Worldbuilding Notes for Spring & Summer

Summary:

An incomplete compilation of my background notes for Spring & Summer. It is not necessary to understand the main story.

Parts 1, 3, 5, 9 are notes on magical matters.
Part 2 is a birth order for characters who are near in age to each other.
Part 4 is a Targaryen family tree.
Part 6 answers the question: What is going on with House Stark? A certain group of gossips have thoughts.
Part 7 is about the state of the castles along the Wall. Part 10 has more info.
Part 8 is an incomplete breakdown of Blackfyre supporters.

I recommend waiting until chapter 9 to read part 1-3, chapter 13 for part 4, chapter 12 for part 5, and chapter 5 for part 6 & 7. 8 is best read post chapter 20.

Chapter 1: Seasonal Overview

Other Worldbuilding Notes about Spring
British wizards are primarily this season. Notable exceptions include James Potter (Summer), Sirius Black (Fall) and Albus Dumbledore (Winter).

In Westeros, they are usually the first or second most common group of people. In Essos, they are the second or third.

On Planetos, Valyrian dragonlords who bonded Spring dragons were noted for their powerful sorcery. The Spring dragons did not survive the Doom.

Of the flying horse breeds, Granian are this season.

Phoenixes are usually this season due to rebirth. When they are not, they are Summer.

The foresight of this season is the foresight of greenseers like Jojen Reed.

Summer
Passion and the growth of life

Summer empowers Fall and is empowered by Spring

  • Seasonal Vibes According to Summer
    • Spring - cozy, nice, tasty
    • Summer - normal and correct
    • Fall - slightly weird
    • Winter - very weird
  • Notable Summer Wand Woods
    • Aspen
    • Hazel
    • Laurel
    • Spruce
  • Incomplete List of Magical Summer Plants
    • Dittany
    • Dirigible Plum
    • Floo
    • Umbrella Flowers
  • Notable Summer Westerosi Houses
    • House Targaryen
    • House Velayron

Other Worldbuilding Notes about Summer
Valyrians are near exclusively this season due to the practice of incest.

The Targaryen dragons were Summer dragons, which means that Jon Snow who was Fall like most of House Stark, see my Fall notes for more information, was unknowingly drawing magical strength from Rhaegal while Dany was not drawing anything from Drogon.

In Westeros, they are beginning to become the largest group of people in the Crownlands but are the smallest group elsewhere on the continent. In Essos, they are usually the most common or second most common.

Of the flying horse breeds, Aethonan are this season.

When phoenixes are not Spring as is most common, they are instead this season.

The foresight of this season is known as dragon dreams, famously recurrent amongst the Targaryens.

Fall
Sacrifice and the preparation of the harvest

Fall empowers Winter and is empowered by Summer

  • Seasonal Vibes According to Fall
    • Spring - very weird
    • Summer - cozy, nice, tasty
    • Fall - normal and correct
    • Winter - slightly weird
  • Notable Fall Wand Woods
    • Cypress
    • Elm
    • Reed
    • Silver Lime
  • Incomplete List of Magical Fall Plants
    • Bubotuber
    • The Whomping Willow
    • Sopophorous Plant
  • Notable Westerosi Fall Houses
    • House Stark – Winter is Coming but it hasn’t arrived yet and they must prepare the harvest to survive it.
    • House Hightower

Other Worldbuilding Notes about Fall
Wildlings are near exclusively this season because the Others treat everything North of the Wall as their hunting grounds and refuse to allow Spring or Summer any foothold up there. Fall is usually the first or second most common group in Planetos. Again, the Others are primarily to blame for this.

Valyrian dragonlords who bonded to Fall dragons were noted for having strong powerful dragons. The majority of them did not survive the Doom. In the comments section of chapter nine for Spring & Summer, DreamsofDarkness suggested that Cannibal was a Fall dragon. I completely agree. Thank you, DreamsofDarkness!

Of the flying horse breeds, Abraxans are this season.

Thunderbirds are primarily this season. When they are not, they are Winter. Suggested by elfmaid and I am very grateful! Thank you!

The foresight of this season is practiced by the priesthood of R'hllor who peer into the flames for visions. Melisandre is particularly skilled. Tea reading is also a Fall type of foresight.

All of Fall was given a massive magical boost when Daenerys Stormborn hatched her three Summer dragons.

Winter
Death and the persistence of purpose

Winter empowers Spring and is empowered by Fall

  • Seasonal Vibes According to Winter
    • Spring - slightly weird
    • Summer - very weird
    • Fall - cozy, nice, tasty
    • Winter - normal and correct
  • Notable Winter Wand Woods
    • Elder
    • Fir
    • Rowan
    • Yew
  • Incomplete List of Magical Winter Plants
    • Gillyweed
    • Devil’s Snare
  • Notable Winter Westerosi Houses
    • None

Other Worldbuilding Notes about Winter
The Others are the only ones of Winter on Planetos since just before the Long Night, but this isn’t true on Earth. They would be very furious if any Winter people of Earth visited Westeros.

Of the flying horse breeds, Thestrals are this season.

While thunderbirds are mostly Fall, some thunderbirds are this season instead. As mentioned in the Fall notes, this was suggested by elfmaid and I am grateful.

Since British wizards are mostly Spring, they have a tendency to favor Winter-flavoured creatures and have bred crups to be this season. Suggested by elfmaid and I agree with this argument.

The foresight of this season is not known or named in Planetos, but on Earth the creator of pensieves possessed this foresight.

Notes:

May 7th, 2026: added information about foresight.
May 10th, 2026: added information on crups and thunderbirds as suggested by elfmaid. Thank you to elfmaid for these ideas.
