off of craigslist, if there even is a next time.

You get up and trudge up to bed.

Tomorrow will be the start of your first shift. Hopefully it won't be your last.

Hope you guys enjoyed! This is the first reader fic I've ever done and it's completely self indulgent but I am open to requests for this! I'll happily write anything that isn't smut (I'll probably try and experiment with writing smut in a different fic)
