A Date Among the Stars

Summary:

Two months after recovering from her injury, (Y/N) is surprised when Senku secretly invites her to meet him at sundown—not for work, but for something personal. He leads her to a forest clearing where he reveals a telescope he built just for them, wanting her to see the stars the way he does. The quiet, intimate “science date” deepens their bond, with Senku awkwardly but sincerely admitting she makes everything—including science—better.

When they return, they’re unexpectedly swept into a lively village festival filled with lanterns, music, and teasing friends. Despite trying to stay composed, Senku’s jealousy and attention toward (Y/N) are obvious as she dances with others. Eventually, she pulls him into a dance, softening him completely.

As the night ends, they release lanterns into the river, each carrying silent wishes. In a rare moment of vulnerability, Senku gently kisses her hand, admitting the night mattered because she was there—leaving them both standing together in a warm, glowing moment of quiet affection.

Notes:

Welcome to the eighteenth story in my Ishigami Senkuu x reader! I hope you enjoy this one! I'm a sucker for starry night dates or festival dates so this was a blast to write out LOL

Work Text:

Two months after your injury, you were whole again.

No more deep aches when you moved.

No more dizziness.

No more Senku hovering like a bespectacled hawk every time you stood up.

…Okay, he still hovered.

Just more subtly.

But today felt different.

He had asked you—actually asked you—to meet him behind his lab hut after sundown.

Not come help me, not hold this, not I need an extra pair of hands.

Just a small folded piece of partchment slipped into the corner of your journal that said "Meet me behind the lab at sun down. Don't be late. -Senku"

The note made you grin as you smoothes out the creases and tucked it away again before going about your day. You knew what Senku really meant.

He had planned something. Something that he wanted you to know about but didn't need your help with; which might as well been his way of saying 'I have a surprise for you and if you find out what it is before I'm ready I'll panic'.

You showed up, right as the sun was setting. The sky turning all sorts of pretty shades of pink and purple.

It was sweet in a way. Senku knew that sun down was your favorite time of day too.

As you rounded the corner of the hut Senku stood there waiting, hands in his pockets, hair catching the golden light like lightning frozen mid-strike.

His expression softened when he saw you.

“Good,” he said. “You’re on time.”

You smiled. “You’re nervous.”

He scoffed. “Am not.”

You raised an eyebrow.

He looked away—very fast.

“…Maybe a little,” he admitted under his breath.

Your smile widened.

He cleared his throat sharply. “Anyway. Follow me.”

The Science Date

He led you away from the village, deeper into the forest.

The path was easy—leaves crunching softly, fireflies drifting lazily between trunks, the air cool and smelling faintly of pine.

At one point, he glanced back, checking if you were keeping up.

You bumped his shoulder lightly. “I’m fine. Healed, remember?”

He made a quiet noise in his throat. “Doesn’t mean I stop checking.”

Your heart warmed in your chest.

Finally, you reached a clearing.

The canopy overhead opened wide, revealing a broad patch of sky.

In the center of the clearing stood a contraption roughly the height of your torso—wooden legs, metal rings, a polished glass plate angled upward.

You stopped walking.

Your breath caught.

“Senku… is that…?”

He stepped beside you, crossing his arms lightly.

“Yep.”

A soft smile tugged at his lips.

“A telescope.”

Your hand flew to your mouth.

“You… you built a telescope?”

“For us,” he said simply. “For tonight.”

Us.

Not the village.

Not a demonstration.

Not a scientific necessity.

Us.

You turned to him, eyes wide.

“Senku… this must’ve taken—”

“Three weeks,” he said. “I worked on it after you went to sleep.”

You stared.

He shrugged, trying to be casual, but his ears went pink.

“It was worth it,” he said quietly. “I wanted to show you something.”

Your chest swelled warm and full.

“Then show me,” you whispered.

He guided you to the telescope, adjusting the angle with careful turns of a wooden crank.

“Look,” he murmured. “Right there.”

You leaned down, peering through the lens.

Your breath vanished.

Stars—bright, sharp, clear as diamonds scattered across velvet—filled your view.

You gasped softly.

“It’s beautiful,” you whispered.

Senku’s presence hovered just behind your shoulder, close enough that you felt the warmth of him.

“Yeah,” he murmured. “It is.”

You smiled, still looking at the stars. “You meant the sky, right? Not… me?”

Silence.

Then, very quietly:

“…Both.”

You turned to him slowly.

He didn’t look away this time.

His red eyes reflected starlight—calm, steady, open in a way they so rarely were.

You stepped closer.

“You made this… for me?”

“For us,” he corrected. “Because science is… better when you’re there.”

Your heart flipped.

“I didn’t know telescopes existed yet,” you said softly.

“They didn’t,” he replied. “Not until today.”

You laughed breathlessly.

His thumb brushed your wrist absentmindedly.

“You always want to understand everything,” he said. “I thought you should see the world the way I see it too.”

You touched his cheek gently.

“Thank you,” you whispered.

He leaned—very slightly—into your hand.

“Don’t go thanking me,” he murmured. “This is just the beginning.”

The Festival Lights

The walk back to the village was warm and quiet—your fingers brushing his, his shoulder occasionally bumping yours on purpose.

As you neared the entrance, you noticed something strange.

Lights.

Soft glows flickered between huts.

Lanterns—woven from vines and rice paper—hung from branches.

Music drifted through the air.

Voices.

Laughter.

You blinked. “Senku…?”

He smirked. “I didn’t plan this part.”

The moment you stepped into the clearing, Chrome spotted you.

“HEY! They’re back!”

Gen threw up his arms. “FINALLY. The stars aligned and the lovebirds descend upon the festival!”

Senku threw a rock at him.

Gen dodged.

“See?” Gen cackled. “Romantic tension AND good aim!”

Taiju waved both arms. “(Y/N)!!! SENKU!!! COME ON!! You HAVE to see the food—!”

Yuzuriha hurried over, beaming. “We saved you seats!”

Kohaku marched up next. “We’re dancing later.”

Kinro sighed. “We are not dancing.”

Ginro did a little twirl. “I AM.”

“NO YOU’RE NOT,” Kohaku barked.

Suika zipped up next to you, holding a lantern nearly her size.

“(Y/N)!! Senku!! Suika made this lantern just for you two!!”

Your heart melted.

Senku knelt so Suika could place the lantern in his hands.

He ruffled her cape.

“Nice work, Suika.”

She beamed so hard her helmet clacked.

The village was alive with color and light.

Flutes played.

Drums thumped.

People laughed and danced barefoot in the dirt.

Children ran with lanterns.

The air smelled like roasted corn and sweet herbs.

“This is amazing,” you whispered.

Senku shrugged. “Humans like festivals. Good for morale.”

“And for dates?” you teased.

He stiffened faintly.

“…That wasn’t the plan.”

You smirked.

“But I’ll take it,” he muttered.

Dancing, Teasing, and a Flustered Scientist

You were pulled into dancing before Senku could stop it.

By Yuzuriha.

Then by Kohaku.

Then Gen.

Senku tried to stand by the sidelines with his arms crossed, pretending not to watch.

But he watched.

Oh, he watched.

Every time someone spun you, his sharp red eyes narrowed..

Every time someone joked with you, he glared harder.

At one point Chrome almost tripped you and Senku took one threatening step forward causing Chrome immediately yelped, “SORRY SORRY SORRY—I’LL STOP—!!”

You laughed until your ribs ached.

Eventually, you returned to Senku’s side, breathless.

He raised an eyebrow. “Done being dragged around?”

“Only if you dance with me.”

His entire soul left his body for a moment.

“I—what—absolutely not—”

You took his hand.

He stared at your fingers entwining with his.

He sighed dramatically.

“…One dance,” he muttered. “Then we go eat.”

You guided his hand to your waist.

He nearly overheated.

You swayed gently together, the flickering lanterns painting the night gold and white.

For a few precious minutes, the world felt soft.

Quiet.

Warm.

Senku watched you—not the stars, not the science, not the future.

You.

Always you.

Lanterns in the Water

As the festival wound down, villagers carried lanterns to the river’s edge.

You and Senku stood slightly apart from the crowd, a lantern from Suika glowing in your hands.

“Make a wish,” Senku murmured.

You blinked. “You? Believing in wishes?”

“I believe in data,” he said. “And statistically, you like sentimental nonsense. So go ahead.”

You laughed softly.

Then closed your eyes.

Your wish wasn’t complicated.

It wasn’t poetic.

It was simple.

Stay safe.

Stay together.

Stay alive long enough to see the world Senku wants to rebuild.

When you opened your eyes again, Senku was watching you quietly.

“What’d you wish for?” he asked.

You smiled. “I can’t tell you.”

He smirked. “Superstition.”

“Suspense,” you corrected.

And together, you placed the lantern on the water.

It drifted downstream, glowing softly among dozens of others—twinkling like captured constellations.

Senku stepped closer.

Not touching.

But close enough that warmth radiated off him.

“You know,” he said softly, “tonight turned out better than expected.”

You smiled, leaning just slightly into his shoulder.

“I had a perfect night,” you whispered.

Senku’s voice lowered.

“Good.”

Your breath caught.

He looked at you like he was calculating something impossible.

Then—

He lifted your hand and pressed a gentle kiss to the back of it.

Your heart stuttered.

Your breath vanished.

His lips lingered a moment longer than necessary.

Then he murmured:

“Because you were in it.”

He let your hand go—slowly, reluctantly.

The world glowed.

Lanterns drifted like fireflies.

The music faded into soft laughter.

And Senku stood beside you.

Warm.

Alive.

Yours.
