Chapter 1: frigophobia fear of the cold
The snow has always been cold for me. Even though I'm a robot, I've always been able to feel it. I have no clue why, but I just can. It's never bothered me before, but something seems painfully…off.“Bot, I think it's about a good enough time to go” Poppy said softly. I then gently closed my notebook, and slowly turned to look at the snowy forest ground from the cave we were in. It was quite beautiful, but I know the pain. I know what lurks there. How did it come to this? I couldn't help but think to myself. I mean I know how but why. Why us? What did we do, we are just kids after all. I remember it all now, I was running after Poppy and Metag. Then with a flash of light, almost like a whole planet hurdling to us. Then we ran, ran from the screams, from the sounds and booms, we just ran.
We walked in the snowy forest for a while, with the cold uncanny ground under us both. Not really in any real direction, just trying to find an abandoned WalMart or best buy to fix my broken eye, and get some more food and water or maybe find somebody else.“Bot, do you think you can pull up a map or?..” Poppy said quietly, turning to look at me. “Probably not, but I'll give it a try” I said while trying to pull up the internet, but still nothing. I'm guessing there was no wifi after all. “Unfortunately no, sorry.” I said to them, a bit disappointed in myself for not being able to do it, but it's whatever. We went back to walking and looking through the forest until we found a small town. You see, at first having one eye gone wasn't a problem, but now with monsters everywhere losing half of your sight is life or death. Plus it's already hard to see in the snowy wasteland, it would be nice to get more of my sight back.
We found a run down convenience store with broken windows and glass everywhere. Someone must have already been here, I think to myself. There was a run down broken up sign that said ‘40% off meat’. We walked in, Poppy going one way, me going the other. Oh hey, are those what I think they are. I picked up 2 pretty okay looking backpacks. I walk over to Poppy and show them the backpacks “I think they would be good to store stuff. You know, just to make it a bit easier on us.” I said, then they grabbed one of the backpacks and put some canned food and water in it. “This will do great thanks.” They said back with a warm smile, then we continued walking, leaving the store.
We had walked a few miles before hearing a sound. More like chirping, or maybe something you would hear from a really big frog. It was loud and angry, and maybe in pain? Poppy took me by the hand and hid us both behind a bush. I could feel it, smell it. It was like a walking corpse or rotting fruit. The smell was potent. There she was, taco. Her eye balls were ripped out of her sockets nowhere to be found, with a mix of dark black and blood red coming from where they once were. Dropping to the floor and vomiting black chunks with dark blood red spots. Her screams of agony and pain made me put a hand to my mouth. As more blood came out I could hear her, it was different when you actually knew that person. Sure, I didn't know her too well, but I did know her. She was someone, she did things, had friends, and a job. She was someone before all of this. I could see her skeleton become her skin as it popped out to create spider-like limbs. More cries of pain crooked out of her like a dying animal, and then just silent. Nothing happened, no noise, just nothing. Then I did something I hadn't done in a long time. I realized this wasn't some game, it wasn't a joke or a fair tell. It was real, it was with us, these were real people, with hopes and dreams and feelings. They used to love, they were just like us. Taco used her new limbs to run away into the snowy forest, I took a long breath I didn't know I was holding.
