a slip of the tongue

Summary:

Leon gets a call from Hagakure while he's at work, with Hagakure's emergency of the day. It ends a little differently this time.

Work Text:

Leon groans, fiddling past his apron to grab his phone out of his pants pocket to see who was calling. “It's my roommate. I've gotta take this.”

He answers the call, and presses his phone to his ear with an exasperated expression. He doesn't really excuse himself, just takes the call right next to his coworker Souda, who he'd just been talking to.

Knowing Hagakure, this phone call could be about anything. The dude called all the time. Leon just needed to know if the apartment was on fire, or if their landlord was being a dick. Then he could hang up, and go back to barely doing shit at work.

“What do you need?” Leon asks, waiting for an answer. He doesn't even try to sugarcoat it.

“You've gotta help me, man!” Hagakure exclaims into the phone with an exaggerated desperation. That's all it takes for Leon’s icy disposition to fade away.

Hagakure always did have a way of disarming him. He listens on, as Hiro pleads his case.

“I was getting hungry, so I threw some food in the microwave. But then I started hearing this weird whirring noise from the hallway. It almost sounded like an alien spaceship taking off. I had to check it out, y’know?” Hagakure sets the scene. Leon can hear him scratching his chin as he talks. “But it turned out to just be the lady across the hall's new vacuum cleaner. And then the door shut behind me, and I forgot my key inside, so now I'm sort of locked out.”

“My spare's taped under the rug.” Leon supplies, switching the phone from one ear to another, raising his shoulder to keep it there so that his palms are free to rest against the countertop. He likes hearing Hiro's voice, maybe.

Even if half of what came out of his mouth was nonsense.

“Aw man, you're a life saver!” Hagakure lays it on thick. Leon can practically see him with his palms pressed together in thanks. He was excessive, like that. “I gotta go--- my hot pocket's on the line! Love you, bye.”

“Yeah, whatever. Love you too.” It takes Leon hanging up, and seeing the look on Kazuichi's face to even realize what he said. Heatwaves of embarrassment flooded his face, but he shoved them down.

It was all Hagakure's fault, anyway.

There wasn't a mistake Leon made that wasn't caused by somebody else. This was no exception.

“Huh?” Kazuichi's eyebrow was raised to the heavens. He looked to Leon for an explanation. “Did you just-”

“Shut up,” Leon shoves Kazuichi's shoulder with the back of his palm. He wanted to shut down the teasing before it could start. “It's not like I meant to say that.”

Love you…

Yeah, right.

Notes:

Still, the thought lingers in Leon’s head. Maybe it's not so far from the truth after all.
