Chapter Text

In the mortal realm, a god was always watching. For laughter, for tears, for happiness for mourning, there were too many to say, save for a single fact… a god was always watching. Starved for entertainment their immortal senses could not find in their heavenly realm, they came down to the mortals, to watch and play, granting power in return for a performance, with hopes of a spectacle. Some found their entertainment easily, others with effort, few found pleasures in causing their own spectacle.

However, a certain few would search for years, finding smiles, laughs and tears, here and there, but never what they truly craved. Some were still awaiting that joy they could not find within their immortal realm. Those few watched the hardest, the longest, still searching.

But eventually, they would find it…

In the dungeon city of Orario, the city of adventure where many gods would find their needs sated, a certain goddess sat atop them all, waiting and watching. Her current book forgotten, lying prettily in her lap, awash in the light of the midday sun, as she watched the distant play of mortals and gods. Eyes searching with care, for a specific soul.

Her love.

She searched for his smile, his exhaustion, his pain, his disappointment… it mattered not to her, as long as it was of him, of the one soul abound with light.

A practice once old and tedious, now a treat for her heart, palpitating in loving expectance. Her patience and waiting, as she revolved around the window filled floor, all payed forward with love as the reward.

Today, like everyday since she first set her eye on him, she has waited with a smile that gleamed in her eyes, a curious thing, a thing of interest. It made everything she saw seem new again, a new experience with him. A stroll along the streets of Orario with him, a meal with him, shopping with him, all those old and tired experience seemed new when she imagine them with him. The world was bright and with new expectations.

“She has returned.” The words tasted foul in her mouth, prompting a sip of wine, which did little to wash it away. The child’s faint features enough to turn her insides raw.

“She has. Do you have need of her ma’am?”

Turning a cruel smile, she glanced at the ever stoic face of her faithful guard, finding his eyes closed and resting, making no attempt to seek out the child. Not that she would blame him, her current tone exclusive to said child, an insult that never ceased to blight her.

“Perhaps soon.”

Despite herself, she knew the girl had her uses, even when she was loathed to comply. Truly, it was the only reason she had allowed the girl to persist.

Bearing her displeasure, the goddess took a second glance at the girl. Silver hair, soft eyes, lightly tanned skin… and the cold darkness of her soul, almost dark as pitch, if not for the random reflections of light. A life akin to an impure gem, reflecting everything it saw, if only for a moment, before losing even that. That was all she was, yet even then, Freya could never look away. For even in that darkness…

Freya stopped herself short, with a shake of her head, pulling the memory of rubellite eyes and a bright smile to the forefront. Driving away the taunt of the girls darkness.

“My Lady?” A strong voice to match his towering form, her guard’s, concern clear, watching the goddess ruefully shake her head, displacing unwanted thoughts with dreams.

“Pay it no mind,” she smiled, for both their comforts, before glancing back at the soft darkness of the girl, as a light violet tone light reflected off the girl’s darkness. Brows furrowing upon noticing they were alone.

They’re not with her?

“Ottar, do you know the child with her?” The goddess asked with a loathing in her heart.

She did not wanting to peer at the girl any longer, but knew better than to let the girl roam or act, without her foreknowledge. Always sure to be aware of every one of the girls movements and associations, from her adoptive sisters to the employees at her shop, even the Crozzo boy, whom she annoyed for her entertainment. Even from a distance, the child was hers to manage. Not that she would accept the claim.

“Hmm,’ Ottar’s voice reverberated, as he scanned the crowd, Level Seven eyes working at eye ripping speeds, to spot his ladies query in record time. “Forgive me, my lady I don’t. Likely a second or third class. Perhaps she’s scouting for her mother.”

“It would seem,” the goddess began, before a bright light bounced off the girl, brighter and whiter than all that surround the girl.

He’s come!

With a single glance, the goddess took on the visage of a newlywed, whose love has just come home, jumping out of her seat, and striding towards the window forward. Her book long forgotten in her tirade of thoughts, clattered to the floor, unheard by the goddess, left to Ottar to pick up, as the goddess brought her hands to her lips, to stifle a laugh.

As if dipped face first into a sea of blood, the boy ran through the street, flinging blood with every drive of his arms, and the softest of breezes through his, now crimson, hair. Townsfolk took in the sight with shock, before joining Freya in her laughter.

He’s still pure, but oh so green. How I wish I could push him faster.

Dreamy eyes watched the boys back, as he sped down the northwestern main street, paying no mind to the drops of red left in his wake. A smile working its way back to her face, before her laughter reemerged, like an old friend.

She was far from satisfied but pleased, heart warmed, her patience rewarded. Even if it were only for few short minutes, sure that there would be more to come, and soon.

But first…

A girlish smile on her face, a youth on the brink of her first love, the goddess turned to Ottar, “I wish to know what he experienced. You’ll find out for me, won’t you?”

“I will do whatever pleases my lady,” he replied, receiving the brightest of smiles in return, before the goddess turned back to the window, reliving the afterglow of her love’s joy.

My Odr, what will you show me next?

Notes:

In an attempt to make the power system consistent, I have set the following rules for this AU

• The excelia boost, gained via rank up, will be 2000 excelia, with 400 going to each stat category. In this way, battles between adventurers with singular level disparities will depend more on stats earned than the level boost itself.

• Excelia gained at different levels hold equal value and is only gained when taking on difficult tasks. In addition, one's stats will generally be limited by their race. Ex. An elf building their strength stats from Lv 4 will never compare to doing so from Lv 1.

• Slotted spells can gain upgrades (like spell keys) overtime, which Gods can choose to apply or ignore

• Aging slows by an additional 0.8 years with each level, beginning from Level 2, but only after reaching physical maturity (21)
