A book in Yellow

Work Text:

Hastur felt like killing itself because of stupid group projects. It was a diagnosed introvert and that met it despised interacting with anyone. So when the teacher said that they would be doing a group project that they would have to work on outside of school in groups of two it felt like murdering the whole class and the teacher too. It hoped that it got paired with one of the quiet kids who mind their business and would want to get the project done as fast as possible.

But the god of all Creation had some serious beef with it so it got paired with stupid Haïta Shepherd. It hated that thing, he was way too energetic and noisy. And now that thing was gonna have to come to its house. The worst thing was that the teacher was very stubborn and when she gave you a partner to work with you were stuck with them because she would always say “such it up”, which infuriated it.

For Hastur there were only two options for it to get home, A. Avery or Derek comes and picks it up or B. Walking home. You might ask what about a bus but it thinks that the yellow prison buses were for peasants. And today it was followed by Haïta who was working with it on a group book project.

“So this small house is where you live huh.” Haïta commented on the house that they've only been living in for a few months now.

They moved to an actual house over the summer before Hastur started high school. They moved there specifically because it was only ten minutes from the school it would be attending. It was also closer to Avery’s work. Speaking of work, Derek was no longer unemployed and was now working from home.

Hastur unlocked the door and stepped and hesitantly let the stranger into it's home.

“Dad I'm home, I also have someone here for a group project.” Hastur announced to its father who was in the other room.

It led Haïta to the table where they would be working on the group book report. The first step was deciding on what book to do their report on.

“Hey, can we do the report on one of my favorite books?” The peasant asked it.

“And what may that book be?” It asked the human boy.

“Here let me get it,” He dug into his backpack then soon pulled out a green leather cover book, “Here, my all time favorite, “The King in Yellow.” a pretty old classic.”

As he was explaining the book to Hastur, who was actually kinda interested in the book, Derek walked by the table where the two kids were working and noticed the book on the table. He recognized it from when he was doing research on it before baby Hastru appeared, when he was trapped with the laptop when he first met the thing he calls his child. He decided to ignore it though he did agree that it was a good book, perfect for a book report.

They kids agreed to do the report on the King in Yellow. Hastur was going to do its part of the first five chapters of the book and Haïta was going to use the last five chapters of the book to report on. When it started reading the first half of the book it was very interested in the horrors and eldritches that lied in the story.

It was only able to get to chapter two by the time that Haïta had to leave. And when he left he took the book with him, which made Hastur a bit pissed off because it desired to read more. Derek was not clueless, unlike Avery. He could tell something was wrong, so he went digging in some of the old boxes from his old apartment before all the chaos. He really didn’t know why he kept a copy of the King in Yellow but it was now coming in handy.

“Here you go kindo.” He gave the book to it.

“How do you have this?” Hastur questioned its father.

“Well I had it when I was trying to figure out what you were originally that thing.” He explained to the kid.

“Oh that makes sense, well thanks.” Hastur showed emotion which rarely happened but when it did it felt like their efforts weren’t for nothing.
