Flying Free

Summary:

PR161: Danny figures out how to make contrails as he flies, and has fun in the skies over Amity Park

Notes:

Work Text:

Danny flies through the skies of Amity Park.

Feeling a touch too warm, under the summer sun, he drops his temperature with a flash of ice on his back.

Relieved, he continues on his flight, only somewhat registering the coolness on the back of his tail.

Looking over his shoulder makes him stop.

A wisping trail of cloud drifts after him.

“Oh,” he says. Freezing his hand and waving it in the air.

Water droplets gather on his glove, dripping down his sleeve.

“Duh,” he giggles.

With a whoop of delight, he flips in the air, creating a looping contrail.

He speeds up, watching as the white contrail follows after.

He looks a head, holding his arms out.

Laughter bubbles up in his throat.

Tucking into a flip, he shoots straight up away from the city.

Speeding up as much as he can, he feels the sound barrier wobble around him.

Until it pops with a boom.

White clouds explode around him, leaving a cone.

He comes to a stop far above the clouds.

He hangs in the air, weightless.

He laughs.

He tilts backwards, head first, he falls.

Letting gravity pull him down faster.

He drops his temperature further.

Feels the water condense and mist off his suit in a cooling sensation.

He tilts, rolling over himself to fly parallel to the city.

Looping, he flips and twirls in the air.

Drawing in the sky with his contrails.

He slows to a stop and turns to look at his handiwork.

In a rather impressive script, PHANTOM is clearly legible in all the clouds.

Clockwork would be proud of his handwriting improvement.

Now if only writing worked the same way.

“What are you doing?” Red’s voice calls out to him.

“Oh, hey Red,” Danny turns to wave, cheeks hurting from how big he’s smiling.

She stills on her hoverboard, still flying closer.

“You’re glowing,” she says.

“I always glow,” Danny rolls his eyes.

“I meant your face,” she waves a hand over her own. “I didn’t know you had freckles.”

“Oh, are they visible?” he puts a hand to his cheek.

“Yeah, they’re hard to miss,” she puts a hand on her hip. “Why are you so glowy?”

“Guess I’m just in a good mood,” Danny shrugs, floating onto his back in a stretch.

“Have anything to do with you marking your territory?”

He barks a laugh.

“Nah, I was just messing around.”

Valerie hums, shifting on her hoverboard to hover next to him as he drifts on the wind.

“You want me to put your name up there?” He asks.

“And make it look like we’re dating? Ew pass.”

“Wow, tell me how you really feel.”

“I could blast you out of the sky for old time’s sake.”

“That I’ll pass on…actually,” he trails off thinking.

“I don’t like that look.”

“What look?”

“The look that you’re thinking up trouble.”

“Me trouble? Never~” he bats his eyes at her.

She shoves a hand in his face and pushes him away. “You’re always trouble.”

Danny laughs, letting her push force him further away.

“I was actually thinking, I don’t think you could catch me anymore.”

“Is that a challenge?” she asks, eyebrow arching.

“Only if you want one,” he smirks, letting his body temperature drop.

“Oh you are on, ghost boy!”

“It’s Phantom,” he laughs, darting into the sky.

“You’ll never hear that from me,” she taunts, catching up easily.

“Wanna bet on it?” he asks, speeding a little faster.

“If I roast your ass, you owe me a new weapon.”

“And if I win, you have to stop calling me ghost boy.”

He holds a hand out to her.

She slaps it in a half grab.

“Deal.”

Danny smiles big.

“Then get ready to eat my contrails!”

He darts ahead, speeding up until the air wobbles again.

He glances over his shoulder to see Valerie out of range.

With a whoop of laughter, the sound barrier breaks.
