The shadow stills, pausing in front of his hiding spot. Kai's heart stops, a scraped hand over his mouth, his tears hot and silent. He won every game of hide-and-seek, before.
That means nothing in the nightmarish land of monsters.
Now Mama is gone, and…
A baby bird, its mother's broken neck. Daddy wrapped them in paper and buried them.
A growl. His eyes squeeze shut.
Cloth rips away, light surges as teeth do, and—
"Hah!" A blade sings through air and blood gurgles, then drips.
Eyes blink open hesitantly, a demoness before him bearing a blade wet with black.
