Work Text:
Avery walked through the forest, stopping every couple steps to listen for movement, stop, walk, stop, walk. He thought about Derek and wondered if he was still alive, or at least still in control of his mind, even if Hastur was in his mind with him. Stop, walk, stop, movement! He dropped to his knees and started crawling towards a nearby bush.
“Don’t worry,” a voice told him from behind, "it's just me, Avery.” It was Derek, his armor was scratched and dirty, he looked like he had crawled out of his grave, which he probably had. He walked closer to Avery and crouched beside him, taking off his helmet. He had blonde hair that was tied into a short ponytail, his eyes were grey with a bit of brown around his pupils. He stood up, looking at Avery, “get up, we don’t have all day.”
Avery stared at him, his bright green falling in front of his dark green eyes. “y-you’re alive..” he muttered, pushing his hair out of his eyes. Avery stood up, looking Derek in the eyes. He started crying and ran towards Derek, giving him the biggest hug he could, yelling “YOU’RE ALIVE!” over and over again, until his crying turned to sobbing, happy sobbing. Avery couldn’t believe he was alive, after all that happened to? It was shocking.
Derek put his helmet back on and they started walking through the forest, not stopping to listen for any sounds of movement, it was peaceful, like Avery had always dreamed to be with Derek, and Derek felt the same way.
Reaching a pond, Derek sat down to rest while Avery jumped in, splashing the water at Derek.
“heheh.. stop!” Derek laughed, “I’m.. hehe.. serious!” Derek sat up and hopped in with Avery, splashing water back at him, it was war. He took off his helmet, filled it up with water and threw it at Avery.
Avery moved back as quickly as he could in the water, “HEY! THAT’S NOT FAIR!” He yelled at Derek, “STOP THAT!! I CAN’T THROW WATER AT YOU LIKE THAT!!” Avery got out of the pond, angry and soaking wet, laid down in the grass, and started rolling around to dry himself off.
Derek got out of the pond and walked over to Avery, "I win by default since you gave up.” he told Avery, staring at him before walking away. He started taking his armor off to let it dry properly.
Avery angrily stared at him and got up, “It’s a tie since neither of us technically won!” Avery declared, walking towards him, “you are a cheater though, i couldn’t fight back with as much water that u had!” he was still angrily staring at Derek, almost as if he couldn’t get him out of his head, which he couldn’t.
The idea that Derek was alive and here with Avery was shocking, unbelievable, he had to have died, right? Hastur, who was a literal god, fused himself with Derek’s mind. If this was Derek, Hastur had some control over him, or it was just Hastur himself pretending to be Derek, like he had pretended to be Avery.
“You finally realized.” Derek said, walking away from Avery, “he can’t be alive, fusing with his mind left us both dead.” Derek had suddenly become Hastur, his yellow cloak covering all of his body except for his face. His face was covered by half of a mask, the mask was bright yellow and the hole for the eye was pitch black, same with the other side of his face without a mask, except for a barely visible eye, staring down at Avery. He had a pitch black crown on, with little gold details on it.
Avery started to run away, but fell into a dark, dark hole, “FUCK!” he screamed, “I KNEW IT WAS TOO GOOD TO BE REAL!” Avery hit the bottom and everything went dark.
He woke up, in his bed, in his apartment, away from Hastur, but without Derek.
