Don't hide from me

Summary:

Just tell her Doctor, just tell her everything.

Work Text:

It had been two days and the Doctor was still ignoring her. "What are you doing?" Yaz asked, and the Doctor refused to look up, fiddling with the controls on the console. "It has been two days, are you going to ignore me forever?" Yaz didn't expect an answer, she wasn't to be disappointed. So with just silence as a response she walked out, and went to her bedroom. Throwing herself face first into her pillow she started crying, would she ever be forgiven?

"The Tokins are a peaceful race Yaz, but for some reason they are fighting amongst themselves, best to see if we can help."
"Or you could leave them to it, it is not your job to fix everything wrong in the universe." Yaz replied, but the Doctor was not having it.
"Why not?" She asked.
"Because."
"Because what?"
"Just because."
"Well you can stay here and twiddle your thumbs, because I am going to go with or without you." With that the doors opened and the Doctor stepped out. Yaz was going to follow but thought better of it, just let her get on with it. Since Graham and Ryan had left, the Doctor was even more evasive, not stopping to think about Yaz's feelings. The Flux had been extinguished but the Doctor was still hiding things from her, and she had just got worse.

It had been a few hours, and Yaz was bored. Reluctantly she went out looking for the Doctor. She had only taken a couple of steps before something struck the back of her head. She crumpled to the ground, the last thing she heard before losing consciousness was the door of the TARDIS being opened, then it was lights out.

Groaning Yaz felt the back of her head, no blood but she was getting a splitting headache. She sat up and turned around, the TARDIS was gone. "Oh fuck." Yaz said, the Doctor is going to be livid. She stood up and looked at her surroundings, there was not much to look at. Just tall white buildings as far as her eyes could see, not that they were all intact, looked like a bomb had hit the place, which if there was fighting it was possible. Deciding to find the Doctor she took a step, then thought better of it. Her head was pounding, she didn't know where she went, and the TARDIS was gone. Maybe it would be wise to stay put, so finding a bench of some type she sat down and waited. She had no idea how long she had been there, she had passed out again. When she opened her eyes and looked ahead, she was looking directly into a face of fire, the Doctor. "Where is the TARDIS Yaz?"
"Someone hit me on the back of my head and took it."
"Oh, you stupid woman."
"Hey don't call me that, it wasn't my fault."
"Whose fault was it? Who refused to go with me, and instead left the TARDIS to be stolen?"
"I am sorry."
"Great, you are sorry, brilliant." She walked off, and Yaz shouted after her.
"Where are you going?"
"To get my TARDIS back, just stay there." Then she was gone again,

Yaz waited, probably best if the Doctor let off some steam. But if she continued like this then it was time to move on with her life, away from her. Being with the Doctor had been the best, but now it was becoming a chore.

It had been a couple of hours, then the Doctor came striding back, a contraption of some kind in her hand. Ignoring Yaz she held it in the air, and pointed it upwards. Nothing happened for a minute, then the unmistakable noise of the TARDIS materializing filled the air, and Yaz could now smile. The Doctor opened the door, and closed it behind her. Yaz waited, was she going to leave her? It was just a passing thought, as the doors opened and a figure was pushed out, falling to the floor. It got up and scurried away. Yaz ignored it and followed the Doctor back in the TARDIS. Yaz said she was sorry again, but the Doctor ignored her, and did for days.

The Doctor watched Yaz as she stormed out, and she sighed. She was still angry with her, and when a Timelord was angry they tend to be angry for awhile. Of course Yaz hadn't meant for the TARDIS to be stolen, and she should get over it. But for some reason everything in her life had turned to shit and she wasn't too sure of herself. Her past was not her past, the Flux had destroyed while she was looking the other way. She should have caught it quicker, she could have prevented a lot of suffering, she hated herself. She was old and forgiving most of the time, but at this moment she couldn't forgive herself.

Yaz slipped out the TARDIS, without even saying goodbye. The Doctor ignored her, and as the doors closed she only then looked up.

Three months and Yaz was happy, she bit the bullet and got her job back. She was happy to only having to start halfway, and not having to start a probational period all over again from the start. Her family had questions she couldn't really answer, she had contacted Graham and Ryan, who were out in the world, and Dan who was settled down with Di. Yaz was left alone.

Six more months had passed, she had moved out, and got herself a girlfriend. She kissed Cate as she left for work, her probational period was over. She had worked hard for it, now she wasn't gallivanting around the universe. Did she miss the Doctor? Sometimes. But she knew what she did was for her own benefit, chasing around with someone who wouldn't let her in, and treat her as an equal all the time was just a waste of time.

"Are you okay Yaz?" Bob asked, a slightly older officer Yaz had been paired up with. She said yes, she was fine, she was okay. She wasn't fine, she wasn't okay, she was feeling sick. First dead body, she was barely keeping it together. Her life was not good, Cate had left her, she was sick of Yaz's long hours, and aversion to talking about her feelings. Hakim had a heart attack, and Sonya was being Sonya, a pain in the ass. All in all Yaz was struggling, and the more she struggled inwardly the more the strain she was putting on the people around her.
Things came to the boil when some drunk had decided he wanted to grope her bottom, and so she broke his arm. Suspended and put on leave she decided to self-destruct, and nobody could help her.

Just over a year after leaving the Doctor Yaz tried to take her own life, it was more like a cry for help. She had phoned Sonya, who had been concerned enough to call the police. She had taken a lot of pills, and had drank half a bottle of vodka, and when Sonya let them in with her spare key she wept for her sister. Thankfully she was rushed to hospital in time, having her stomach pumped.

Yaz took stock of her life, she hated what she had become, and decided that she wasn't going to let it define who she was, who she should be. She knew she had to leave the Doctor, but it still hurt after all this time, she needed to be strong, not for anybody but herself. She had left the police and opened up a florist, not something she would ever of thought of doing. But she met a friend from school, and Danny had wanted a partner to start up a business, and so he had roped Yaz in.

She had never been happier, nearly three years since walking out and Yaz loved nothing more than going home and cuddling Ben. Ben not as fond of the cuddles, squirming out of her grasp and running out into the garden. She watched the cocker spaniel racing around the garden and laughed. Hearing the doorbell she went to the front door, opening it up to a stranger.
"Hello Yaz." He said, beaming.
"Sorry, am I supposed to know who you are?" She asked.
"Babes, it is the Doctor, sorry I have not been around, busy life."
"Well that's nice, goodbye." She closed the door, and walked away. The doorbell rang again, and she was going to ignore it. She knew the Doctor was going to change, but she still hated her, him for the way she treated her. But she was curious enough to answer the door again. This time she was faced with a young woman, blonde hair, rather attractive. "You don't know me but I know you, he has never stopped talking about you, my name is Ruby." The woman went to shake Yaz's hand but she ignored it.
"Look that was my life, but it is not my life any more and I am over her, him. So if there is nothing more." She raised an eyebrow, and Ruby smiled.
"He thought maybe I could change your mind, we need you, he needs you."
"Didn't need me when he basically made it difficult to be in his presence. Fuck it's so difficult saying he, she was the love of my life."
"Did you ever tell the Doctor that?" Ruby asked, but Yaz shook her head.
"Guess not, not sure if it would have made a blind bit of difference. So what am I needed for?"

Nervous as hell, she approached the TARDIS, with Ruby in tow, and opening up and going in she was stuck with the vastness of it. "Wow."
"It is bigger on the inside." The Doctor said, making Ruby laugh.
"I think Yaz knows that."
"Yeah forgot. So what do you think?" He smiled and Yaz shook her head.
"It's different, I give you that. So what is it you want Doctor?"
"Straight to the point, good. Basically I might have done something stupid." Yaz looked over at Ruby, and they both smiled, nothing new there. "I have caused a rip in time, and I need someone to go through it and close it."
"Go through it then."
"I can't, I can't meet me. But if you could help, that would be good."
"Well if it has happened then you already know if I go, I do know something about rips in time."
"Of course Yaz, but the rip will close and the universe will be changed, mended. I won't remember any of this."
"But I will meet me, and I have a life here, family, a dog, a shop."
"Ooh, is a corner shop? No wait, does not matter. Look you can still have those things again, but it is time sensitive. We have about an hour before this universe folds in itself. You will fade after a few seconds when you walk through, there will only be you, when the universe rights itself."
"I don't know, and I don't have time to decide. I am going to have to trust you." She said, and the Doctor beamed.
"Honey you do this and I will love you forever. Aah, shouldn't have said that." He saw how Yaz's face fell.
"Let's do this before I change my mind."

Yaz looked out, the rip in time was shimmering, a few feet in the air, over the sea. She looked back and saw the Doctor, arm in arm with Ruby. Maybe the Doctor learned something after all. They had said their goodbyes, and all Yaz needed to do was step through, she stepped through.

"The Tokins are a peaceful race Yaz, but for some reason they are fighting amongst themselves, best to see if we can help."
"Sure, but I want you to promise me something."
"What?"
"Just promise."
"I can't until you tell me what I need to promise."
"I want you to tell me everything that has happened to you, no more hiding things, no more shutting me out."
"Fine."
"You promise?"
"I promise, cross my hearts." She did just that, and Yaz smiled, and the Doctor smiled back.
"Well what are we waiting for, let's see what we can do." Yaz said as she followed the Doctor out.
