Work Text:
Shane is still admittedly nervous when it comes to things with Scott. It had come as a surprise when Scott seemingly caught onto his attraction on their first time on the All-Star team together, but it’s been … nice to have another hockey player and captain to talk to about it.
It also helps to have someone to explore with.
It’s still new, and he probably shouldn’t be so obvious about spending his time in New York at Scott’s apartment.
Then, again, he did invite him.
Before he can rethink his choice to show up tonight, Scott opens the door with a grin on his face. “Shane, come in.”
He enters and gives him a kiss. “I know that this a secret and new, but I thought I’d make us some dinner for a date.”
Shane grins, still a bit nervous, but he appreciates Scott’s efforts as much as he enjoys that they’re on the same page about things.
“So, I know that you think you found a lucky smoothie, but I think that your smoothie choice sucks so I’m here to find you a better smoothie.”
Scott laughs as they move towards his awesome kitchen. “Is that why you gave me a list of ingredients to buy and wouldn’t tell me why?”
“That depends, did you buy what I asked?”
Scott gestures to the fridge and offers, “Why don’t you take a look?”
Shane peeks in and sees that everything he asked for was there. “Good, now I can find you a good smoothie to treat as your lucky smoothie.”
Scott laughs. “And how do I know that you’re not trying to make me an unlucky smoothie, so you win?”
“Oh, please, I don’t need to make you an unlucky smoothie to win,” Shane offers with a smug grin. “But I could find me a lucky smoothie, and then, what?”
Scott grabs his hips and pulls him close. “Then, I suppose we’ll just have to see who the better Captain is.”
Shane wraps his arms around Scott’s neck and says, “I’m sure we both know who that is –”
“Me,” they say together and laugh.
The best part about this whole thing is that although they enjoy competing and winning, and they both love to beat the other (Shane had been surprisingly happy for Scott when he turned the Admirals losing streak around), they can tease about it, too.
When they’re together, they can talk hockey and superstitions and actually enjoy it with the competition getting in the way.
Shane gives him a kiss. “I’m just saying that we can find you a better smoothie, one that doesn’t sound gross as hell.”
“You’ve never even tried it,” Scott retorts. “But admittedly, it was … only okay. I just thought it was lucky.”
“Well, we’ll find you another lucky smoothie, and you’ll just have to not drink it when you’re playing me.”
“Even if I forego my lucky smoothie, I’ll still win.”
“We shall see.”
“Yes, we shall.”

The next night, the lucky smoothie won, but Shane’s not giving up. The next time, he’ll win, and Scott’ll be just as proud of him.
That’s the good thing about their relationship, even competitors, they can still be proud of their boyfriends – just in secret.
