Work Text:
The sunset slowly fell over the Tree of Life.
The sky was calm, but the air wasn’t.
Two Guards stood at the border of their lands.
Ahead — the unknown.
Behind — home.
Kion stayed silent.
Rani stepped beside him.
— You’re thinking about it again.
Kion:
— I always think.
Pause.
— I just don’t always say it.
Rani:
— That can be a problem.
He almost smiled.
— I know.
Kion stepped aside.
He said nothing.
Only looked up.
Quietly:
— Grandfather…
Муфаса appeared like wind and fading light.
Mufasa:
— You are not searching for answers.
Kion:
— Then what am I searching for?
Pause.
Mufasa:
— Certainty where it does not exist.
Kion stayed silent.
Mufasa:
— Not everyone who sows doubt is an enemy.
— And not everyone who speaks truth is an ally.
Kion quietly:
— Then how do I lead them?
Mufasa:
— Watch what is born after the choice.
The presence faded.
Silence returned.
Rani stepped closer again.
— You’re not alone in this.
Kion looked at her.
Not as a partner.
But as family.
— I know.
Fuli:
— Are we going or are we standing here until night?
Bunga:
— I vote for “go, but without disaster”.
Beshte:
— That’s not a vote…
Bunga:
— It is in my life.
Chaguo stood aside.
Watching ahead.
Kion:
— You lead.
Pause.
Chaguo:
— Yes.
They moved.
The land slowly changed.
Old stones.
Broken symbols.
And silence that felt unnatural.
Fuli:
— It’s too quiet.
Bunga:
— I miss normal problems already.
Chaguo suddenly stopped.
Ahead — ruins.
But not like before.
Deeper.
Older.
Like the earth itself had been forgotten.
Makini:
— This isn’t just a structure.
— It’s a center.
Kion stepped forward.
The stone beneath his paw faintly glowed.
And then — not a voice.
A memory in the air.
Vision:
A lion.
Young.
Strong.
Askari.
His voice — from the past:
— We cannot destroy what divides us.
— But we can choose what it does to us.
Kion froze.
Rani stepped closer:
— You felt that?
Kion:
— Yes…
Bunga:
— Okay, that was creepy.
Chaguo stared at the ruins.
Longer than the others.
Very quietly:
— You’ve been here before.
Fuli:
— What?
Chaguo didn’t answer.
Kion:
— We go in.
And they stepped forward.
Into the ruins.
The entrance to the ruins was silent.
Too silent.
The stone beneath their paws felt cold — but not normal cold.
Like it wasn’t just stone…
but something that remembered.
Kion walked first.
Rani beside him.
Two Guards — together, but tense.
Fuli scanned the darkness.
— I don’t like this.
Bunga:
— Oh wow. Another place Fuli doesn’t like. Shocking.
Makini stopped.
— This energy… is different.
Rani:
— Energy?
Makini:
— No. Not magic.
Pause.
— Structure.
Kion stopped.
Ahead — the chamber opened.
Massive.
Perfectly circular.
In the center — a stone ring.
Surrounded by symbols.
The same ones they had seen before…
but complete now.
As if everything had finally been gathered here.
Silence grew heavier.
Chaguo stopped.
Longer than usual.
His gaze sharpened.
Kion:
— What do you see?
Pause.
Chaguo:
— What you don’t remember.
Fuli:
— That’s not an answer.
Chaguo quietly:
— Not for you.
Rani stepped forward.
— Something was here.
Makini:
— No…
Pause.
— Someone was in control here.
And then…
the air changed.
Not sound.
Not light.
But feeling.
Like someone was standing in the chamber…
but wasn’t there.
Kion froze.
— Did you feel that?
Fuli:
— Yes.
Beshte:
— Like pressure.
And then — very faintly.
From the stone itself.
Not a voice.
A thought:
“You are not the first.”
Kion tensed.
— Who said that?
Silence.
Again — not a voice.
An echo:
“But you can still understand.”
Makini stepped back.
— That’s not someone now.
— That’s… a recording.
Rani:
— A recording?
Makini:
— An emotional imprint.
Fuli:
— That somehow sounds worse.
Kion looked at the center ring.
— Askari…
And in that moment —
reality “shifted”.
A vision.
A lion.
Аскарі
Young.
But not calm.
Tired.
His voice:
— I couldn’t destroy it.
— Only stop it.
The vision faded.
Silence.
Rani quietly:
— Kion…
Kion:
— This isn’t just history.
And then —
the symbols faintly lit up.
Not fully.
Just reacting.
And then…
very faintly.
Like something far away.
A presence.
Fuli snapped:
— There’s someone else here!
Bunga:
— Great. Ruins with DLC.
Kion:
— Stay calm.
But inside…
he felt it too.
Not a voice.
Not a shape.
Something watching.
And then —
Rani stepped closer.
Quietly:
— You’re not alone here.
Kion looked at her.
And for a moment —
everything softened.
Not a king.
Not a leader.
Just someone… not alone.
And deep in the chamber —
very faintly…
a silent laugh.
Then gone.
The chamber didn’t stay silent for long.
The stone symbols flickered again.
But differently this time.
Not like a signal.
Like a response.
Fuli snapped her head around:
— This isn’t just a feeling. It’s moving!
Beshte stepped forward:
— I can feel something under my paws…
— It’s… shifting!
Kion immediately:
— Everyone together! Don’t split up!
Rani moved beside him.
Calm but firm:
— Night Guard, hold formation.
Baliyo:
— Got it!
Surak (cold, focused):
— Sector control.
Bunga (nervous joking):
— If this is a trap, I’d like to meet the guy who built it so I can not sign his forehead.
Fuli:
— BUNGA!
Bunga:
— What? That’s tactical thinking!
The ground trembled again.
Makini quickly:
— This isn’t destruction!
— It’s activation!
Kion:
— Activation of what?!
Makini:
— The entire system!
And then —
light lines emerged from the walls.
Not rising upward.
But drawing a path.
Rani leaned in:
— That’s a map…
Fuli:
— A map of WHAT?!
Makini:
— A central structure.
And suddenly —
the ground under Beshte dropped.
Beshte:
— Ooooh no no no!
Kion:
— Hold on!
Beshte braced himself.
Fuli jumped in:
— I’ve got you!
Bunga ran over:
— I’m helping too! Because I’m… a team hero!
Beshte:
— ONLY WHEN I’M FALLING?!
Fuli:
— FOCUS!
Together they pulled him up.
Rani calmly:
— Synchronized movement.
— This isn’t a trap… it’s a test.
Kion looked at the symbols.
And again —
he felt it.
Not a voice.
Not a vision.
A presence.
Like someone wasn’t watching them…
but THROUGH them.
He quietly:
— Do you feel that?
Fuli:
— Yes.
Rani:
— Yes.
Bunga:
— I feel like going home.
Kion:
— Then we’re on the right path.
Makini suddenly:
— STOP!
Everyone froze.
She stared at the lines.
— This isn’t just a map.
Pause.
— It’s a behavioral system.
Surak:
— Explain.
Makini:
— It doesn’t respond to strength.
— It responds to how we act together.
Rani slowly:
— A team…
Fuli:
— So if we split, it punishes us?
Makini:
— Not punish.
— Respond.
Kion:
— Then we’ve already proven we can work together.
He stepped forward.
The light stabilized.
Rani softly:
— It’s accepting us.
Bunga:
— I’VE ALWAYS BEEN ACCEPTED BY SYSTEMS!
Fuli:
— You don’t even know what that means.
Bunga:
— Still sounds awesome!
And then —
a shape appeared in the center.
Not a creature.
Not an object.
A projection.
A map of the world.
And on it —
more places like this.
Makini:
— This isn’t one chamber…
Kion:
— There are more.
Rani:
— Across the land.
And then —
very faintly.
The presence again.
Weaker.
Fuli:
— He’s here.
Kion:
— Who?
Silence.
Then — a thought:
“You are moving correctly.”
Everyone tensed.
Bunga quietly:
— Okay… I don’t like this anymore.
Rani stepped closer to Kion.
Quietly:
— You feel it too?
Kion nodded.
And for the first time:
— Yes.
And far in the shadows…
Makali stood still.
He looked down.
Unmoving.
Unblinking.
— They are no longer reacting…
Pause.
— They are learning.
A faint smile.
— Good.
And he vanished into darkness.
The chamber was still glowing.
But no longer stable.
The lines on the walls began to pulse.
Unevenly.
Like the system was… uncertain.
Makini noticed first.
— Something is wrong…
Kion:
— What exactly?
Makini:
— It’s reacting… but differently now.
Rani:
— Like a conflict.
And then —
very faintly.
again.
the same presence.
Fuli snapped:
— He’s closer!
Bunga:
— Okay, I officially don’t like “closer”.
And then…
the ground trembled.
But not like before.
Not destruction.
Resistance.
The system began to lag.
Makini:
— It can’t decide the response!
Kion:
— Why?!
Silence.
And then…
from deep within the chamber.
a voice.
calm.
cold.
Makali:
— Because you no longer follow one pattern.
Everyone turned sharply.
He stood above them.
On a platform.
Calm.
Fuli:
— You controlled all of this?!
Makali:
— I don’t control.
Pause.
— I guide.
Rani stepped forward:
— You lied to us?
Makali:
— I showed you choice.
Kion tensed:
— That’s not choice. That’s a trap.
Makali looked directly at him.
— No.
Pause.
— A trap only works when you are divided.
And then…
the system began to fade.
Makini:
— It’s weakening!
Fuli:
— We broke it?!
Makini:
— No…
Pause.
— We… restructured it.
And suddenly —
part of the floor collapsed downward.
Beshte:
— AGAIN?!
But this time —
Kion didn’t step back.
He stepped forward.
And said:
— We don’t split.
Rani moved beside him.
— No.
— We stay together.
Night Guard followed instantly.
Baliyo:
— We hold formation.
Surak:
— Stabilized unit.
And the system…
shifted again.
The light lines became even.
Like it lost control.
For the first time —
Makali tensed slightly.
— Interesting…
Pause.
— You learned how to break the model.
Fuli:
— We’re not playing your games!
Makali:
— No.
Pause.
— You already are.
And then…
the entire structure froze.
Silence.
And the light…
stopped.
Makini:
— The system… shut down?!
Kion:
— Why?!
Makali quietly:
— Because it can no longer divide you.
Pause.
And for the first time —
something changed in his voice.
Not confidence.
But a plan partially breaking.
— This is not over.
And he stepped back into the dark.
But faster this time.
Fuli:
— He’s running?!
Rani:
— That’s not running…
Kion stared forward:
— That’s repositioning.
Silence returned.
But now it felt different.
Like the system was no longer their enemy.
Only…
watching.
And deep underground…
something faintly answered.
The silence after Makali’s departure was unnatural.
Not peaceful.
Empty.
The system no longer glowed.
But it also wasn’t fully off.
It was… suspended.
Makini stepped toward the central ring.
— This isn’t an ending…
Kion:
— Then what is it?
Makini:
— A reset.
Rani:
— A reset of what?
Makini didn’t answer immediately.
Her expression was serious.
— Rules.
Silence.
Fuli:
— That sounds worse.
Bunga:
— I agree with Fuli. Anything that “resets” ancient ruins is a hard no from me.
And then —
the stone beneath them “breathed”.
Not movement.
Not collapse.
But like…
the stone remembered it was alive.
Kion sharply:
— Everyone back!
But it was too late.
The symbols lit again.
But this time —
not as a map.
Not as a system.
As a response.
And very faintly…
deep below.
not a voice.
not a vision.
a feeling:
“You disrupted balance.”
Fuli:
— I don’t like that.
Rani:
— That’s not a warning…
— That’s a fact.
And then —
very faintly.
somewhere deep beneath them.
something answered.
Makini sharply:
— This isn’t just the ruins…
Pause.
— It’s part of something larger.
Kion:
— Larger?
Makini:
— Yes.
She looked at the symbol.
— And we just unlocked it.
Silence grew heavy.
Fuli snapped:
— We need to leave.
Kion nodded.
— Agreed.
Rani:
— Together.
Beshte:
— And fast.
Bunga:
— I support “fast”.
They moved toward the exit.
But behind them…
the stone ring did not stay silent.
It “breathed”.
And for a moment —
a shadow formed.
Not a creature.
Not a shape.
Just presence.
Kion stopped.
— Did you see that?
Fuli:
— Yes…
Rani:
— Yes.
Bunga:
— I saw it and regret everything.
And then —
very faintly.
a silent laugh.
And gone.
Makini quietly:
— That wasn’t Makali…
Pause.
— That’s something deeper.
And for a moment —
a whisper in the structure:
“Hugaw…”
but no one understood it.
Fuli:
— What was that?!
Kion:
— I don’t know.
Rani:
— But we felt it.
Silence.
And then…
the ground stabilized.
As if the system decided:
“enough for today.”
Exit.
Light.
Wind.
Reality.
Bunga:
— I’ve never been happier to see normal air.
Beshte:
— Me too…
Fuli:
— But this isn’t over.
Rani looks at Kion.
— This is just the beginning.
Kion nods.
— And we’re already inside it.
And far away…
on a cliff…
Makali stands still.
He doesn’t speak.
Doesn’t move.
Just watches the ruins.
— They broke my system…
Pause.
— But opened another.
A faint smile.
— Good.
And he vanishes into shadow.
there will be more...
