Chapter 1: Chapter One

Chapter Text

“You’ll be fine, Looey,” his mom said. “I know it’s a little more overwhelming and quite different from elementary school, but I’m positive you’ll be fine. Just remember what dad said, yeah?” She patted him on the back as she ushered him through the door.

Looey nodded as he hopped in the car, sitting in the passenger seat with his backpack across his lap.

His mother started the car, the motor coming alive with a growl. He was pretty nervous, but at least his best friend Yatta would be going to the same school.

Looey wondered what his first class would be… What if nobody liked him? Well, nobody really did in the first place. What if he accidentally spilled one of his deepest secrets from the tap of his shoes against the halls, kinda like morse code? What if Yatta started hanging out with other kids? What if Yatta is secretly-

“Looey? We’re here.” His mother tapped him on his shoulder.

“Oh, my bad. Zoned out.” Looey was lucky the school was around a minute’s drive away. He grabbed his backpack and stepped out of the car, the chill autumn air swishing past him.

Trying to search for a familiar face, he looked around the parking lot. Doesn’t look like she’s here yet, he thought to himself. Which is true, most likely. His best friend, Yatta, was always either late, buying mountains of candy that would last her at least an hour, or off annoying some people.

“Looking for Yatta? She’ll be here soon, I guarantee," his mom said.

Looey nodded his head and sighed.

“Bye, mom, see you later.” His mom waved at him, before wishing him a good day, and he waved back, then walked off into the building.

Once he was inside, there was a bulletin board on his right. It read Welcome Students! Along with the school's logo above it and various doodles he assumed were left by other students.

The entrance was one big room, with stairs going to the next floor. Looey could see the cafeteria from here, it just being a little further up and to the left. There was also a small canteen, but it had its blinds closed. There was a neon sign above it that read SNACKS ‘N DRINKS! In red and blue lettering.

He looked at his papers, looking for his assigned locker number. He glanced around once again, noticing various lockers along the sides of the walls. He could see some upstairs too, as they were a light blue colour.

Suddenly, he felt a tap on his shoulder. He jumps and looks behind him, his ears perking up slightly.

“HI!” Oh, it’s just Yatta. “LOOEY! I’m SO excited for our FIRST YEAR! Think of all the PEOPLE we will meet! And… and maybe we can even find a new FRIEND!” Yatta exclaimed as she bounced around, her school uniform skirt unnecessarily hiking up a little too high. At least she was smart enough to wear shorts.

Looey chuckled as he nodded, relaxing a bit as his friend was now here. “That would be nice. There should be at least one person that’s like us, right?” Looey hoped.

Yatta squealed and took out a chocolate bar from her pocket. “YES!!” She took a massive bite out of the chocolate. It was a mystery how Yatta ate all this candy and still remained as skinny as a 2000’s model. Maybe she had a fast metabolism?

Looey took another look at the paper in his hands that included his locker number and his classes. “What’cha looking at?” Yatta said with a full mouth. Disgusting. Very… Yatta. She leaned over, an excited look on her face.

“I’m looking for my locker,” replied Looey. “Says it should be around here somewhere. Three twenty-six. Also, chew with your mouth closed please—”

Yatta pointed at a locker. “THAT ONE! The one where that funny looking strawberry guy is!”

Looey sighed. A funny looking strawberry? Looey looked over to where Yatta was pointing. There, of course, was his assigned locker, but as well as the “weird looking strawberry guy.”

Looey wondered if they had just walked over here, unless he just didn't notice them. He had a light pink striped bandanna around his neck that he kept adjusting, maybe out of nervousness, Looey assumed.

He was surrounded by a group of people; A cake roll, a gingerbread cookie, a Christmas ornament, a TV, a shell, a moon, and a flower. The rainbow flower seemed to be arguing with the green TV, before stomping off.

“He looks normal to me. You’re probably candy-drunk again.” Looey joked.

Yatta giggled, swallowing her chocolate. “I had LUCKY CHARMS for BREAKFAST!”

Looey opened up his locker, gazing at the empty space. He looked at his schedule, realizing his first class was Art. That’s easy. The only hard part is finding the room itself.

“Hey, Yatta, what’s your first class?” Yatta perked up from eating her third chocolate bar, and pulled out a crumpled up piece of paper. She squinted her eyes and moved her head a little closer to see the words.

“Art! I have art!” Well that makes things a little easier as well.

“Ah, so do I. That’s good.” Yatta jumped in joy. “COME ON! Let’s go find the CLASSROOM!” Yatta grabbed Looey’s arm and pulled him with her.

The group beside them, the “weird looking strawberry man” and his friends, looked over at them. The shell giggled. “That piñata girl seems energetic. It would be hard to be her friend, I assume.” The rest of the group ignored her, as per usual.

“... Heh.” The moon patted her back, and she smiled at him. The strawberry guy looked over at Yatta and Looey. His gaze locked on Looey. He seems—

“Berry-Boy? Earth to Sprout…” His train of thought was interrupted by said TV. She snapped her fingers in front of his face and he snapped back to life.

“Ah, ahem, my bad. What were we talking about? Also, don't call me that.” The TV facepalmed.

The shell giggled again. “Were you staring at a certain someone, Sprout?” The strawberry–well, sprout–paused for a second, opening his mouth, before hesitating slightly.

“No. I just zoned out,” he replied. The TV rolled her eyes, placing a hand on her hip before pulling her phone out. She quickly moved her metallic fingers to text someone that he couldn't see, therefore typing to lean over to know who.

“Hey! Get your eyes on your own screen..” She huffed, glaring at him.

“Jeez, my bad..?” He put his hands up in guilt, still wondering who she was texting. He turned away, before glancing over again. The nametag said “Brightney”, with a lightbulb emoji beside it.

Sprout wondered if it was another friend of hers that he didn't know of. After a moment, Sprout looked around at all of his friends. The ammonite, Shelly, was happily talking about some dinosaur stuff with the moon, Astro. Shelly and Astro have always been very close.

The TV, Vee, was playing around on her phone, seeming to stop texting her friend. The gingerbread cookie, Ginger, was deeply engrossed in a conversation with the Christmas ornament, Bobette.

The flower, Dandy, the one that had brought everyone together, would often really never talk to them. He would often just wander off whenever he would like.

And lastly, the cake roll, Cosmo. Cosmo was Sprout’s best friend. They’ve been with each other through thick and thin since they were in daycare. Nothing could separate Sprout and Cosmo–everyone knew that their parents often mentioned how the two had a bit too many matching outfits, but he never really cared.

They shared a love for baking, the kitchen was their favourite place to hang out. Cosmo was the most important person in Sprout’s world, and no one could replace that.

Right?
