Work Text:
Elle loves good coffee. The sweeter it is, the better. She knows that many coworkers prefer their British tea, or in any case, black coffee. However, the coffee Emmett makes for her, it's her favorite. It's the perfect balance between sweet and sweeter, besides, it has comestible pink sparkles and cream! It isn't the best?
“Are you ready my love?” He asks while picking up the dishes. “We need to meet them in half an hour.”
“Right! Thanks for the coffee.” She kisses him on his cheek and goes to the bathroom.
Despite being the weekend, Elle likes to be presentable, so it takes her the whole thirteen minutes to be finally ready, especially because today it's a special day. Bruser barks, sharing his excitement for the day once she settles him inside his tiny house. She goes downstairs to meet Emmett at the chimney.
While walking along the hallway, Elle can see some pictures of her life: the day she graduated as an attorney, when she won her case of Miss W., when she moved to London, her wedding with Emmett, and many more. But the ones that stand out are the ones where Harry Potter is present.
After liberating his godfather, Sirius Black, Harry started to live with him and his partner, Remus Lupin. The three of them are a perfectly happy family. Sure, for all them it took time to heal; Remus because of his condition, Sirius from the nightmares and the Dementor's torture, and even Harry, being abused by their uncles and cousin... it was rough at the beginning.
However, years have gone by, now Harry is eleven, and they will go with him to buy his school supplies. It was pretty obvious he will be accepted in Hogwarts, despite Elle's efforts for them to consider him to apply at Ilvermorny or Beauxbatons, even Emmett voted for the second one. Not such luck.
“Ready?” Emmett asks.
“More than ready.” Both step in the chimney and go to Diagon Alley.
***
"Aunt Elle!" Harry exclaims happily as he runs to where Elle and Emmett are.
"Honey!" She gets ready so when Harry throws himself towards her, they don't fall down to the floor.
Getting custody of Harry was... longer than she had expected. Half of the wizard's community didn't want him to be adopted and raised by an ex-convict; they were offers from important families to raise him, even. But Elle has never been the kind of woman that quit and accepts the easy way. She stood strong and Sirius won custody.
Since that moment, Elle has been close to the family, and therefore, close to Harry. When the Ministry of Magic agreed to give Harry to Sirius, the condition was that every now and then, they will have an inspection. Mostly, it is to make sure Harry is in a safe and lovely home, but Elle doesn't like to leave things on its own, so she makes sure to get the report ASAP. That and the constant exchange of letters has made them close to the family.
"What took you so long?" He questions, still hugging her with all the force of an eleven year old boy.
"Sorry, I made breakfast too late." Emmett excuses.
"Uncle Emmett." Harry also hugs him tightly.
"I can imagine the breakfast, then." Sirius says shamelessly.
"Sirius!" All the grown ups scold him, but he just laughs.
"I couldn't help it. Thanks for coming." He says with a smile.
When Elle met Sirius, he was like a living corpse. The hunger, dehydration and the constant presence of dementors, made him look like a zombie. Even after gaining his freedom, his body needed to readjust to eat decent proportions three times per day. However, with great patience, he now looks healthy and very handsome, like an aristocrat from centuries ago.
On the other hand, Remus still looks extremely thin for his own good, but there's a spark in his eyes that reassures Elle. Thanks to his lycanthropy condition, he can eat the whole world without gaining a single kilogram. Prize or punishment? In any case, now he looks happy and confident, qualities that Elle treasures in her friends.
"Our pleasure," Emmett responds, "Harry, ready for your first Nimbus 2000?" But before he could answer, Sirius intervenes.
"Hell to the no! We are the ones who will buy him the broom." And they start walking with Harry following him closely, totally excited.
"The new broom isn't too much?" Remus asks her, walking alongside her.
"Both of us gathered enough money to buy it. It's not just his farewell gift, it's also for his birthday."
"Oh! Well, that explains it. Who do you think will win?"
"Emmett. I trained him to beat Sirius in any argument." That makes Remus laugh ‘till he needs to stop to catch his breath.
Remus also went through a lot. They exchanged letters for years, and with all the visits to their home, they became good friends. Remus is so kind and centered that every time they are together, she feels at ease. And Remus finds her so brilliant and shining that he can't help but admire her. So of course, he has shared with her some of his private thoughts and memories of the past. He is finally open with her.
"How's everything in the Ministry?" Remus asks once he has cooled down.
Elle has her own law firm. She along with a classmate named Vivian and other women handle the 'impossible cases'. Since she exonerated the famous Sirius Black, it wasn't difficult to start, everyday they had a long line of witches and wizards waiting to be attended, and they even had cases from all around the world. When they opened their office in London, it was the perfect time to move for the wedding.
Now she works and lives in London, and above all, she has a close relationship with the Ministry of Magic. After the downfall of Mr. Crouch, it was a kinder one. Sometimes she even has a say if they want to approve a law or a decree, it doesn't matter the subject, she can speak her mind, and the Ministry listens.
"There's still some resistance to the agreement with the goblins about magical artefacts made by them and that now belong to important wizard families, but well, I'm sure they will compromise."
"Are you helping to make that happen?" Remus asks with curiosity.
"They didn't ask for my help. Besides, I'm working on something more important." And she gives him a pointed look.
"You know you don't have to do it."
"But I want to."
"It could damage your image."
"A good cause it's a good cause." She holds Remus' arm and squeezes it in support.
Since they met each other, and he confined her his secret, she vowed that she will make a law to support lycanthropies' rights, in other words, basic human rights. But with all her clients, the opening of her office in London, the wedding and other projects, only now she focuses fully on making the law.
"Well," he clears his throat, "I'm sorry for the goblins, they won't get your help."
"One case at the time." She smiles sweetly. "And how is Sirius? You mentioned in your last letter that he had another episode."
Sirius' episodes are basically nightmares so strong that even his magic reacts to his fear, protecting him. However, they occur mostly at night, but sometimes there's collateral damage. Nothing bad has ever hurt Harry, but Remus is the one who has to deal with the aftermath. It isn't pretty. The war leaves deeper scars on young people.
"Nothing bad. At least, not that involved his magic."
"Do you know what triggered it?"
"Harry was asking about Sirius' family. They were never kind, to say the least. So he dreamed about an incident that occurred when we were teenagers. The reason why he ran away." Remus says the last sentence in a whisper, so Elle makes sure to just hold his hand and gives her support. It's not her place to ask if he doesn't want to share.
"WelI, at least now he's at ease, isn't he?"
"Yes! The recovery has been much better lately." Remus says it proudly, but soon a dark cloud invades his mind. "I don't know what we're gonna do once Harry is at the school."
"You will manage, like always." They share a smile, relief for the other's friendship. Until Harry demands their attention again.
"Aunt Elle, Moony! Look!" He was carrying the new broom with pride and with certain carefulness, as if he's afraid he will break it.
"That's amazing, pup!" Remus exclaims.
"Not amazing!" Sirius says with an annoyed look in his face, "that was supposed to be our gift for him. I already had the money here!" And he takes a small bag full of coins. Well, Sirius was never subtle about anything.
"In defense of my client, he can receive any gift from any member of his acquaintances."
"Yeah, sure, you are our lawyer and our acquaintance!" Sirius keeps the discussion on.
"I don't identify myself as your acquaintance. Besides, I'm the lawyer of the family, not just one member." Emmett stands next to her, putting his arm around her, basically beaming with happiness.
"Agh, whatever. Lawyers. They are all the same." He says like a little kid giving up his tantrum. Only when Remus embraces him with a grin, he relaxes. "Be ready, Emmett, next year I'm gonna buy him the Nimbus 2001."
"You're on." Emmett accepts the challenge.
"Well, let's get him the important things, like, I don't know, his textbooks and other materials." All gentlemen laugh and follow her lead.
It's a pleasant day. The sun shines brightly, Sirius and Emmett keep nagging at each other, Remus keeps Harry at his side since the kid seems about to combust if he doesn't get a look of all the stores, and Elle, well, she's enjoying too much, if she's honest with herself.
Since Harry came to live with Sirius and Remus, the media was a problem. Everyone wanted to get a photograph of 'The Boy Who Lived' and things like that. It was actually dangerous. It wasn't a secret that some supporters of the Dark Lord wanted to eliminate him. So the family went into hiding, the only ones who got the chance to visit them was Dumbledore and Elle. And by extension, her husband.
There were some travels along Harry's life. One time, they went to Iceland to see the Northern Lights, one winter they went to Germany to see all the Christmas lights, and one summer they visited Paris. But Harry has never been in any magical community, neither has he seen Diagon Alley nor spent time with a magical kid. So all of this was exciting for him.
"Careful Harry! Don't get-" but whatever warning Remus was going to say, he stopped. Since Harry was distracted, he crashed against a pole.
"Auch." Sirius says, very unhelpful.
"Ok, sweetheart, I think you will come with me." Elle takes Harry's little hand and guides him to the store.
"Where are you going?" Sirius asks.
"To the only place where I'm an expert." So she takes Harry to buy him clothes.
***
One of the many things she loves about Harry is that, despite his age, he is too kind and a gentleman. Many kids his age would hate to buy clothes because 'it isn't fun', like Paulette's son. But not Harry. Thanks to her, he knows the importance of a good presentation. And since this will be the first time he will be properly in a school, spending time with other kids, he needs to look his very best.
"I think you were more excited about your broom." She comments while Harry keeps looking at himself in the mirror.
"No! Well, yes? No! I-I just..." he sights, "I'm sorry aunt. It's just..."
"Are you nervous?"
"Terrible." He says it like he's agonizing.
"Ok, come here," she makes him sit next to her on the couch of the store. "Tell me exactly how you feel."
"Now that I'm putting on these new clothes, everything is more real. I'm going to be far from home. I won’t see Moony and Padfoot at breakfast. Moony won't bring me new books. I will not travel with Padfoot on his motorcycle."
"You what?"
"I mean, everything will change. Too drastically." Since Harry looks distraught, Elle lets go of the thing he said about Sirius’ motorcycle.
"The word of the day?" She smiles at his use of the word 'drastically'. Harry just nods, sadly. "Sweetheart, you know that life is never ecstatic. Things will always change."
"I know..." he replies without looking at her. "But I'm still scared."
"Scare of what sweetheart?" Harry looks around, making sure nobody is listening.
"What if I can't make friends? What if I don't like them? Or what if I like them but only because I'm famous?" Harry questions with worry and sorrow in his eyes that Elle's heart breaks a little.
Harry's fears are valid. It's actually a thing that she and Emmett had discussed along with Sirius and Remus. They tried to make him spend time with other kids, and for a while, it worked. Sirius used to take him to a muggle park so Harry could play with other kids, but sometimes he was so excited that his magic reacted, so they had to stop.
They tried different ones, they even subscribed him to a school and summer’s camps, so Harry could have certain normality in his life, but that didn't work out for so long. It was hard for Harry to keep his magic a secret. And going to the wizarding world? Even in North America he was well known. All of them were worried about what fame could do to him, and still can do to his kind heart. But they have to face it eventually.
"Harry, listen to me very carefully." Harry looks at her with watery eyes. "You can't control what others will think of you. Some will be kind and will listen to you; others will be mean and cruel; and some others won't even care. What matters is that you always have to be yourself. If you are you, you will eventually find people who will like it and will be your friends. They will help you to be your better self."
"Like you and Emmett?"
"Exactly. You know it wasn't easy for me to be an attorney here. Everyone made fun of how I dress, well, more specifically, the colors that I use, the way that I talk and even the way that I think. But none of that mattered to me, I only had one job."
"Freeing Padfoot."
"Yes. And I did it. I was true to myself and now, look at me? I'm very successful in my work, I had amazing friends, a lovely husband, and the best part, come in," she makes a gesture so Harry gets close, like she's going to share the secret of the world, "the best part is that I'm part of your life." Harry smiles with pride and love for the statement. "So, you don't have to worry about the future. You are a good kid, you're kind, well behaved, loyal, a little impatient, but with a good heart and good intentions. Any kid will be lucky to have you as a friend."
"Thanks, aunt Elle." Harry smiles, visibly relaxed. However, she can see there's still one more question. "But if I don't fit in?"
"Well," she hugs him and pauses as if she hadn't thought about it, "in that case, we will take you out of the school, and I will kidnap you so you can live with me and Emmett forever and ever." Harry laughs, definitely more at ease.
"Thank you so much, aunt Elle." They hug one more time.
"Now, choose the colors you want, I will get your hat."
***
They are at the train station. Elle feels so sad that the day finally arrived, and isn't even his kid. Oh well, she loves Harry as if he was hers. If she's a wreck, Sirius and Remus must be devastated.
"Are you ready champ?" Emmett asks, is the only one who doesn't seem on the verge of tears.
"I'm ready, uncle, and all of you?" Harry looks at the four grown ups with worry.
"We will be fine, Harry, don't you worry about a thing," Remus managed to say. "Just remember, if you forgot something, you can send an owl and we will send it to you."
"You can write to us anytime, it doesn't matter the time of the day." Sirius adds.
"And about anything. If you want advice, for us to buy you something, or if you need a favor, no questions asked, you can contact us too." Emmett offers.
"Or if something is wrong or you are in trouble, you also have my office address." She says it lightly, but they share a look, Harry nods. He understands that she means what they talked on Diagon Alley. The train whistles one more time.
"Alright, pup, we will see you on holidays." Remus hugs him tightly.
Everyone had a chance to hug Harry for the last time. Elle even took her time. Every other family was saying goodbye to their sons and daughters, but the ones who are first year... well, they are very identifiable. All of them are crying or trying to hold it together. They see Harry getting inside, Elle lets herself be embraced by Emmett.
"Love, aren't they the Malfoy's?" He asks, looking at the crowd.
She follows his gaze and sees them. The Malfoys. Elle briefly met them in Sirius' trial. The head of the family, Lucius, is standing proudly among the families, but his wife is who catches Elle's attention. She matches her husband's hair color, and both look really elegant. Elle is astounded by her shoe's selection. Besides, she looks too much like her sister, Andromeda.
"Yes, they are." She says coldly.
Elle respects all people, their opinions, their clothes and ideology. But there's one thing she can't stand: people who think can bully anyone without suffering the consequences. She has met lawyers, preachers, politicians, who think they are better than the rest. She can manage that. However, the Malfoys? She can identify a bully when she sees one, even if it's a kid.
"You were too kind Elle," Sirius says, anger showing in all his face, "I would have..." he pauses, breathing slowly, "I would have done something stupid and ruined our day." He admits. Remus takes his hand and gives him a kiss.
"Fortunately, you didn't have to."
The little kid, Draco, was trying to talk to Harry, make conversation, but as soon as he realized Harry didn't know all the things he knew, he was making him feel stupid. She couldn't allow that. She intervened and talked to the kid about law and the Wizengamot, she wanted to make it clear not everyone knew everything about the world.
He didn't like it.
Neither his mom, but when she was about to make a scene, she recognized Elle. She politely apologized for his son and took him out of the store. Elle didn't believe a single word. She was just polite, which made her a little angry. If that mom allows his son conduct, he will be a problem in the future. But well, not everything has a simple solution.
“Hopefully, they won’t be a problem.” Emmett says.
“Hopefully.”
She doesn't want to keep thinking about them, so they see how Harry says goodbye from the train and leaves for Hogwarts. ‘He will be alright’, Elle thinks. Dumbledore, a respectful and powerful wizard, will keep Harry safe. Nothing bad will happen.

Dear aunt Elle,
How are you? I hope you and uncle Emmett are fine. I'm well, yesterday was the ceremony for the beginning of the new school year. Despite Moony and Padfoot telling me all about Hogwarts and their adventures, it was amazing seeing it for the first time in real life. Aunt Elle, Hogwarts is amazing! It's so huge! And beautiful, and magical... it would take your breath away. The only thing that I don't like is the stairs. There are so many! I wish we could travel with our brooms, but well, Moony says it's good for my health, so there's that.
Also, I met the boy from the shop the other day, in Diagon Alley, you remember him? Is Draco Malfoy. It's in my year and guess what? He was so rude with Ron and practically he looked down on him. I didn't like that. He offered me his friendship, but I don't want to be friends with a bully. Besides, he's in Slytherin. I don't know why that doesn't surprise me, Ron says all dark wizards have been in that house.
Now, you may wonder who is Ron? Well, he's my best friend! I met him on the train, shared some candys, and he even introduced me to his pet, a rat named Scabbers. He's so kind, fun, and he has a huge family! He has five older brothers and one little sister, can you imagine? I wish I had a brother or sister. Malfoy says something about the Weasleys and their lack of money, 'too many mouths to feed', he's such a jerk.
Anyways, my other roommates seem fine, they are Seamus, Dean, obviously Ron, and Neville. I hope we can all be friends. I also met a girl named Hermione Granger. She has muggle parents, but somehow she seems to know everything about magic, even more than Ron. She identified a false spell on the train, and she also knew my name.
It's so weird everyone identified me, how can I be famous for something I don't even remember? Besides, the price of my fame was the murder of my parents, and everyone forgets that part of that event. What can I do, aunt Elle? Padfoot and Moony had taken care of me, and I love them with all my heart... but I still miss my parents. I wish I could meet them at least once.
Well, that's it for now. Thank you for the shoe shiner, I will use it as often as possible, like you say, a good appearance can improve your day. I'll write to you soon.
With love,
Harry P.
Dear Harry,
Thank you so much for your letter! Emmett and I are perfectly fine, working, as usual. I'm so glad you loved Hogwarts, I haven't been there personally, but everyone says it’s a 'cool' castle. And Remus is right, despite the many stairs, it will be good for your health, but don't worry, your new broom will be waiting for you, maybe you can invite Ron and his family for Christmas and play a game.
I'm also glad that you are in Gryffindor, like your family, you are indeed a brave boy, and it's not only because you defeated the Dark Lord, huh, look at that, I made a rime without meaning to. Anyways, I'm pretty sure you would have made friends in any house, but it's amazing you get along with your roommates. Sometimes, they will help you more than you think, and don't forget that, despite the houses being different, that doesn't mean you only have to befriend your house. You can find amazing people on ravenclaw or hufflepuff, even in slytherin, you just have to give people a chance.
Which leads me to Draco Malfoy. He does sound like a total douchebag, but honey, don't forget he's a kid, just like you. He grew up in a different environment, his parents teached him different values. I'm not saying you have to be his friend, he insulted yours after all, but tried not to be too hard on him. Maybe if he's surrounded with different mind-settings, he can form his own perspective of what's right and wrong. But that's just my opinion, if he's too difficult, just ignore him. You don't have to prove him anything, besides, always reach for a diplomatic answer first, even if Sirius doesn't approve. He has the patient of a toddler.
Now, enjoy your time at school, learn all you can, keep your good spirits, and don't look disheveled, don't forget that presentation is key in any environment. Also, maybe you could talk to Hermione Granger? It seems like she could help you a lot with school work. Don't forget to write!
With love,
E.W-R.

Dear aunt Elle,
First of all, happy birthday!!!! I know uncle Emmett made you a great party, and I hope you received my gift, I know you will love it. I wish I was with you, but we will see each other at Christmas, so I will give you a proper hug. 'Now, how are you? Uncle Emmett told me you went with Sirius and Remus to the graveyard and said hi to my mom and dad. Thank you so much for that. It's weird to not see them. I miss them, and it's weirder because I didn't know them, but I kind of do, isn't it odd?
Anyways, I follow your advice regarding professor Snape, and let me tell you... it didn't work. That man hates my guts, and I don't know why! Padfoot says it’s because I'm too much like my father and professor Snape envy him, Moony says it's because they didn't get along. Wherever the reason is, my professor still hates me, even Ron because he's my friend. Like I said, he has favoritism with his slytherins.
The rest of the classes are fine. Despite being hard, I quite enjoy it. I thought magic was something that comes naturally, since it’s in our blood… how wrong I was. It takes too much theoretical knowledge, patience, practice, and good aim. All of you make it seem so easy. But tell me, how are you doing? Uncle Emmett says you are taking an interesting case regarding a witch and the goblins, something about an heirloom? Must be exciting. I can’t wait to hear back from you.
With love,
Harry P.
Dear Elle,
Have you heard the news? The goblins are really pushing a law so every magical family can be searched for artifacts created by them. Can you believe it? Goblins are known for not forgetting, and personally I would love to see Malfoy’s face when they searched in his mansion, but I must confess, it’s quite excessive, don’t you think? I guess everyone is jumping after the Gringotts robbery. We still don’t know much about it, by the way, we hoped you knew something more, but since it’s quite the scandal, I’m pretty sure the goblins will try to hide everything they can. I was thinking of moving Harry’s inheritance from our vaults, but Remus says I’m being paranoid, what do you recommend? We will wait for your response. Good luck with your case!
With appreciation,
S.B.
Dear Moony,
School is hard. I know, I know, it’s nothing compared to the real word, but classes are harder than I expected, it’s gonna take a while before we can even cast a spell. But I’m so thankful for the books you sent me, they have been really helpful, even Ron uses them so we are not that lost. By the way, do you know something about magical creatures? Let’s say, I dunno, big dogs with three heads? I’m just curious, a boy in my dorm talked about them, and you have read practically all the books in the world, you must know something about them. I’ll wait for your answer.
Missing you,
Harry P.
Dear Harry,
I must confess I’m not an expert in the subject, I don’t even know if they are real anymore. However, I know a myth about them: Greek mythology says there is a huge dog with three heads called Cerberus, and he guards the doors to the Underworld. He follows the orders of Hades, the god of the dead. Some myths say that only Hercules was able to subdue him since it was one of the twelve works he had to do for Hera, and also Orpheus could handle him by making him sleep with his music when he went to search for his love, Eurydice. I can tell you more about them at Christmas, but it’s all I know about that creature. If you want more information, I’m sure the librarian could help you, even Hagrid! He’s a big fan of weird and dangerous creatures. Now, don’t forget to do all your homework, eat properly, and don’t break the rules under any circumstances. You are a good boy, don’t forget that. We are so proud of you,
Love,
R.J.L.

Harry James Potter! What did you think about fighting a freaking troll!? Are you crazy!? I mean, it’s kind of cool, but so dangerous! You could have gotten hurt! You could have died! Moony and I are so disappointed. We know you tried to stop the little girl, what was her name again? Hermione? But you should have talked with a professor, not done it yourself with your friend!!!! The three of you are so lucky that you are in one piece. Despite professor McGonagall not punishing you, you are grounded! You won’t receive a single candy anymore, and we will reduce your allowance until we see you. Period.
Take care,
Moony and Padfoot.
Dear aunt Elle,
I know all of you are mad at me, and I’m deeply sorry, I didn’t think too much of the danger, I didn’t think at all, I just wanted to help. It won’t happen again, I promised. I guess all I wanted to say was that… and that I have a new friend, her name is Hermione Granger. We will talk soon.
With love,
Harry P.

Elle and Emmett are having dinner at a muggle restaurant near the Leaky Cauldron. Both just finished their work, so they decided to have a little date before heading back to their home. Emmett loves these dates, it’s when his beautiful wife is more excited and shares all kinds of information. If it’s a big case, she talks about the rules she could apply, if it’s office gossip, she shares what she discovered, even if it’s a book Remus gives her, she immediately jumps and talks about it. She’s so endearing.
“So you will buy the book?”
“Of course! It’s Remus' recommendation, it will be worth it.”
“I can see it,” Emmett smiles. She always buys Remu’s recommendations.
“And you? What about your work? Wizarding families believe they own goblin-made objects forever?”
Emmet works for the Ministry of Magic, he’s a lawyer specialized in defense and appeals. After Sirius’ case, he still wanted to work for the Ministry and do some good. Despite the war and the aftermath, there’s still so much injustice, so he decided to help and made the cases strong when it’s necessary.
For a moment, he believed that the Ministry would never accept him, but he had helped by regaining witches and wizards' trust in the government, so they have a good alliance. Besides, he can help Elle and vice versa. Everyone wins. The case he’s dealing with is about the goblins and their artifacts.
“That’s the traditional interpretation, yes. Once purchased, ownership transfers permanently to the buyer or their heirs.” Elle gets closer to the table.
“But goblins don’t see it that way, right? To them, the creator retains ultimate ownership. The object is more like… a lifetime lease.” Emmett nodded, tapping the napkin thoughtfully.
“Exactly. It’s not just a legal disagreement, it’s a fundamental conflict of property systems. Wizards operate on transfer of ownership. Goblins operate on retention of authorship rights.” She drinks from her wine, thinking.
“Okay, but from a fairness standpoint? If a goblin crafts something with their skill, their magic, their cultural knowledge… shouldn’t they have some continuing claim?”
“Exactly! In muggle law, you’d compare that to intellectual property. But even then, physical objects usually belong to the buyer unless there’s a contract stating otherwise.” Elle raised an eyebrow.
It’s quite an interesting subject. At the beginning, a witch came to Elle for legal advice, the witch had an ugly encounter with a goblin that made her bracelet. The goblin said it had magical properties and things like that. She even said that the bracelet was made for the grandmother of the witch, and since she died, they should give it back.
The witch wasn’t happy and made a scandal. Since that moment, there’s been tension between witches and goblins, and the robbery in Gringotts didn’t help. However, Elle didn’t take the case because she doesn’t know much about ownership, and she was already working on something else. Besides, the goblin was faster, she took her case to Emmett, personally. So he’s dealing with it.
“Which there clearly isn’t,” Elle continues, “because wizards never thought they needed one.” Emmett gave a small smile.
“Or never cared to negotiate one.” Oh the great thinking of the wizarding world. It could have been avoidable if they didn't ignore muggle thinking that much.
“So legally, under current wizarding law, the goblins don’t have a strong claim.” She sounds resigned.
“Not in court, no.” However, Emmett sees how his wife set down her fork, her mind already spinning.
“But ethically?” Emmett meets her gaze.
“That’s where it gets complicated.” But he can see it. He’s witnessing Elle’s expression sharpening. It’s the look she got when she was about to build a case no one saw coming.
“Not complicated. Interesting,” she’s smiling, “because if we reframe this, not as property law, but as cultural rights… then the argument changes.” Emmett leaned back slightly, studying her.
“You’re thinking of building a new legal framework?” Elle smiled. God, he loves his wife so much.
“I’m thinking the law is outdated… and someone needs to challenge it.” Emmett let out a quiet breath, somewhere between admiration and inevitability.
“You do realize this would put you against centuries of wizarding precedent? It will be bigger than freeing Sirius,” he warns her. He’s totally on her side, but he won’t be at peace if he doesn’t tell her about the risks. Still, she grabs her napkin to clean her mouth, completely unfazed.
“Honey, please. I didn’t settle down here to just respect bad law. Besides, I will be by your side, don’t you want to work in the most fascinating case we’ve ever had?” Both smile, knowingly that the other will support their ideas to the end of the world.
“The most fascinating case you’ve ever had? I thought that was my case.” Both jump in surprise. They didn’t see that Remus and Sirius were also in the restaurant.
“Oh my! What a lovely surprise.” Elle says and greets them, just like Emmett.
“It’s good to see you? Are you going to have dinner?” He makes a gesture to the waitress so she can put two more seats on their table.
“Yes, it’s been a long day.” They sit and Emmett can see the exhaustion on their faces.
“Oh no, what happened?”
“Harry had an accident in his first quidditch match this afternoon.” Sirius replies.
“WHAT?!” Both Elle and Emmett scream, drawing attention to their table.
“It wasn’t that bad,” Remus quickly explains, “but it was scary.”
Turns out that they asked special permission to see Harry’s first game as a seeker. He was so excited when he told them the news. Emmett was particularly sad about not going because of work, same as Elle, but maybe it was for the best. For some random reason, Harry’s broom starts acting crazy and almost makes him fall. Luckly, Remus and Sirius were there, along with professor McGonagall, so everything was fine.
“Merlin’s beard,” exclaims Emmett, “that must have been hell. I don’t know if I could have handled it.”
“You are a lawyer!” Sirius says with surprise, “you see criminals on a daily basis."
“Yeah, but from a healthy distance.” Remus smiles and keeps telling them the details.
“And how’s Harry? Is he alright?” Elle asks.
“He’s fine, he wasn’t even that scared,” says Remus, “as soon as the broom was manageable, he went back to the game.”
“Like a true gryffindor.” Sirius comments.
“And his team won by far, so he really didn’t care about the incident,” Remus says with certain exasperation, but also fondness for the kid.
“Jesus,” Elle exclaims, “I’m still gonna tell Albus a couple of things. That’s why I wasn’t a fan of the idea of Harry playing this young.” She’s angry, but Emmett knows it’s because she’s worried about little Harry.
“No need. We already talk to Minnie,” says Sirius after taking a sip of wine. “Although, there was something peculiar about all these.”
“Like what?” Emmett asks.
“I heard Harry talking to his friends after talking to Minnie, they were saying, well…” Remus isn’t sure, which is strange of him.
“Remus?” Elle insists carefully. She doesn’t want to push them, but she needs to know if they want for her to be calm.
“They were accusing Snape of something, but I couldn’t understand them because of all the noise.”
“Snape?”
“Yes, and when we asked him if there was something we needed to know, he didn’t say a thing.”
Everyone at the table remained silent. It’s unusual for Remus to spy other’s conversations, but if he’s worried about Harry… well, everyone is concerned. Emmett looks at his wife, probably thinking the same as him.
“Harry is not the kind of kid who keeps secrets.” Emmett says aloud to ease the atmosphere. “He would talk to any of us if it would be something serious.”
“Yeah, we know…” Remus says, resigned. “He hadn’t mentioned anything to you guys?”
“No,” both denied, however, Sirius keeps looking at Elle. There were occasions where Harry had gone to Elle for advice without telling any of his guardians. Sirius was the angriest at the time, but since nobody got hurt and Harry talked to them about the problem eventually, Sirius calmed down. This could be one of those times. “I swear it.” She promises and everybody exhales peacefully.
“Well, that settles everything.” All of them look at Emmett. “If it’s something we should worry about, Harry will talk to any of us. He knows he can trust us with anything, no one on this table will leave him alone, much less to keep a secret that could put him in danger.” Everyone agrees. “It will be fine, we just have to be patient.”
It’s not the answer Sirius and Remus wanted, but at least it will bring them peace. Emmett knows that Elle, on the other hand, won’t drop it. She’s a seeker of truth, after all, but she will wait. She has to. Maybe at Christmas they can talk to Harry. Hopefully.
“Now, who wants more wine?” More than one hand raises their cups.
***
Christmas was better than expected. Elle got the chance to meet Ron and all his family. Who knew there were still huge families? Elle loved them, specially the little girl, Ginny, she can see the girl has fire in her soul. The twins, on the other hand, are really troubled. They are prankers, and the fact they got along with Sirius is concerning… but at least they make Harry laugh.
Elle tried to talk with him, but they didn’t have a chance, every Weasley wanted his attention, and the couple of times they were alone, Harry didn't say a thing. Since when is he so sneaky?
“I told you, love. He will talk when he’s ready.” Emmett says, hugging her near the Christmas tree.
“But if it’s too late?”
“My love, Harry is a smart kid, he has a support system, unlike before, he will come to you eventually.”
Elle sights and hugs his husband tightly. She knows he’s right, still, she can’t help but worry. When she first saw Harry, it broke her heart. He was so thin and neglected… Gosh, the bruises still give her nightmares. That day she vowed to never let him get hurt. But she can’t control life itself. One day he will be hurt, she just wishes she’s smart enough to help him.
“Aunt Elle! Aunt Elle!” Harry runs to them. “We will open the presents, come!” He’s beaming with such excitement that she smiles.
“Let’s go.”
***
Dear aunt Elle,
I know old castles hide secrets, especially one with magic, but I never expected to find weird objects in Hogwarts like the Mirror of Erised. I’m pretty sure Moony and Padfoot already told you about the incident, and I swear I will catch up with my school work, but I can’t stop thinking about it. Imagine seeing what your heart most desires in the entire world… and then it’s taken from you. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy with my life, I love all of you guys, truly. It’s just… It was nice to see my biological parents there, hugging me, being next to me. I don’t understand, how can I miss someone who I have never met? Now I feel like garbage, I feel like I’m turning my back on you guys, but that wasn’t my intention. I swear I’ll do better.
Ron and Hermione have been really good friends. Ron helps me to forgive that mirror, and Hermione helps me with my homework, so there’s that. Besides, since I’m grounded for walking around at night, I have too much time to catch up, I’m even reading about history! It was Hermione’s idea. Do you know, per chance, a wizard named Nicholas Flamel? I think I read something about him not long ago, but I can’t remember, maybe you know something? Anyways, I’ll keep writing, good luck with your work!
With love,
Harry P.
“You read it?” She asks Emmett, but he keeps silent. “Love?”
“Yes, I finished it.” He leaves the letter on the table, his furrowed eyebrows.
“What do you think?”
“It breaks my heart he didn’t have the chance to meet his parents. No kid should feel like that.”
“I know. I don’t like it either. I already told him that, despite not knowing them, he shouldn’t feel bad about missing them.” She says, worried.
“But…”
“You didn’t see it?”
“That he’s hiding something? Yes. What’s up with that Nicholas Flamel?”
“I know! I don’t know what’s going on. Maybe I should visit him…”
“No.”
“What? Why?” She is so surprised by his refusal that she stops walking from one side to the other.
“I mean, just think about it,” Emmett says calmly, “what’s something our clients do when we pressure them for answers?”
“They run away.” She sighs, angry that her husband has a point. “He will lie or he will stop trusting me.”
“Exactly.” Emmett is also nervous about this whole situation, but he must be the voice of reason. “I know it sucks, even I’m getting worried, but unless he talks to us, we can’t do much about it. What if we get him in more trouble? What if it’s actually nothing that bad? We need to wait.” The last part says Emmett resigned. It’s just then that Elle understands that not only she is worried sick for all of this.
“We don’t have a choice, do we?” She hugs him, placing her head where his heart is.
“I wish I could give you options.” She holds her hand tightly.
“Well, we can make our own options.” Emmett looks at her, confused. “Let’s research about this Nicholas Flamel.” Emmett looks at her in wonder and smiles.
“That’s my girl.”

Dear Harry,
How on Earth are you grounded once more? And for hiding a baby dragon?! I understand Hagrid is your friend, but a dragon??? They are dangerous creatures, even when they are babies. I’m glad you saved the creature by sending him to a dragon reserve, but honey, that was the job of the headmaster, not yours. Please, I’m begging you, be careful, be smart, think before you do something that’s highly illegal. I will talk to you when you get home, meanwhile, enjoy your punishment. I don’t want to hear you disobey your teachers, again.
With love,
E. W-R.
Dear aunt Elle,
I know all of you are mad about the dragon thing, and I’m sorry, I didn’t want the dragon to be in danger, Hagrid truly loves him. But aunt, something weird happened when I was in the Forbidden Forest… I… I don’t even know how to explain. I was there with Malfoy, looking for an injured unicorn, but we saw a dark figure… drinking the unicorn’s blood… Aunt, I was really scared. Malfoy got the chance to run, but I didn’t, and that thing… as he was getting closer, my head hurt so much it felt like it was breaking apart. Lucky, Firenze saved me, it’s a centaur. He told me that drinking unicorn’s blood is like a curse, you get to live, but only half life or something like that. It sounded desperate. Hermione thinks it was… Voldemort.
I don’t know aunt, I don’t know what to think. I already told Moony and Sirius about all of this, but I want to know your opinion. Hermione says that as long as Professor Dumbledore is here, I’m safe, he’s the only wizard more powerful than Voldemort, but I’m afraid. I thought he was dead, what if he comes back and finishes his job? I defeated him when I was a baby, that doesn’t mean I could do it now. What am I supposed to do? I know that all of you will protect me, but aunt… can I see you? Can you come to Hogwarts? I… I need you, aunt.
With love,
Harry P.

Before Harry entered Hogwarts, Elle already had an office in Hogsmeade. A long time ago, when Emmett and Elle were still dating, each one had their flat. Emmett got one near Diagon Alley, and Elle found one in Hogsmeade. It was far from one another, but they made it work. Once they got married, they decided to rent it. Lucky for her, it wasn’t being used, so she settled and waited for the kids.
Elle's flat was easy to spot for the kids, still, Hagrid guided them, despite having permission to leave the school for this meeting, they were on high alert. Once the three kids entered to the living room, it was unmistakable Elle’s style: pink velvet curtains, a plush rug that looked like it was made for a Kneazle to sleep on, and a mahogany desk covered in colorful feathers and scrolls neatly arranged in folders with glossy tabs. In one corner, the crackling fire in the fireplace beckoned you to relax and have a cup of tea.
“This is your aunt’s office?” Hermione asks, clearly disgusted by all the pink. However, Elle didn’t let him defend her.
“Harry!” She exclaimed, finally giving him a big hug that made him blush. "I’m so happy to see you.”
“Aunt!” He protests, but doesn’t let her go. Once she calms herself, Elle sees the others.
“And you came with your friends. I'm glad you make a habit of seeking advice before doing something reckless.” At least the three of them look guilty.
“Sorry aunt, it’s just…”
“We wanted to be sure before saying anything to an adult.” Ron excuses themselves.
“Well, I’m glad you finally reached one of us. Please, have a seat, and tell me everything.” She says with certain relief. The kids sit on the couch and she serves them some biscuits and tea.
“Aunt, this is serious.” Harry warns her, so she adopts the posture she uses with her clients: calm, relaxed, serious, open minded, and putting all her attention on them.
“Alright. I’m listening.”
“We believe Professor Snape is trying to steal the Philosopher’s Stone.” Hermione clears her throat after throwing such a bomb. She seems nervous but there’s also certain determination in her voice. Elle raised her eyebrows, took out her wand, and with a flick of her wrist, conjured more biscuits for them.
“Right, let’s start like any good case: with evidence.” Harry and Ron exchanged glances as Hermione mentally ran through a list.
“Snape was at the Quidditch match, clearly trying to enchant Harry’s broom. We saw him. Also, he’s always lurking around near the third floor, and… his behavior is suspicious.”
Elle takes notes with a quill pen that writes in pink ink, and once Hermione finishes, she hides her smile. When Emmett and Elle made their investigation about Nicholas Flamel, they discovered he made the Philosopher’s Stone. They were hoping that whatever was happening at Hogwarts, the stone didn’t have to do anything with Harry. Huh, Emmett lost their bet.
“I’m going to teach you something I always repeat in the wizarding court,” she said, resting her elbows on the armchair armrest. “Suspicion is not the same as proof. Just because someone is unpleasant doesn’t make them guilty.” Ron crossed his arms, frowning.
“So… Snape can’t be the villain?”
“I didn’t say that,” Elle raised a finger, in a teacherly tone. “What I’m saying is, if you want to understand what’s going on, you need to look for patterns and motivations. Who benefits from the Stone being stolen? Who has the knowledge to do it? And above all: what would Snape gain?” Harry bit his lower lip. He hadn't thought about that.
Hermione thoughtfully added, “so we should look beyond Snape?”
“Exactly,” Elle nodded. "In law, if you focus only on the most obvious suspect, you risk missing the real culprit. Justice and truth demand that we open our eyes and question our first impressions.” The three of them fell silent, processing her words. It was Harry who spoke first.
“So… you think we should investigate further before making accusations?” Elle knows she’s walking on thin ice.
“Not exactly. I mean, that's what a good lawyer, and a good wizard, should always do. Trust your instincts, but back them up with evidence, but that’s something you guys shouldn’t be doing.” The warning is clear. As much as they want to investigate, they don’t have to put themselves in danger.
“But aunt!” Harry protests.
Elle gets why he wants to investigate. There’s a possibility that the same wizard that killed his parents is after him now, they will always be connected for that, but she doesn’t want him to be in more danger than necessary. But she remembers Emmett’s words: sometimes the more we want to protect someone, the more we push them away. She doesn’t want that.
“Honey, it’s…” damn, Sirius will get mad with her for this, “look, I’m just saying that if you want to get to the bottom of these, just remember, the truth doesn't always wear black… sometimes it hides under many layers.”
The kids stay for a while, telling her all their suspicions and their own investigation about the Stone. Elle must confess there’s a theory that, the more she thinks about, the more alarming it gets. Maybe it’s time to talk to the Headmaster in person. Once the kids left, she telephoned Emmett and told him about the meeting and her theory.
“You must talk to Albus, I’ll talk to Sirius and Remus.”
“Agreed. I love you.”
“I love you too, I’ll see you soon.”
“See you soon.” They hang up and she takes her things immediately. It’s time for a visit.
***
Professor McGonagall was kind enough to escort her to the Headmasters office, and also to let her see the famous forbidden corridor while they were waiting for Emmett, Remus and Sirius. It seems normal, like the rest of the castle, which, by the way, was amazing. She didn’t imagine there were many stairs, it’s almost unhuman. Now she gets why Harry has better endurance.
However, when she hears echoes of footsteps getting closer, she turns around and sees the famous Severus Snape rounded the corner, his distinctive black cloak billowing like a bat. He locks a door with enchantments when he finds himself face to face with Elle.
Elle, on the other hand, wearing (an unorthodox touch at Hogwarts), stood watching him,
“Professor Snape,” she said with a perfectly cordial smile. “What a coincidence to find you here, in a forbidden corridor.” Looking at her with a fuchsia robe, a folder of parchment tucked under her arm and her wand tucked away in her bag, must have been unexpected because he didn’t say anything for a couple of seconds. Once he composed himself, he narrowed his eyes.
“Mrs. Woods… what are you doing meddling in matters that clearly exceed your… limited competence?” Despite his words, she didn't lose her smile.
“Oh, I'm not interfering. I'm just making sure everything is done within the bounds of school and Ministry regulations.” She paused dramatically, producing a scroll with a flourish. “And according to Hogwarts regulations, Article Four, Section Three: Professors must not enter restricted areas without express authorization from the Headmaster, isn’t that right?” She knows she’s right, she already did her research. Snape raises an eyebrow, irritated.
“Your theatrics are unnecessary. Dumbledore knows my every move.”
“I sure he does,” Elle inclined her head, as if confirming something in a plea. “But do the others know? Because, you see, when three eleven-year-old students begin to suspect you're up to no good with the Philosopher's Stone, I, as a lawyer and a concerned citizen, have to ask: how much of that perception is due to your suspicious behavior... and how much to your reputation as 'favorite villain'?” Snape pressed his lips together, his gaze pure venom.
“Are you implying I’m guilty of something?”
“Not at all!” Elle raised her hands, conciliatory. “I’m simply pointing out that in the court of public opinion, and believe me, not only the corridors of Hogwarts are a hotbed of it, you’d be found guilty in less than five minutes. What I’m interested in is: wouldn’t it be in your best interest, Professor, to clear your name with concrete actions instead of… dramatic appearances in forbidden places?”
The silence stretched for a few seconds, until Snape murmures, his voice low and dangerous, “you don’t understand anything that’s going on here.” Elle smiles with a glimmer of triumph.
“Perhaps. But I understand one thing very well: if you want to protect the Stone, the best strategy isn’t to appear to be the prime suspect.” She leaned slightly toward him, lowering her voice. “And if you’re truly on Dumbledore’s side, you should start acting like a visible ally… not like an antagonist to first-years.” Snape inhaled deeply, turned, and vanished into the shadows, his cloak thumping the floor.
Elle watches him walk away and whispers to herself, “that went well.” She sights and goes back to the main corridor. At least Emmett and her two friends were already there with Professor McGonagall.
“Elle, is it true? Your theory?” Remus asks, worried, all of them were, even the professor.
“I don’t know for sure, let’s hurry and talk to the Headmaster.”
“Yes, let’s go.” Sirius says and all of them hurried to the office.
***
The fire in the fireplace crackled softly, illuminating the strange clocks and glittering dials that filled the study. Fawkes slept on his perch, his feathers glowing like soft embers. Dumbledore, his hands folded on the desk, looked up as the door opened with a light tap. Elle and the others entered, but she did it with such confidence that he put his parchment to the side.
“Albus,” Sirius said with urgency, “we need to talk.”
“It’s about Harry's safety.” Remus clarifies.
“And about the Stone.” Emmett contributes, making everyone finches. “What? He knows we know, and we know he knows, there’s no point in hiding it.”
“And also about Professor Snape.” Elle says while taking the seat right in front of her.
“Ah, Severus. I’ve heard rumors that you had a… verbal exchange with him in the Forbidden Corridors.” Albus picks the easiest subject of all to begin. Elle, however, places the folder on the desk, her firm gesture contrasting sharply with the gentleness of her voice.
“Let’s call it what it was, a spontaneous argument.” Everyone looks at her, no one knew she talked to Severus just moments before their encounter. “I cannot allow one of your teachers to behave in a way that makes him look more guilty than a troll in a china shop.” Dumbledore chuckled softly, stroking his beard.
“I suspect Severus didn’t appreciate your advice.”
“Oh, not at all.” Elle sank into a chair, crossing her legs gracefully. “But that’s the point, Albus. These children, Harry, Hermione, and Ron, already believe Snape is after the Stone. And if anything bad happens, believe me, they won’t be blaming anyone else; they’ll be pointing the finger at their favorite bat.” The old wizard watched her silently for a few seconds, then nodded slowly.
“She’s right, Headmaster. Severus doesn’t exactly make it easy for others to understand his true loyalties.” Remus says.
“He shouldn’t even be near Harry!” Sirius, on the other hand, screamed angrily.
“What’s the deal between you two?” Emmett asks, curious for the outburst.
“He’s a coward piece of…”
“Mister Black!” Professor McGonagall, who was standing far from the argument but listening carefully, finally approaches and stands next to the director. “You may be an adult and I’m no longer your teacher, but I will not allow such manners in this school.”
“Sorry Minnie.” Sirius replies sheeplessly. Huh, now Elle finally met the only woman who put in his place the heir of the Noble House of Black.
“Back to business,” Elle calls their attention, lowering her head, serious for a moment. “I know you trust him, Albus, but if he wants to protect not only the Stone but Harry as well, he has to manage perceptions. In my world, the truth isn’t enough: how you look, how you communicate, also matters. And, forgive me, but Hogwarts is just like a courtroom full of gossipy teenagers.” Dumbledore let out a warm laugh, so clear that even Fawkes opened a curious eye.
“You, Elle, have an extraordinary gift for seeing things in a different light. A less... solemn one than mine.” She smiles, leaning forward.
“That's because justice doesn't always is black or white, Albus.” For the first time in a long time, Dumbledore looks genuinely surprised. Then he nods solemnly, a twinkle of amusement in his eye.
“I’ll talk to him.” He agrees.
“Cool, now, what about if we talk about Elle’s theory.”
“What theory?” Professor McGonagall asks.
“Somebody is actually trying to steal the Stone.”
“We know. The break in Gringotts wasn’t a random event.” Albus confirms, worried like the others.
“But we think that person is already here.” Emmett says, catching everyone’s attention. “Look, Elle and I were investigating Harry’s odd questions, the three head dog, the dark figure in the forest, the unicorn’s blood and its properties, even about hexes to brooms, and especially about the Stone.”
“We think the Dark Lord is using someone from the castle to do all of these.” Elle finishes, causing an overwhelming silence. “The kids' investigation, despite being directed to point fingers at Professor Snape, it’s not that wrong.” She exhibits all the documents she and Emmett gathered in their research, along with some questions of their own. “Someone tried to hurt Harry since the first Quidditch match, why? They now know Snape actually saved Harry, but who did it? Who was near him?”
“We know you guard the Stone here, for some reason,” Emmett tried to not sound so judgemental. He failed but he continues. “So, who knew the Stone was here?”
“Practically all the heads of the houses, including Professor Quirell, Hagrid, and Professor Hooch.” Professor McGonagall answers, there’s concern in her tone.
“And talking about Hagrid, we know you must have put magical guards or test to difficult the obtention of Stone, so-”
“Hagrid was the first line defense, right?” Remus interrupts Emmett, putting the pieces together, “he brought the dog, Fluffy, isn’t he?” Albus nods.
“Which leads us to something the kids spot.” Elle took a pause, but she remained firm. “Harry told me that Hagrid always wanted a dragon, he told him from the first moment they met, so, isn't it weird a stranger carried a dragon egg in his pocket when he took the night off?”
“They are extremely difficult to carry around, even when it’s an egg and you have all the documentation. How did this stranger know where to find Hagrid that specific night?”
“The Dark Lord is using the unicorn’s blood to remain alive, but a life like that it’s almost nothing, especially since he was defeated, so…”
“He needs the Stone to resurrect completely.” Sirius finishes, standing up in panic.
“Albus, who else knew all this information?” Elle presses the Headmaster, the fact that he didn’t deny her suspicions makes her right about the worst scenario. They were running out of time.
“Hagrid was the first line of defense,” Albus agrees, also standing up and walking from one side to the other, “Pomona put the plants, Filius and Rolanda work together for the key thing…” He looks at Professor McGonagall, to make sure he has the right order.
“Yes. Then I put the chess trap, and after me Severus uses his knowledge in potions and riddles as the final test.”
“Ok, all of you are trusting, we know, but then, who is helping the Dark Lord?!” Sirius is going on a spiral, he’s frenetic. Everyone remains silent. “You know what? You keep thinking, I’m going to get Harry and we will get the hell out of here until you find the traitor.”
Everyone tries to calm him down, but even Elle is getting anxious. They need to find the traitor, true, but who could it be? Who could be someone so sneaky that not even the great Dumbledore spotted him or her? Who could gain the trust of every teacher and student in Hogwarts? Who came up with the idea of these trials if not an expert… Oh damn!
“Albus!” Elle screams, making everyone stop their own screams. “Professor Quirell was the one who came up with the idea of the trials?”
The Headmasters open his eyes so big that it could have been fun if not for the imminent danger. The more she thinks about it, the more certain she is. Professor Quirell is new, true, but he had a reputation of being competent, why did he change so much in just a couple of weeks? He stutters and tries not to call attention, why? ‘Who could be so sneaky…?’, she had thought.
“Fuck.” Albus exclaims and quickly makes a spell to communicate with Professor Snape. “Severus, where is Professor Quirrell?”
“I was about to contact you about him. I can’t find him, why-?”
“Find him! Now!” Albus orders with a deep voice that even paralyzed Elle. “He’s the traitor!”
Those simple words put Snape to work. Everyone runs to the third corridor while Emmett and Elle make sure to clear the passage. Sirius and Remus went with the teachers without doubting, leaving Elle and her husband behind.
A couple of years ago, the four of them talked about a life insurance for Harry in case something happened to his guardians. Elle dealt with the paperwork, but while doing so, they agree that, in the worst case scenario, she and Emmett will take Harry with them to keep him safe. Sirius and Remus knew they could trust in them with such responsibility, besides they love Harry so much they knew they wouldn’t let him alone.
An eternity went by when Harry found them. Elle didn’t want to, but she vowed to be honest with him, all the time, even with the ugly thing, so they told him what was going on, their suspicions being correct, and the treason of Professor Quirrell.
“Oh my… and Padfoot? Moony?” Harry asks with tears in his eyes. But before anyone could ask, a little earthquake felt through all Hogwarts.
“No time. Elle, do it.” He’s firm, so decisive that breaks Elle's heart. They also made an escape plan.
“Come Harry, now.” She takes his hand and runs to the Headmasters office.
The plan was that, if something doesn’t seem right, they will take Harry to the Headmaster’s office, and if it’s necessary, they will leave using the Floo Network and hide until they know they are safe. Emmett would stay behind to make sure they made it.
Elle pushes those thoughts to the bottom of her head and concentrates on her duty: keep Harry safe. When they reach the office, she sees that his friends follow them along. It’s fine for her, she will do what it takes to keep them safe. She settles everything for a quick escape and waits.
The worst part of a fight is the waiting. Despite her being prepared, and even the kids with their wands ready, they have to wait for a signal, any kind of signal. Another eternity goes by when they hear the scrams.
“Elle! Harry!” She exhales deeply, it’s Emmett. When the door bursts open, it’s him with a relieved face. “They got him. Everyone is safe.” Before she could do anything, the others entered the office.
“Harry! Pup!” Sirius and Remus run to Harry and hug him tightly.
“What happened?” She asks, hugging her husband with all the force she’s capable of.
“I’m not sure, his soul disappeared, but Quirrell is dead, he couldn’t hold on to power any longer.” She nods, still worried, but more relieved they are safe and avoid a tragedy.
“Well, let’s hope the worst has passed.” She says, looking at how Harry hugs his friends, also relieved.
‘It’s a huge package for a kid’, she can’t help but think.
***
The rest of the school year went smoothly. Sure, there was no DADA teacher, but they managed. Surprisingly, Gryffindor won the house cup, apparently, you can gain points by making a good investigation that avoided a tragedy.
Harry got good grades, mostly thanks to Hermoine’s determination, but he did it better since there were no worries to deal with, even Ron had amazing results, she knew Hermione will be a good friend. The three of them promised to visit each other, so Elle is sure Harry will have a good summer.
The four adults, however, promised to look for information about how the Dark Lord survived. It will be difficult, none of them are experts in dark magic, but they will do anything to keep Harry safe. Besides, they will have the help from Albus and Snape, so they will find a solution, Elle is confident about that.
Once she was in her office, drinking her coffee and reading some papers, someone knocked on her door. It’s Harry.
“Honey? What are you doing here? I thought you were going to Hermoine and Ron to the movies.”
“I will. I just…” he remains standing in the middle of the room.
“What darling? Is everything alright?” She’s nervous again, but fights her fears to remain calm.
“I just wanted to say… thank you.”
“What for?” She’s genuinely surprised.
“You believed me, and didn’t push me for answers. Thank you.” Oh.
“I will always believe you, my boy,” she hugs him tenderly, “and no matter what, don’t forget you can trust in us with anything.”
“I know. Thanks.” He smiles at her with such happiness and trust that almost makes her cry.
Harry is her boy. Yes, she isn’t his mom, and she will never try to take that place, but she loves him very much, and she will do anything in her power to keep him safe and sound. If she has to fight Death itself, so be it. Harry deserves a happy life, and she will make sure of that. At least the Stone is destroyed, so the Dark Lord will have to fight harder if he wants to make it. If he succeeds, she will be ready, who says that only spells can destroy? He won’t be ready for her heels.
